Marie Lockhart Matthews, 91
It is with great sadness and love we announce the passing of Marie Lockhart Matthews.
Marie was treasured and adored by family and friends. She was born September 24, 1922 in Kimberly, Idaho to Lawson and Grace Lockhart. She grew up in southern Idaho, where her passion for adventure brought her to achieving her flying license at 18. This developed an impressive skill flying planes that led to her amazing abilities with aerial acrobatics. Her deep adoration for flying created a remarkable talent to teach, in her words, "beautiful, young men" how to be successful navy fighter pilots for World War II. This passionate love affair with flying and teaching also developed into her starting a successful flight school in Kellogg where she met and fell in love with her husband, Johnny. Her love for flying was expressed in many amazing stories that her family adored hearing.
Her other passion for fun came from snow skiing, a joyful pastime that she passed on to her children and grandchildren. Her love for snow started in the 1940s at Lookout Pass, and then continued throughout her life at ski areas around the world like Pomerelle, White Pass, Sun Valley and resorts throughout Europe. A true lover of the outdoors, her favorite place on the planet was Beauty Bay on Lake Coeur d'Alene where she, with her beloved Johnny and family, enjoyed decades of swimming, water skiing, eating and glamping (glamorous camping).
Her adult life was spent living in Burley, ID, Othello, WA and later Coeur d'Alene. Throughout her life she dedicated herself to her family, giving them support, love and guidance to live joyful lives. Marie was an amazing woman that treasured her family, loving them all unconditionally and without judgment. On December 24, at 10:50 p.m., she passed peacefully, leaving us on the earthly plane to once again be with her beloved in heaven. She will be missed greatly.
She is survived by her daughter Geraldene (Jeri ) Matthews and son John Matthews (wife Stacie Matthews); grandchildren Michael Morscheck, Brad Morscheck (wife Leslie), Shanie Matthews, Melea Matthews and Lindsay Matthews, as well as great grandchildren Devon Morscheck, Jasper Morscheck and the entire Lockhart family.
Memorial Services will be held 2 p.m., December 28, 2013 at Yates Funeral Home Hayden Chapel and Gathering Center. Please visit Marie’s memorial and sign her online guest book at www.yatesfuneralhomes,com
