BUS: Don't put kids in jeopardy

| December 11, 2013 8:00 PM

By sharing this information, not only do I wish it to protect my grandson, I wish to protect every child and young person riding the School District 271 buses. I only write this as the “Bus Barn” personnel did not take the complaint from my daughter seriously, merely being told, “It just doesn’t sound like the bus driver.”

Friday, Dec. 6, on a day our roads were extra hazardous with snow and ice, a bus driver became agitated at my grandson demanding that he ride to LCHS sideways, with his back against the inside wall of the bus. He was uncomfortably cold against freezing metal with the day not even 12 degrees; yet my concern is the position that the bus driver placed him in. In an accident with a bus broadsided, an unnecessary serious injury or death could have occurred. It is enough that school buses do not have seatbelts, yet this situation was completely unnecessary.

I myself work with the senior population of our community, and at times, my position of Director requires me to transport those wonderful people on our shuttle in the community. Under no circumstances would I ever intentionally breach the safety of those passengers. I am sorry, yet there is no reason or excuse this should ever happen.

Parents, please always listen to your children to ensure that you do what you can to keep them safe. I also request that the School District take this information seriously. Please keep our children safe!
