POEM: The Basketball Game
|

Our eyes move back and forth
Back and forth
As the orange pounds the floor
The player makes the pass
And the point looks down the court
And all this beauty is drowned out
The parents will do the fighting
There is always the self-appointed guru
The overjoyed mother
The vicarious lover
The past star
The third ref
The angry wife
The loud screamer
They all do their best to make this ugly
With nothing but pride to gain
The players take the court
And with nothing to gain
The parents take the familiar cold metal stands
Every game I’ve ever been to
The parents fill the stereotypes
They walk in with bombs and guns
They ruin the game for the rest
Parents have always been and will always be
The worst part about sports
