BIBLE: Don't confuse with politics

| September 19, 2012 9:00 PM

I grow extremely tired of the distortions I find in some of these letters. The ones I currently want to address are those from the misguided souls who claim that the Bible requires us to be charitable and therefore the Democrats are right in providing ever increasing welfare.

Please go back and re-read your Bibles. The exhortations to help the poor are directed to you and I and not to the state. I have no quarrel with the state taking some steps to help the poor but to reference the Bible to support these ever expanding activities is a gross misunderstanding of the facts. God does not shower money like manna down on the poor nor does He provide for an all powerful state to do it for Him. Do you think that the state will be called before Him upon its death to explain how it helped the poor? And when you are so called do you think the answer “I voted for the Democrats” will get you a free ticket? And what of the politician who says “I proposed legislation to take money from people to give to the poor.” I suspect he’ll be shown those stone tablets with “Thou shalt not steal” highlighted. (I’m pretty sure Robin Hood did not fare too well when his turn came.) No. God lets us all run about doing as we please but then at the end He settles all the accounts.
