REGAN: Fiscally wise for schools

| April 21, 2013 9:00 PM

In the upcoming election for Coeur d’Alene school board, we have a golden opportunity to elect Brent Regan. Brent is both an innovative thinker and a leader who works well with others. When Brent is on the job, problems get solved. It’s that simple.

The board has become more conservative over the past two years. The reason is the former board was a rubber stamp for the teachers’ union. It’s acceptable for the union to guard the interests of teachers, but as if there is no corresponding entity guarding the interests of students and taxpayers, we get expensive programs without good academic results.

Fiscal irresponsibility created distrust in the old guard. Paying an architect $750,000 to design a new Lakes Middle School before it had been approved by the voters is just one example of how the former board undermined the public confidence. When the district went back to the taxpayers for more bond or levy money, they were met with well-deserved cynicism. Now there is accountability, an essential ingredient in community confidence and smooth functioning of our schools.

There are clear reasons a conservative approach, providing balance to our district, has been put in place. We must ensure this standard is protected by electing Brent Regan to the board. Brent is exemplary in intelligence, compassion and generosity. His willingness to lend his talents to all children in our community is an extraordinary gift we must not overlook.

Please keep balance and accountability in our school board. Elect Brent Regan.
