SCHOOLS: Support those offering choice
The Coeur d’Alene School District has implemented a cutting edge approach to education which is being recognized nationwide as preferred by parents and students. We have schools of choice. There are six schools of choice: Sorensen Magnet School of Arts and Humanities; Ramsey Magnet School of Science; Hayden Meadows International Baccalaureate Primary Years Program; Lakes Magnet School of Science, Health, and Art; Coeur d’Alene High School, Advanced Placement Program; and Project/Bridge Academy Alternative High School.
All of these programs were researched and approved by members of the elected Coeur d’Alene School Board who felt these programs gave parents and students options. I laud the board, administration and teachers for their willingness to make these bold moves.
Unfortunately, our current school board has removed one choice from parents and students by overturning the work of the previous board members. Three of these members were recently appointed, not elected by taxpayers. They decided to eliminate the Lake City High School International Baccalaureate Diploma Program during their July board meeting.
Schools of choice give you the power to put your child in a magnet school when space is available. Schools of choice give you the opportunity to move to another school if you do not agree with the educational opportunities in your school zone. If you believe in choice in education and approve of the education your child’s school provides, let the board know that you will not support eliminating any options available for your child’s future education.
