It's all about the wine
As the transition to synthetic closures on wine bottles whether they be the twist cap Stelvin, or any number of synthetic and even glass "corks" continues for many the debate still rages over the implications of a bottle sealed with something other than real cork. We have long felt that the lack of a cork closure does steal some of the ambience of opening a wine bottle but as this evolution continues what we have really found is it all comes down to what is in the bottle not what seals it.

According to recent studies, Americans' receive most of their disease fighting antioxidants from a somewhat surprising source: coffee. With the seemingly endless lines at local coffee stands, it is a wonder that any of us ever get sick! Due to our close proximity to Seattle, and the birthplace of Starbucks, we take our espresso very seriously here in North Idaho. However, if we aren't careful, coffee drinks can easily wreak some serious havoc on our waist lines.
Rehabilitation for the injured worker
Worker Rehabilitation is a specialized field of rehabilitation that focuses on treating patients with work-related injuries. Rehabilitation professionals have treated injured workers for decades. In recent years, however, there has been an increase in the involvement and focus of the clinical management of injured workers. Rehabilitation professionals are now, closely involved with the clinical management of the injured worker from the acute stage in the rehabilitation process through return to work. This involvement in specialized return to work programs and the determination of the readiness of return to work has created a niche to effectively and safely assist in the return of an injured worker to gainful employment.

Last spring during the heated Recall, I attended a lecture at the Coeur d’Alene library by a constitutional lawyer for which Mike Patrick was the emcee. Fed action not panacea for real estate
While it is true that the announcement of the Fed's intent to buy $40 billion of Mortgage Backed Securities was received well by Wall Street and interest rates pierced previous historic lows, consumers may not see much impact beyond this point. The question could have been a yes/no question like “Do you support giving up your right to vote for some positions in county government so the commissioners can appoint a Czar to run the county?”

SCHOOL: Senior photo policy poor
I’m a senior at Lake City High School, and was very excited to get my senior pictures done. This last summer the district decided to make a rule that senior pictures must be: only from the waist up, no vertical shots, no full-figure shots, head shots can only be 1 1/4 inch from the bottom of the chin to the top of the head, must only be the senior (no props, animals or other people), and no soft focus.

George Roger LeGore, 70
George Roger LeGore, age 70, passed away peacefully in Phoenix, Ariz., on Sunday, Sept. 16, 2012, surrounded by his loving family. He was born on June 16, 1942, to George W. LeGore and Phyllis LeGore (Holland) in Coeur d'Alene, where he graduated from high school and married Leila Parker. He pursued and lived out his dreams with his long career as a radio announcer. On the radio airwaves, he was known as Charlie Dee broadcasting on stations ranging from news to an array of music formats throughout the Inland Empire, although his passion was always rock ‘n’ roll. His hobbies included being an avid collector of radio memorabilia, vinyl albums and records, and amassing an impressive collection of old-time radio shows. He was a loving husband and father who had a love for all animals and could usually be seen with a cherished pet in tow. George and his wife eventually moved from the area to retire in Phoenix.

VOTE: You'll elect a Caesar
The presidential Election Day is almost here. Looking at both candidates, I was having a hard judgment call. With Mitt Romney, I disagree with a lot of his issues and the fact that he is of the Mormon religion; of which he has a right to choose. Looking to President Obama, I am not sure if he has a religion. In our great country it is his right to not have one. I strongly oppose many of his issues, especially his vast spending of our tax dollars.

You can call me a lot of things but I’d like to be known as the “Digital Patriot.” As I look around this vibrant city, I see quite a lot of problems. The main problem is the Bureaucracy can’t communicate. Every bureau has its own system and they don’t seem to talk to each other very well. Of course, this is from a citizen’s perspective. If the left hand can’t talk to the right, how in the hell are we going to play a game of ball.

Times to beat
There is no way to get around it. The cardiovascular component of exercise is what we need to do everyday, 30 minutes a day, no matter what. It is the aerobic part of our program. It takes time to do it, because you need to keep your heart rate above a certain level for the entire 30 minutes. Many of my patients say to me that they walk back and forth to their car everyday from work, or they walk the kids to school or take the stairs instead of the elevator and think this is enough cardiovascular exercise. These are all good things, but they are not enough. They are not an aerobic exercise that benefits your heart and lungs as we need to everyday. They burn some calories, but they do not have the time frame and rate of exertion at a consistent level that is necessary.

What's not to love about a birthday
We've been hearing about the 100th birthday of the Coeur d'Alene Chamber of Commerce for a year in an inspired celebration of all of those with vision and generous hearts in this community. The big party is just two days away on Friday, in keeping with the historical accuracy of the organization's founding. Thanks to Robert Singletary via Kiki Miller, here's the nutshell of how the chamber came to exist and why this Friday's water revue and exhibition is so fitting to kick off the party on the front lawn of The Coeur d'Alene Resort.

RADICALS: An eye for an eye
It’s time we did just as our adversaries are doing: Storm their embassies and burn them down. The president says that the majority of Libya are friends of America. Well when the majority sends the radicals running and publicly hangs the ones who killed our people we should think about giving them aid. NOT UNTIL!

Beware, voters, beware! Republican mouthbreathers are prowling the Opinion pages in force. Last Sunday’s Press contained no fewer than four letters attempting to perpetuate Republican lies about President Obama that have been disproved time after time by fact-checkers of all political persuasions. But even some of their leaders have admitted that they won’t let facts stand in their way. They continue to promote these baseless lies for one purpose – to try to portray President Obama as “different” from us, as un-American. If they thought they could get away with it, they would remind you that he is not white. The truth is that our President is a black American Christian.

Cow's milk substitutes: Truly healthy or just plain trendy?
While cow's milk has been a staple of the American diet since at least the invention of the chocolate chip cookie, there are now many alternatives to milk, most of which are made from plant based sources such as soy beans, almonds, rice and coconuts. For those who are intolerant or allergic to dairy, or avoiding it for philosophical reasons, these milk substitutes create great alternatives to cow's milk, but with so many options, it's easy to get confused on which one to choose. It's not broken, but let's fix it anyway
Perhaps the most insidious and diabolical changes ever made to governments in history began with the dubious or even patently false claim that something is broken and needs to be fixed. Before that claim is made, the government officials planning to bring the change will have been misusing their positions of power to "break" the system. This is to build public acceptance that all will be lost if change is not had. The phrase "If it isn't broken, government will fix it until it is" is an observation of the tactic in use.

POLITICS: Litany of what's wrong
It’s really amazing, they spent hundreds of thousands of dollars building a 9/11 monument for the 3,000-plus who died as a result of that tragedy, not to mention the thousands of troops we lost, supposedly looking for one man who was never charged for that event. Bush Jr. said repeatedly they were not even looking for him, while many more hundreds or thousands lost their home due to the bank fraud and are homeless as a result of it, then after foreclosing on all those homes, the banks got the bailout, not the people who only got to pick up the tab and pay for something they never got. Nobody seems to remember the skull and bones that so many of our presidents have been members of; look up its meaning.

It should be noted that Clinton’s reputation is based on the fact that he is the only Democrat to have recently been elected to the presidency for an eight-year term, balanced the budget and ended up with a surplus, however his election, balanced budget and surplus came about only because the Republicans took control of Congress in the 1992 elections and ended the era of “Big Government and Welfare as we know it.”

Arriving a few days ago in Coeur d’Alene I was amazed to see what I thought were drunk drivers all around me. When I looked closer, though, I realized that they were not drunk but were using cell phones or texting. The thing that was so clear to me was that the majority of these careless people were driving in the precise manner that I watched for in my former job as a policeman when looking for drunk drivers.

ATHEISTS: Don't miss final chapter
In regard to the letter written by Dina Fish under the headline “ATHEISTS: The light is shining,” I would like to comment that you have shed light on only one-half of the story. Yes, God did create us in His image, and He created us perfect. However He created us with the choice to be obedient or not. Since we, mankind, chose to be disobedient, sin came into the world and as a result we are separated from God because He cannot condone sin.
SCHOOLS: Support those offering choice
The Coeur d’Alene School District has implemented a cutting edge approach to education which is being recognized nationwide as preferred by parents and students. We have schools of choice. ELECTION: So much at stake
Perhaps mine is a voice from the “wilderness,” but I feel that voice is better than no voice heard at all. Time is running out on the decision to change the political direction of our great nation. Almost three years ago I began to form an opinion on the “change” our current president introduced to the people of this nation. It is briefly outlined below in this letter.
GNOSTIC: No, it isn't right
Dina Fish (Sept. 7) seems to have settled into a designer life. “I for one am Gnostic due to the fact that it’s right for me.” Not that it’s right, you understand, but it’s right for ME; right or wrong it’s what makes me comfortable. And small wonder — Gnosticism separates people into the select few who receive special knowledge (gnosis), a lower class who must be content with mere faith and the lowest class who are preoccupied with worldly cares. Fish has selected the highest class due to the fact that it’s right for her. A little ego showing there?
OBAMA: In this together
“It’s you, the American people who give me hope!” President Obama exclaimed in his acceptance speech to run for a second term. PROGRESS has been a theme at the Democratic convention; giving respect to the hard-work and self-responsibility that characterize the American people. Also understanding that we are in this together and when the middle class advances we are all better off.
DEMS: The next civil war
An article in The Press from the Sept. 6 (World/Nation) section heading reads, “Democrats change platform to include God and Jerusalem as the capital of Israel.” The embarrassing reversal was compounded by chaos and uncertainty on the convention floor.
WANTED: One humane cat-catcher
You had a nice article about KHS. But I have a complaint. I went in a year ago to see about getting help with some pregnant cats that had been dropped off at our road three years ago. Well I’m loaded with cats: three litters this year. Anyway, when I asked if they knew of anyone who would help me live trap them the lady said they don’t do anything with farrow/barn cats. She handed me a pamphlet with the spay/neuter prices. I tried to tell her I can’t catch them and even if I could, on SS I couldn’t afford it. She basically fluffed me off.

OBAMA: Idahoan predicts future
Fellow Americans, make no doubt about it, your choice in which this nation is going to go after November’s election is very clear. You will either turn your country over to the “millionaires and the billionaires” and hope that they decide to create jobs for the middle-class, OR you will take charge of your own destiny and support me again so that I, Barack Obama, can complete the job that you sent me to Washington to do. A job which is to help the poor, the elderly, the disadvantage, the middle-class to share in America’s prosperity. You will choose from tax breaks for the rich, or you will choose jobs. You will choose to support the destruction of Medicare or you will choose to preserve it for decades to come. Yes, your choice is very clear and I ask you to help me to finish the work I was sent here to do.

This letter, which is actually more of a mini-sermon, seems to reflect Ms. Budd's limited understanding of certain American English words as well as a considerably inaccurate concept of both ancient and American history; to say nothing of her profound misunderstanding of some of the most basic precepts contained in our Constitution.

WASTE: Answer is recycling
It’s interesting that the Kootenai County Solid Waste Department is seeking additional acreage for future waste disposal. I moved here from a state that promoted residential recycling by providing containers for recycling. These containers were picked up the same day trash was picked up at curb side. A good 80 percent of what is being tossed out as “trash,” i.e. plastics, cardboard, newspaper, metal etc., can and should be recycled. I contacted the governor’s office about this situation but have yet to hear back from them. We shouldn’t need more acreage. What we need is a convenient way to recycle.
