STORY: Labels can be hurtful

| December 25, 2013 8:00 PM

I was shocked after reading the Dec. 19 Christmas For All campaign story. The article “Family’s life is incredibly chaotic” is way off base for me. It left me sick to my stomach. How dare the person state ADHD and dyslexia are “mental disorders.” Really? On what basis is this information taken from? Have you considered the fact that YOUR paper goes to our children’s schools, and this is now seen by all?

How do you think your child would feel reading this if he/she is dealing with ADHD or dyslexia on a daily basis? Well, now you have put people who are very successful in life who have ADHD and or dyslexia as having a mental disorder. How dare you! I myself have several family members with ADHD and they are far from mental. I am a mother of a 14-year-old son who somehow slipped through elementary school years and was diagnosed at age 12 with ADHD and dyslexia, and he is far from being mental.

The paper really needs to justify its classifications of mental disorders before they print an article such as this in the CFA section of our paper. I’m sure many other people have found this offensive.

Autism, on the other hand, does fall under that category, but honestly? Maybe have someone proofread this information.
