WARMING: Chilled by 'Chasing Ice'

| December 26, 2012 8:00 PM

Many of us don’t believe something until we see it for ourselves. Reading about this summer’s wildfires, droughts and heat waves, even Superstorm Sandy, doesn’t convince us about global warming. That “stuff” is too far away. Unbelievable. Or part of “the liberal agenda.”

The movie “Chasing Ice,” however, cuts through all of that. How? By showing, in stunning time-lapse photography, the rapid melting of Arctic glaciers. You watch as crystal blue glaciers crumble into huge chunks down into the frigid sea. You see glaciers melt more in the last 10 years than they had in the previous 100. There are more than one “Oh my God” moments in this movie.

“Chasing Ice” is a human story too. National Geographic photographer James Balog and his crew risk their lives to capture unbelievable shots inside 100 foot high ravines of ice to show torrents of melt water rushing to the sea.

Go see “Chasing Ice” for its beauty, its adventure and its message. Bring your skepticism and denial. And be prepared to have nature cut through it like heat melts through ice.

The film plays through Dec. 27th at the Magic Lantern Theatre in Spokane, 25 W. Main Ave. Check your listings for days and times.
