RECYCLE: Why we need more

| September 9, 2012 9:00 PM

I couldn’t agree more with Richard Petrovic’s comments on WASTE (Sept. 2). Since moving here from a state where recycling was a “given,” I have been troubled each time I throw newspapers, cans, plastics, etc., in one trash can along with all the waste to be picked up each week. Rinsing out milk bottles, cans, plastics and stacking newspapers in a second barrel probably used to take me about 20 minutes a month and I always felt good about doing my part to save our environment.

It is appalling that we load our landfills with things that could be recycled. Perhaps the governor has too much on his plate to worry about such things, but there must be some department that could introduce this idea to the public for comment. Perhaps some of our tax dollars could be used to help the waste management department with the cost of additional trash cans and a second run with the trucks on each pick-up day.

Let’s hear more comments and see if we can bring it to a vote!
