Here's a budget question for Coeur d'Alene officials: How much is the public's confidence worth?
2013 outlook is good
As we zero in on a new year, we reflect on 2012 as the year the real estate market turned a corner. At this year's end we see another downward adjustment in mortgage interest rates to which most react with a ho-hum attitude. We have enjoyed rates that are so low that a minor change in either direction does little to stimulate a more pronounced reaction. Mortgage buyer Freddie Mac shows the average rate on a 30-year loan declined to 3.35 percent from 3.37 percent last week. That's not far from the 3.31 percent rate of about a month ago, the lowest on records dating to 1971.

GUNS: Questions that need answers
Isn’t it curious how the Obama Administration, in office during the gun-walking operation known as “Fast and Furious” that facilitated the illegal smuggling of several thousand assault weapons into the hands of violent drug cartels in Mexico — weapons that have been implicated in the murders of possibly hundreds of Mexican nationals and a U.S. border agent, suddenly after several recent high profile shooting massacres now feels empowered to impose new restrictions on the millions of law-abiding American gun owners who had nothing at all to do with any of these things?

The St. Joe Ranger District Recreation Program is seeking public input on two Idaho Parks and Recreation Grant applications being submitted this winter. The first proposal being submitted is to the Off Road Motor Vehicle Fund. This grant will help to allow access to new Off Highway Vehicle (OHV) routes designated by the incoming Travel Management Plan. The funds will be used to open 3 seasonal OHV routes on the St. Joe Ranger District. These routes will be in the Slate Creek-Dunn Peak, Kelley Creek, and Emida areas of the district and will allow seasonal OHV access on roads that are not currently open to OHVs. The second proposal is to the Recreational Vehicle Program. This grant will help to improve campgrounds utilized by RV campers on the St. Joe Ranger District. With degrading facilities, we are in need of funding to provide new picnic table planks and fire rings for our RV accessible campgrounds. These funds will help improve the experience of not only RVers, but all visitors to the campgrounds of the St. Joe Ranger District. COLUMN: Hit center of target
Almost every Christmas season the letter “Yes Virginia, There is a Santa Claus” is printed in newspapers around the country. It is a nice addition to Christmas lore. I suggest the column My Turn “Gun-crazy Society Must Change” by Kathleen Peterson in the Coeur d’Alene Press on Dec. 21 be printed not yearly but at least weekly until real and effective gun control legislation is passed in this country. My father was a 65-year Idahoan and an avid hunter almost all of his life. He was an NRA member for many years. He is certainly turning over in his grave about the NRA policies and the fact that our national legislators are hog-tied by the NRA. I am sure he has long ago torn up his NRA membership card. He died in 1991 at age 85 and I write this letter for him.

Culture versus technology
It was the winter of 1937-38 and I was attending a small high school in Hailey, Idaho. The student body was very small, and there was seldom any activity from outside our small realm that influenced us in any way, but one day this changed and the topic of the day has stayed with me all these years.

Declutter and destress your life with biofeedback
Life happens and the emotions triggered from life experiences often stay with us. We hold onto these emotions in places such as our spine, organs, muscles, and the energy fields that surround our bodies. We also hold onto emotions in our genes, passed down from our ancestors.
Just breathe!
Everything moves so fast. You have every gadget to make your life less stressful from iPhones to smart phones to automatic deposits and "apps" for groceries and your caloric intake. We want anything that will make our life easier. But what if that is not what your brain needs? What if all you need is what you already have but you just don't know how to use it? What if just the simple act of breathing is all you need to decrease your stress and teach your brain how to unwind from the constant chatter it experiences all day long? According to a study in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences all your brain needs is 3 minutes of "mindful breathing" at a time and your brain and body chemistry will change. Suddenly the body will release the" feeling good" hormones of serotonin and dopamine just with the act of "mindful breathing."

Navigating New Year parties with diabetes
If you have diabetes, drinking alcohol can be especially dangerous. The action of insulin and diabetes medications is to lower blood glucose. Since alcohol is metabolized by the liver, when you drink, your liver has to work to remove the alcohol from your blood instead of helping the pancreas to regulate your blood sugar. This distraction can lower blood sugar shortly after drinking and lasting up to 24 hours, leading to very dangerous hypoglycemia. If you have diabetes and choose to drink alcohol, check your blood glucose before you drink, while you drink and after. Most importantly, check your blood glucose before you go to bed to make sure it is at a safe level - between 100 and 140 mg/dL. Blood sugar often dips in the night and if you have been drinking it can really plummet. This is the most dangerous time because you are asleep and can't recognize the symptoms.

GUNS: Are they the real solution?
After reading the letter from Michael Alexander, I would like to respond to his contention that guns are the answer. It would depend on the situation. Certainly if law enforcement personnel were in the area, they are trained to use their weapons in a responsible manner so we can assume their guns might be the answer.

Stories of a recent embezzlement case within the City of Coeur d’Alene of taxpayer funds isn’t the first time this has happened. Public funds should be handled under a “checks and balance” system which apparently isn’t set up here in Coeur d’Alene. If you wish to comment on the proposed applications please contact Jonathan Steinat 245-6013 or write to the St. Joe Ranger District, 222 S. 7th Street, Suite One, St. Maries, 83861. HUNTER: About to become hunted
Folks, let me describe to you a situation that has been going on in the Hayden area for the last few years. Specifically in Avondale on Friar Drive and the neighboring streets of Saxon and Tudor. Some low life has been shooting buck deer, leaving the bodies to rot, taking only the heads and horns. This no-class citizen has been using bow and arrow in a residential area. It is our belief that he is scouting the deer during daylight, then returning after dark to kill these animals. One should not refer to this as hunting by any stretch of imagination, as you can practically walk up and pet these creatures.
SANTA: Seeing him is believing
It was 9 p.m. last Friday night. I was reading some Christmas stories in a magazine. The sound of a siren and honking vehicles from the street drew my attention. I went to the window to see what was the matter. A long Post Falls fire engine with lots of bright colored lights was moving slowly along the street. It was attracting attention to a second vehicle with colored lights that carried Santa Claus. They stopped for a moment in front of our house. Santa Claus noticed me looking out of our window. He waved at me. I waved back. Then they moved slowly along the street. It made my day.
WEAPONS: No place for assault
Sorry gun people, but help us stop this madness, please! Should we ban assault weapons, REALLY? YOU THINK?
SIGN: Thoughtless reference to guns
I know that I live in the land of the mighty hunter, but in the wake of the shootings in Connecticut, shouldn’t someone have had the sense or at least the decency to pull the kid with the sandwich sign, “Gun Show Today at the Fairgrounds!” off the corner on Saturday?
CITY: Lest we forget

SIN: The root of man's problems
Larry Barnes is correct when he states that misconceptions and half-truths occur whenever articles are written about Mormons. But the same can be said about Christians or others. No one, however, is more prone to presenting misconceptions and half-truths than Christians and Mormons themselves. What we are supposed to bear in mind when we read this poem is that God created man, or mankind, in His image, or that God is a man. In Jesus Christ, God did indeed become a man that He might reconcile mankind to Himself by delivering him from the penalty and power of sin.
SHOOTERS: We need good laws
Bravo Gary for your letter in Sunday’s Press re: Shooters: Turn the tables on them. I would like to add that laws have to be changed so that they don’t allow the criminal to determine the “rules of engagement.”
TRIBUTE: To Rev. Carl Blanford
Carl was a very brilliant student who graduated at the top of his class at Post Falls in 1939. No one had much money in those days and his family was no exception. During high school he worked setting type, etc., at the “Post Falls Tribune,” thus learning a skill which would help him get a college education. Mr. H.S. Wetherell was either the owner or editor who employed him.

Retreatment
With proper care, most teeth that have had endodontic (root canal) treatment can last as long as other natural teeth. Root canals performed by endodontists (root canal specialists) have a 95% success rate. In some cases, however, a tooth that has received endodontic treatment fails to heal. Occasionally, the tooth becomes painful or diseased months or even years after successful treatment. ??
Endo Microscope
The use of the Endo Microscope allows a doctor to perform procedures with greater accuracy because the treatment area is magnified. The microscope's superior illumination and magnification has made the greatest impact on visualization of the area, evaluation of surgical technique and use of fewer x-rays. With the unique ultrasonic unit and tips, a separated instrument or silver point can be removed with less effort. Fourth canals are now routinely being located and completely debrided in virtually all molars, thus increasing the long-term success rate with root canal therapy.
Apicoectomy (Endodontic Surgery)
An apicoectomy is performed after an unsuccessful root canal. When an infection will not go away or returns after a root canal has been performed this procedure is usually necessary. There are many nerves that may contain the infected tissue, so it is difficult to ensure that all of the infection is removed during a root canal. During an apicoectomy, the tip of the root of the tooth is removed and replaced with a filling. ??

PREP GIRLS BASKETBALL: CCS stays unbeaten
Checking in with your kids...might prevent a tragedy
In the wake of the tragedy that took place last week in Connecticut, a nation is left wondering, "Why?" Why would someone do such a thing? Why didn't someone...anyone, step in at some point, with a "Hey, how are you doing kid?" to check in with this obviously, very ill young man? We are left looking for answers as to how such a horrific event could have happened and how might we be able to prevent similar events in the future. Ever since the "shoe bomber" was caught, every airline passenger must remove their shoes to prove they don't have a weapon of some sort like he did. The bomber wasn't even successful, yet we still have to remove our shoes. How many school shootings is it going to take for some serious prevention efforts to be put in place?
Cancer linked to obstructive sleep apnea
Obstructive sleep apnea, a common disorder that causes snoring, fatigue, daytime tiredness and dangerous pauses in breathing at night, has been linked to cancer. About 28 million Americans have moderate to severe obstructive sleep apnea; and about 90 percent of these people are not even aware that they have it.
CLIFF: We need the Tea Party

Red in the face - Rosacea
Doctor of Oriental Medicine
Reddening of the face, that is not simply blushing or hot flashes, is many times Rosacea. Rosacea is a chronic inflammatory skin condition of the face. It can look like small red, pus-filled pustules, or bumps, and/or with tiny vessels becoming dilated and obvious at the surface of the skin, especially the face (referred to as telangiectasia). Although medicine does not seem to clearly define the causes, there are many known contributors.

Family, family, family!
Oh deck the halls, and send in Santa and be sure to not forget all the family, with all the craziness that family brings. The holidays are a great time for us to remember how special family is and what the gift of Jesus has done for all of us. But it is also a time when family emotions are at an all-time high. Families seem to be able to bring out the best in each other and the worst, all at the same time.
Even nice kids get lice
When children get head lice, parents should remember that the presence of these tiny parasitic insects has nothing to do with dirt. Instead, lice infestations are related to the type of close contact that children are exposed to at school. In addition, children pose rather easy targets for lice because the little creatures are better able to cling to fine hair of thin diameter. Moreover, children often share combs, brushes, hats and other objects that spread lice. The first telltale sign of lice is usually itching behind the ears, on the scalp and at the nape of the neck. Treatment largely consists of an over-the-counter medicated shampoo or rinse containing permethrin or the recently FDA-approved comb-free shampoo ivermectin.

MORMON: Doesn't embrace the Trinity
While one could wish that the tone of Mr. Patterson’s article were more winsome, the fact that he has been honest about the content of Mormon teaching is refreshing. Frequently Mormons soft-pedal these differences between Mormonism and historic Christianity — particularly in the “missionary lessons” offered by their mobile missionary force. But Mr. Patterson has come out and told us the truth. Thank you. So for all those inquiring souls investigating the claims of Mormons to represent the only true church on Earth, let us take note of what we’ve learned.

Your perfect Christmas wine
Like we always say the wine you choose for your holiday gatherings is very personal like all things wine related. What you and your family like, what you will be serving, whether it is a full blown dinner or just a party where wine will be served as an aperitif all influence your tastes and decisions. There are some standard main courses and appetizers though where classic pairings make the choices easier. Here are some of our favorites that we serve at this festive time of year.
Spirit of the season abounds
We attended church on Sunday morning at Walmart. There was no sacrament or communion offered. No sermons or songs. But there was an abundance of joy, hope, the spirit of giving and silent prayers for children whose reality is so far removed from joy and hope and the basic comforts most of us rarely think about.

How to make U.S. greater
What comes to mind when you hear "America?" You think of the land of opportunity, a nation that was ahead of its time when it gave its citizens the right to decide their own government, a place where a hardworking person is able to improve his life, a place where the population is well off. The country represented a new hope to the oppressed, the poor, the needy. It was even said to have streets paved with gold by those who saw it as an opportunity for a new life. It has become the leading nation of the world; America has come to symbolize liberty, equality and prosperity.

This comment rather was in regard to the fiscal cliff debate.

Head colds seem to be the bane of our existence. With a real cure continuing to elude us, we continue to try all variety of medications that will relieve head-cold symptoms and shorten the illness' duration. In this latter category of over-the-counter medications, it has been suggested that zinc lozenges or syrup would be effective. To find out, researchers recently analyzed data of 17 trials involving more than 2,000 individuals. They found that those taking zinc were able to reduce the duration of their colds by about a day and a half (compared with those taking placebos). Moreover, larger doses of zinc were found to work even better, especially among adults (compared with children).

The wine of our past
For all of us there was a very clearly remembered start to our interest and appreciation of wine, that seminal moment when we first tasted it and started down the evolutionary path for our knowledge and our palates. We all joke frequently about some of those wines that started the process, the sweet and cloying wines in the box, jug or bottle rapped in straw - we all know the names! But there were other wines too that we first tasted with friends and family that have lineage to what we currently drink and old world wines that winemakers here in the states were attempting to emulate but also adapt for the American palate, which decades ago was in its infancy.

Yoga for you
There are many different forms of Yoga. The word Yoga means "to unite" or "to join," some say that it can mean "connection" or "contact." The most frequently talked about form of Yoga in western cultures is called Hatha Yoga. It concentrates on the health and purity of the body. Yoga originally was one of the six orthodox schools of Hindu philosophy, however through the years many other religious groups included this tradition in their belief systems. Hatha Yoga has the Yoga Sutras with posture and then breathing component mixed together. James Raub calls it a "psychophysical Yoga." You can see then that Yoga can attain this mind body connection through a disciplined method toward a specific goal. In many religious traditions, Yoga was used to connect into a spirit-filled life force. Today the goal of Yoga is often to alleviate health problems, decrease stress and create a form of exercise that restores us.

Now is the time to lead, Mr. President
Americans' anxiety over the ability of representatives in Washington to prevent the nation from falling off the fiscal cliff is yet another reminder of the failure of leadership in the nation's capital. Fears of rising taxes, indiscriminate, across-the-board spending cuts, a second recession and general fiscal calamity echo across our land. It's possible that Congress will depart Washington for the holidays without achieving a workable, common-sense solution to the financial problems that have engulfed our country. Is there a way to protect the citizenry from such irresponsibility?

TAXES: A little paper justified
I just read the article in The Press on putting more information on tax bills. This year my tax went up 78 percent compared to last year. I compared this year’s bill and last year’s. Still confused on how this happened I called the Kootenai County Treasurer to find out why.

Leaders in education assembled Thursday, Nov. 29, to begin finding solutions for immediate and long-term issues facing the future of K-12 education in Idaho. The ideas generated by this group were given to Gov. Butch Otter’s office and offered to legislative leaders. The group will request a public hearing with the House Education Committee, the Senate Education Committee and possibly the Joint Finance and Appropriations Committee to share its ideas and offer its continued help.
Build a state-based insurance exchange
Idaho rarely looks to the federal government for the right answers. Governor Butch Otter now has the opportunity to keep a federal bureaucracy at bay, by creating our own Idaho solution to a critical issue: health insurance exchanges.

Is sleeping too much making you fat - or just the opposite?
New evidence came out last month linking lack of sleep with an increased risk of obesity. Research in the American Journal of Human Biology and the American Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics Journal, show that not getting enough shut-eye could affect glucose metabolism and even raise blood pressure. It may also affect how our appetites are regulated by causing increased energy consumption.
SOCIALISM: You can see it now
My guess, and it’s only a guess, is that the generation that lived through the roaring ‘20s, depressing ‘30s and the warring ‘40s didn’t teach my generation the mistakes learned from those times. They wanted to protect us, probably so as not to traumatize us. I don’t think they wanted us to live the fear that they lived.
TOWED: Some good emerges
I would like to state that I never questioned Coeur d’Alene Athletic Club’s right to tow people the night of the parade and fireworks, only the decency of it. What IS decent is the several offers I’ve had to park in people’s driveways and downtown parking lots next year.

TOWED: The other side of the story
I begrudgingly submit this response to Jill Buckland, however blatant lies that smear a business surely warrant a rebuttal. The importance of supervision in mental health care
Everybody needs a sounding board. Even if it's just a quick, "Hey, this thing came up today and I was hoping to get some feedback," or, "I'm really struggling with this case and I need to make sure I'm not missing anything," we all need input from others from time to time.
Helpful dental insurance tips
For most people the holiday season is a great time of year to celebrate traditions and enjoy the company of friends and family. Unfortunately, it can also be a time of financial hardship for many. Put these two things together and it is understandable why your dental care is one of the furthest things from your mind right now. Frankly, there are other more pleasant things to do and to think about. We get that. But there are also some important things you should understand if you, like most people, rely on your dental insurance to help cover the cost of maintaining your pearly whites.
Immunity now!
I bet everyone has taken a moment to think about their immune system in the last few months, or at least crossed their fingers in hopes they could make it through another flu season unscathed. Many people do not realize that they have a lot of control over their health and can assist their immune system in staying strong and healthy.

Frank Henderson will be sworn into his fifth term in office in the Idaho House of Representatives in Boise tomorrow. It also happens to be his 90th birthday which will make Frank by far the most senior member of the Idaho Legislature, not only for this upcoming session but in the history of the Idaho Legislature. 'Moving the needle'
Since we first opened the shop nearly five years ago, we have hosted many wine tastings and winemaker dinners with our restaurant partners and winemakers from all over the wine producing regions of the United States and with some great importers of old world wines. We have found that some of these events virtually fill themselves while others take a bit more coaxing of the wine consuming public. So we naturally thought, "Why do some wines and wineries "move the needle" of interest from the consuming public while others "not so much?"
MORMONS: Here's another viewpoint
I read the three-page article in The Press Sunday morning about Mormons and felt duty bound to write a response. Having grown up in Idaho Falls, a predominantly Mormon community, I couldn’t help but learn a lot about their beliefs, even to the point of taking Mormon seminary in high school.
SENTENCE: Not a strong deterrent
Judge Penny Friedlander, shame on you. One hundred eighty days in jail with 120 days suspended, a $4,000 fine with $3,000 suspended. Do you really think the sentence you gave Michael Dobler will prevent other people from harming defenseless animals? I don’t think so.

Dental nutrition
When we think of dental health, we think of the advice of current dentists: "brush and floss after every meal," "use fluoride" and "see your dentist regularly." Yet hundreds of years ago these things didn't exist, yet dental health appeared to be quite superior to what it is today. That is not to say we don't need dentists and the other paraphernalia, we do, but it is because of our nutrition that we need them today.

Migraine prevention
Medications that prevent migraines from recurring are only used by a small number of the roughly 15 percent of the adult population affected by the painful headaches. According to the American Academy of Neurology (AAN) and the American Headache Society (AHS), nearly 40 percent of migraine sufferers could benefit from preventive drugs, but less than a third of these individuals take them. New guidelines put forth by the AAN and AHS list several drugs that help stop migraines before they start. These include the anti-seizure drugs divalproex (Depakote), valproate (Depacon) and topiramate (Topamax), in addition to the beta-blockers metoprolol, propranolol and timolol. While all of these drugs have side effects, their benefit must be weighed against any potential downside.
Yoga
Yoga is a unique form of physical exercise that incorporates the mind body connection into its practice. It is a way to engage the mind in the body's work and vice versa. Many people feel that they do their physical exercise everyday already so why should they need to add Yoga into their routine a couple of days a week.

Market continues to encourage
When we started this column in 2008 it was predicated by the need for accurate local information. The real estate market had begun falling in many parts of the country in 2007 and the resounding crash was evident in newspapers worldwide. Of course we are not the rest of the world and it would be many months before our local market began its decline. At the end of 2007 our Multiple Listing Service reported the average price of all residential listings was still 4 percent ahead of the previous year. Ten months later, we found our market had shifted. By the end of 2008 our average sales price had declined by 5 percent. Although our declines were not as rapid or severe as in other areas, we had to admit that we were headed for tougher times.

CLIFF: It's a long way down
Watching the news over the weekend, retailers are very happy with the money spent over this time period, I guess some records were broken. I guess most of these people that were trying to be the first in the store, pushing and shoving people didn’t see the news before telling people about the fiscal cliff, taxes going up and unemployment going up after the first of the year. Even before the election, large companies were reporting how many people they were going to let go after the first of the year. It amounted to thousands. I’m sure small companies will also be laying off.

Big Government on runaway path
After World War II the U.S. Government wanted to protect our country from further attacks. One finding, learned from the Japanese, was an armed citizenry is the best deterrent . The Japanese stated the one big reason they did not attack the continental U.S. is because every corn field, wheat field, every forest and building or home would hide gun bearing citizens and since they could not fight a never ceasing army of armed citizens their decision was to attack Hawaii instead. We are a gun bearing people. the world knows it and if our rights to bear arms is rescinded, powerful enemies will have opportunity to take over the country. The founding fathers had determined the only way to protect the populace against others who would harm us and even our own government, is to empower the people. The United Nations has some thoughts about us in that respect; hence the International Arms Treaty has been signed by our own Secretary of Defense Hillary Clinton. This treaty will be signed by our Congress at some point, and will require every gun owner in the United States to register their weapons. The government will then know where the guns of our citizens are and can confiscate them at any time. So many regulatory acts, signed into law by the president (illegally, of course bypassing Congress) that if he sends his militia to your home before they get done inspecting your property they will have found several points where you are breaking the law and if you are a threat or use your free speech against them they could arrest you and put you in jail. That is why the President wanted to do away with the Writ of Habeas Corpus which protects us from Government strong arming their citizens.
