BUSES: Driving a hard bargain

| December 19, 2012 8:00 PM

This is in reference to the contract busing that Cd’A School District has been looking at. I am curious why there hasn’t been more coverage on it.

I have driven school bus for 34 years. The first part at Wallace, and the second part at Cd’A. I was married to the transportation supervisor in Wallace for a long time, so I know a lot of things that go on “behind” the scenes.

I think it will be a grave mistake if District 271 falls for the contract busing. It looks good but, in the long run, it won’t be. They do it, they will never be able to afford to buy the buses back.

If they ever want to pass another levy they may want to think about this. The drivers and staff in No. 271 care for their passengers, know them, where they live etc., go the extra mile for their kids.

The parents KNOW this, and nine times out of 10, a parent will vote YES on a LEVY (that otherwise would vote NO on) BECAUSE of the extra care their child has been given — even though it wasn’t required.

They put this through and the drivers are going to be campaigning against a levy.

You are not going to find a more caring group of people than what are already established in the Transportation Department of Cd’A School District than is there now. Keep it as is.
