PTE campus location: Three students' views
The KTEC site would present undue hardship for students who would have to drive from that campus to the main campus to take their core academic classes. It would represent an average of 12 miles one-way travel distance from the KTEC site to the main campus. With the price of gas hovering around $4 a gallon, that would be asking those students to spend $8 a day on average. If you do the math that is asking those PTE students to spend on average an extra $500+ per semester to be in a trades program, compared to the programs that are offered on campus.

Teen sheds light on depression battle
Nearly one in six students has seriously considered suicide and one in 12 has attempted it. There are multiple reasons why a teenager might become depressed. For example, teens can develop feelings of worthlessness and inadequacy over their grades, school performance, social status with peers, sexual orientation, or family life. No appetite or excessive eating, loss of interest, increased fatigue, complaints of pain, sadness, drop in grades, no sleep or sleeping all the time are just a few signs of depression. Depression can lead to dark thoughts, which can include wishing to be dead, wishing to hurt themselves, wishing to hurt others either emotionally or physically. Teens don't know how to deal with depression.

MLP: Try and split infinitives
It may be difficult for Mrs. Language Person's three or four regular readers to believe, but occasionally that Snitty Old Bitty will indeed concede. Case in point: the split infinitive. First things first; one must define the infinitive verb form. An infinitive, you may recall, is identified by the juxtaposition of a verb with "to," whether expressed or shyly invisible.

Since the early portion of 2013, sea-surface temperatures along the South American coastline and the Equatorial regions were slightly cooler than normal. In late February and early March, ocean temperatures were warming and that was starting to look like the formation of a new El Nino. We're still in a La Nada, the in-between cooler La Nina and warmer El Nino. But, most computer forecast models are now leaning toward a new La Nina by the fall season.

The process of creating great wine is one that requires equal doses of art and science. The best winemakers we have encountered over the years we have been involved in the wine business balance these two key and constantly shifting "ingredients" to craft delicious wines. How to keep healthy breasts
Doctor of Oriental Medicine
So much focus is on breast cancer, conventional treatment for breast cancer, and "early detection" of breast cancer via mammograms and self-exams, but little attention is given to keeping them healthy in the first place. We can do much to maintain healthy breasts at home with relatively little effort. It needs to become a lifestyle, not just a thing we do at the moment or when someone diagnoses you with breast cancer.

Spring gardening
Food for Thought
I slowly crack open my left eye early Saturday morning hoping to discover bright sun streaming through my bedroom window. Unsure of the result, I raise my head to look at the alarm which reads 5:34 a.m. in blaringly bright red numbers. Too early for the sun to declare the day's options I close my eyes in hope of continuing the race between Michael Caine in his Aston Martin and me in my Mini Cooper borrowed for my dream from the 1969 movie, "The Italian Job," that I fell asleep to the night before.

Whether you're a master gardener or a novice, growing your own vegetables is a great activity for the whole family. This growing season take advantage of the excellent opportunity to teach your child the responsibilities involved in the cultivating, growing, and harvesting process. Remember, vegetable gardens can come in all shapes and sizes. Whether you've got a large piece of land with multiple rows, a small strip of dirt at the edge of the yard, or just a few large planter pots with your favorite veggies growing, the harvest will be the same: A priceless experience for the children!

Osteoporosis drugs help men, too
While the bone-thinning disease known as osteoporosis is often thought to be a woman's health problem, it also poses a significant fracture risk for men. Women's lifetime risk of suffering an osteoporotic fracture is about 50 percent; for men, the risk is estimated to be about 25 percent. Fortunately, men can avail themselves of the same class of drugs (bisphosphonates) that women use to prevent the loss of bone mass and derive equal benefit. According to recent research, use of the drug zoledronic acid (Reclast) helped men with osteoporosis significantly reduce their risk of fractures of the spine. The first step toward realizing this benefit requires men to have their bone density tested and evaluated.

Elderly people give us joy and wisdom
Last Saturday we loaded up our Alpaca socks, scarves, yarn and teddy bears from our store in Hayden to attend the Home and Garden show featured at the Garden Plaza independent living retirement center in Post Falls. Our host Beverly was very gracious to allow us to be part of this very special event. They have quite a facility for our elderly community members! The best way to describe it is a town within a town. It's much like the Hilton in that you have a top notch place to live with all the amenities (Post office, gym, spa, hair salon, restaurants, activities) which are located inside of the living center area. I noticed how the guests were part of a close knit community since they live within walking distance of their neighbors and do not have to bother going outside or driving. Spending the day with these folks brought back fond memories of times earlier in my life where I spent a large part of my time with the elderly.

How cupping therapy can improve your health
Cupping therapy is one of the oldest methods of traditional Chinese medicine. In China, cupping is used primarily to treat respiratory conditions such as bronchitis, asthma, and congestion; arthritis; gastrointestinal disorders; and pain. Some practitioners also use cupping to treat depression, anxiety, fatigue and to reduce swelling. Fleshy sites on the body, such as the back and stomach (and, to a lesser extent, the arms and legs), are the most common sites for treatment.

VETERAN: It's not just a knife
Last Saturday I received a commemorative Buck Knife for my military service and as a recipient of the Purple Heart I received in Vietnam in 1969. I have to tell you, this meant more than I can express in these words. Coming home in Novermber of ‘69 to be spat upon, cursed at and made to feel unlike anything I had ever felt, left a lifetime impression on a 21-year-old 1st Lieutenant. In the years after that greeting and my dealings with what is now called PTSD, only my family and a few close friends ever knew I had served my country in Vietnam.

Is your Realtor protecting you?
It is a truth, unpleasant perhaps to many, that political influence is important to getting things done in this country. All groups employ lobbyists to promote their agendas to municipalities and legislatures at all levels of government. From humanitarian causes to the goals of industries, if your voice is to be heard, nothing gets attention like campaign contributions. The amount of those contributions is directly related to the number of contributing members of a particular lobby.

Let's pay tribute to our teachers
In June 1934 my family moved from the arid high plains of Eastern Colorado to Post Falls because of the Dust Bowl. We were awestruck by the beauty of the area, the mountains, and - previously unknown to us - the wealth of fruits, berries and vegetables which were in such abundance. We also were gratefully appreciative of the friendliness and generosity of the people. My father had 6 children and his total financial worth was the $20 in his pocket upon our arrival. That is another story in itself, but that is not the topic at hand.
CORE: Believe Glenn Beck, folks
Read the article about Common Core in Friday’s paper. I’m retired but not a grandfather, but this scares the hell out of me. It is anti-American. A couple of the people behind this are Bill Gates of Microsoft, a very big progressive, and Bill Ayers, a founder of the Weather Underground, try to blow up police stations and also the Pentagon in Washington, D.C. He is also a frequent guest of the president. The past few years he has been a professor at a college in Illinois and now has since retired. Also a female member, forgot her name right now. She has been released from prison after serving 22 years for murdering two police officers and security guard in a robbery. She is now a professor at a university back east.
And the Healthiest Beer is...
When you're a dietitian you can never go out to dinner with friends without nutrition questions entering into the conversation. Last night's question: What is the healthiest beer to order? This, of course, is a loaded question and especially difficult to answer if you are a wine connoisseur. The answer depends on how you define healthy. Is it high in anti-inflammatory benefits, high in folate, low in calories, low in carbohydrates or lower in alcohol?

When an appellation falls
We are very fortunate as wine consumers here in North Idaho as we continue to taste and have access to wines from new and different appellations, or growing areas. In the last 5 plus years since we have opened our shop we have seen wines from Portugal, Lebanon and Greece become available. It is only a matter of time before the wines of Slovenia and other former "East Block" countries enter the market. At the same time the entries from New Zealand and South America have dramatically increased and while we have tasted some from all of these areas that are great and others that have disappointed they have lent depth and richness to our overall market to go along with our own local wine producing regions and the more traditional old world countries.

Take Aspirin at first signs of heart attack
Those in the early grips of a heart attack may find that chewing an aspirin tablet will help save their lives. Heart attacks are often the result of a blood clot in the coronary artery that blocks blood flow. Aspirin may help overcome these heart events by inhibiting the formation of the blood clots. The most effective way to help restore blood flow in the event of a heart attack is to chew and swallow a regular adult-strength, 325-milligram tablet. Neither a baby-strength (81-milligram) aspirin tablet, which many heart patients take on a daily basis, nor a coated aspirin tablet, which is designed to be absorbed slowly, will suffice in the event of a heart attack.

We all are saddened by Sandy Hook and the horror that occurred there by a mentally disturbed person who stole a gun from his mother and killed her also. There are many other stories of mass killings by insane people, a military officer and others. But who has been there to stop these people when they start killing people; the police? Many times it is an armed citizen who stops the madness. There are many of examples on the Internet of armed citizens saving police officers, their families, themselves and others.

A brain wasting disease

Alzheimer's Disease (AD) is a progressive brain-wasting disease. There is an irreversible destruction/loss of brain cells (neurons) that result in the impairment of memory, reasoning, and intellectual abilities. As the brain cells die, the brain itself shrinks, which then progresses to the point of an inability to perform normal activities of daily living, and eventually dying.

I know it may not be as important as some other letters but I found it crazy when I went into a big store (we’ll call it Wally World) and being only 16 they would not sell me a can of spray primer for my truck. Twenty years ago you could buy TNT at age 14. Is this where the U.S. is at?

ASSAULT: Weapons of mass destruction
I recently heard three retired teachers from Stockton, Calif., speaking about gun violence. In 1989 they worked at a Stockton school when a mentally disturbed man with an AK47 murdered five children and injured numerous others. One of the women said she has tolerated gun violence, but she became angry after Sandy Hook. When asked why she was getting involved, another retired teacher said, “Because nothing is being done.”

Stick it to pain
I've long had this fantasy that Western medicine will merge with Eastern, that medical schools will absorb ancient wisdom and simpler treatments into a blended approach to health. Why take a pill for acute pain if massage will do? Meditation and other ancient practices reduce long-term stress, in turn reducing pain, in turn alleviating certain symptoms and conditions. Sometimes more intervention becomes necessary - surgery and drugs aren't always avoidable. But why must it be one or the other, with the sum of the world's knowledge and experience?

WATER: Caution on treatment upgrades
Legally, it might be hard to question Judge Luster’s decision to allow the city to go ahead with the water treatment plant expansion. Still, the decision leaves me with several questions. Why is not more being done in Idaho to eliminate phosphorous before it enters the wastewater system? This question is important because a 2012 EPA agreement with the state of Wisconsin eliminated the need for costly wastewater treatment plants. Instead, they banned certain detergents and designed a pollution credit trading system to achieve EPA’s approval. Can we get this deal?

Hot or cold, alpaca socks are a treat for your feet
Whether I'm flying on an airplane or out at the barn with the horses or at the gym I have my trusty alpaca socks on my feet. I truly love them! I still have other brands in my drawer but I always reach for my alpaca socks. Now let me tell you why. Maybe it's because I could (If I chose to) wear them for several days in a row and not have stinky feet. It could also be that my feet always feel dry with my alpaca socks due to their exceptional ability to wick moisture unlike cotton or wool socks. I used to complain of cold feet on a regular basis but with alpaca socks my feet are much warmer than ever before. This alone has been truly life changing! I can now focus on living life outside and not on how uncomfortable I am when it is cold. I can leave the ski slopes when I'm tired not because my feet are cold and burning. This is awesome!

Is history about to repeat itself?
This month marks the fifth year of this column. It began as an effort to keep you informed of our real estate market in the face of gloomy news as the market began to sag in other locales. While the real estate bubble burst in some areas, we appeared still strong. It wasn't until late in 2008 that the cold reality struck - it was over. The phones grew silent as the snow began to pile up. Traffic came to a halt as the plows struggled to keep up with record snowfall that winter, on the heels of a record boom in the real estate market.

Perhaps The Press should have surveyed other pending lawsuits to determine if they could have been even “funnier.” The Press should not have intimated that this local matter, involving current residents and significant taxpayers, is a “joke.”

EPA: Facility vote still important
Many know I’ve been outspoken about my attitude and opinions toward the EPA and their forced unfunded mandates. What a crazy turn of events with the new treatment facility going to a vote. Because I’ve been watching this mandate transpire for the last two years, there is a sense of excitement I feel about the current situation. Regardless of who’s right or wrong on the Coeur d’Alene City Council, I’m glad that this is happening for a few reasons.

Immigration reform - A conservative approach
A consensus has been building about the need to reform and modernize our immigration system. While I am optimistic that Republicans, including "tea party" members, will support reform, it must be done right. We must create a system for the 21st century and beyond, one that honors the rule of law, provides a fair path for those seeking to come to the United States and fixes our broken borders.

Spring cleaning is here again
This time of year we are busy putting winter away, and looking forward to the cleanliness that spring brings. Greenhouses and gardens are getting cleaned up in preparation for a new garden, yards are getting raked and cleaned of the rotting leaves, pine needles and other garbage accumulated during the winter, cars are getting washed, and in general, it's clean up time. We so look forward to spring and the fresh, newness that the season brings. But what about your body? Have you started cleaning it up from winter sluggishness, comfort eating (of usually the wrong foods), lots of sugar over the many holidays that winter hails, and getting prepared for the freshness of spring, internally?

Expanded use of prostrate cancer drug
The FDA recently approved the expanded use of a drug that was initially approved to treat prostate cancer patients whose disease had progressed after treatment with the chemotherapy drug docetaxel. Now, Zytiga can also be used to treat men with late-stage, hormone therapy-resistant prostate cancer before they undergo chemotherapy. Zytiga works by decreasing production of the male sex hormone testosterone, which stimulates the growth of prostate tumors. The approval of this expanded use of Zytiga was made under the FDA's priority review program, which provides an accelerated six-month review for medications that may present major advances in treatment or provide a treatment when adequate therapy is not available for the treatment of disease.

Restraint and Balance: What it really means
In reviewing and describing wines for both our column here in The Press and for customers in the shop, we frequently talk about restraint and balance in winemaking. Much of this is based on what our palates prefer as wine consumers and less about a quality judgment. We taste wines all the time from a wide array of winemakers working with an even bigger array of varietals from appellations all over the world that are well made but for a variety of reasons just don't appeal to us.
Kids' Menus: Times they are a changin'
Move over chicken nuggets and fries. New regulations for healthier restaurant menus are not just for adults. Traditional kids' menus are about to get a makeover as well. Children love having their own menus at restaurants. This is not just because they usually have coloring sheets or word puzzles on the back, but because they include some of their favorite foods - macaroni and cheese, grilled cheese and chicken fingers. These foods don't win any nutrition awards.

Two of my favorite life memories involve fishing - one with my parents and the other with my granddaughter. Water, wilderness and family ground me.

Straighten your teeth without looking like a teen again
Over the weekend I got a call from my dad. He was asking for advice the regarding the slight crowding of his teeth. It is something that has always bothered him a little bit, and he figured it was finally time for him to get them straightened. His main concern, though, was that he is a middle-aged man who constantly interacts with other people as a part of his career. He did not want the traditional metal-mouth appearance, nor did he want a lot of hassle with his treatment.

Judge: Wastewater vote not needed
First District Judge John Luster granted judicial confirmation for the city of Coeur d’Alene to take on debt to improve the wastewater treatment plant. The ruling, issued today, said the expenditures were ordinary and necessary and therefore voter approval wasn’t required to pay for the $33 million in upgrades. The ruling could be moot, because the city voted last week to go to an election on the matter because City Councilman Steve Adams has said he would appeal the judge’s decision, which would tie the issue up in court for up to a year. The Press is working on a full story.
