MORMONS: Here's another viewpoint

| December 5, 2012 8:00 PM

I read the three-page article in The Press Sunday morning about Mormons and felt duty bound to write a response. Having grown up in Idaho Falls, a predominantly Mormon community, I couldn’t help but learn a lot about their beliefs, even to the point of taking Mormon seminary in high school.

The church believes such a stark contrast to what I learned from reading the Bible that I was curious to know why. After much reading and studying, I discovered some major differences between Mormonism and Christianity.

The Bible teaches that there is only one God. Mormons teach in their Doctrine and Covenants that people who are faithful will someday also be gods of their own world. The Bible warns us to stay away from false prophets and not to accept another gospel.

Mormonism started from one man named Joseph Smith who says he found some golden plates written in an undecipherable language and that only he could translate them with the use of some special glasses. I’ll rest on one final point. The Bible hasn’t changed its doctrine in thousands of years and proves itself to be true as more and more discoveries are made. The Book of Mormon has undergone numerous changes over the years, some of them on major doctrines taught in the early church.

Though everything I have written will surely be disputed or justified by Mormons, I challenge each and every one of you to do your own research and you will see that I am not wrong. Most Mormons are good people and your article does a thorough job of highlighting some good things Mormons have done, but let us not forget, it is through grace we have been saved by faith, not by works so that no one can boast.
