Photo chock full of memories
SANDPOINT — Once in a while you stumble across an iconic photo that warrants more than just a quick glance, that is clearly worth more than a thousand words.
BROOKS: Kind, caring, credible
I wanted to write and let you know I think Bill Brooks is wonderful. I read one of his articles and was a bit confused on one issue regarding credit cards vs. debit cards. I had mentioned to him what I had learned from Dave Ramsey so after I got off the phone with Bill, I did a little more research and he did as well. He was kind enough to call me back and discuss what we had found out. I was happy and so was Bill — we both learned from this.

Ushering in the North Idaho new year
As I wrap up my first year in Coeur d’Alene, we close another chapter in our community, nation and world. Fittingly, much is to be celebrated during this time of year, and it’s important to reach out to those very special people and organizations that make a difference in our lives.
SHOW: Missed opportunity
The Traditions of Christmas show at the Kroc Center, produced by Laura Little Theatricals, was once again a super production, except for one thing. While it’s great that each branch of the military is recognized and honored, Ms. Little inexplicably refuses to honor Gold Star families, who have lost a loved one while defending this great nation. When Ms. Little accidentally called me, I seized the opportunity to offer to write a short couple of lines to insert for the narrator at the beginning of Act II, where veterans are honored. Ms. Little replied that she had no time for this, thank you, and hung up on me. What a nice lady, so full of Christmas joy and goodwill to men!

What you don't know about school challenges

Nice to read that Idaho’s youth are wising up to tobacco and other inhaled products. It would be nice if local government would aid this effort by preventing tobacco/vapor retailers from running stores near our schools. Here in Rathdrum, we have a vapor shop and a tobacco shop next to our high school. These adult businesses are within a stone’s throw of the high school. Seems clear that their ultimate goal is to sell to “new customers” as soon as possible.

How about a truce for Christmas
It’s Christmas Weekend, so let’s make a deal.
KENNEDY: Lesson for today
When President Kennedy proposed and got his tax cut through Congress, the Democrats were all in favor of it. What is different today? Do people know history enough to weigh it or do people listen to biased media only? By the way, Kennedy’s tax cut was great for the economy back then.

Bold 'Last Jedi' bolsters the 'Star Wars' legacy
It’s difficult to distinguish general audience reaction to “Star Wars: The Last Jedi” from the “Internet” reaction to the film. Perhaps in these especially divisive times, it shouldn’t be a shock to go online and hear how polarizing “The Last Jedi” has been to its hardcore and even casual fans.

PERMITS: Look at the root
Lately, there has been a discussion of comments on and grousing about the proposed elimination of building permits in Kootenai County, or, at least, making them optional. The latest is the “My Turn” by Deborah Rose. Most who have weighed in on the subject make very valid points, both pro and con.

TAX BILL: Here comes inflation
I wrote to Senator Risch urging him to oppose the Republican tax bill. He wrote back that he supports it because it “strengthens families, grows business and boosts our national economy.” But the Republican tax bill does not do any of those things.
WOLF: An urban warning
I just want to give people a head’s up. I saw a wolf chasing a deer at Hanley and 15th Street at 6:30 p.m. on Dec. 19. I heard there is a wolf/dog hybrid living in the area, so it could be that dog, but I spend a lot of time hunting and have seen a fair share of wolves and it looked like a wolf. Of course, both the deer and the wolf were traveling at Mach 5 when sighted, but it might be better to assume it was a wolf and take proper precautions with pets and livestock. Merry Christmas!

TAX BILL: Fuels national debt
For decades the Republican Party has touted the need for fiscal restraint and a balanced budget. Now, however, even with a majority in Congress, they propose to add $1.1 trillion to $1.8 trillion to the national debt over the next 10 years. The present corporate tax of 35 percent is too high; however, reducing the tax to 21 percent with no other replacement funds will likely increase the deficit beyond the present optimistic projections.

True church-state union makes a strong nation
Mr. Black foments fear in his recent series of articles condemning the union of church and state. In reality a strong nation keeps religion and politics together. The rebellion against the church and state union, a flagrant disregard for the rights of Jesus Christ and His rightful kingship over society, began in the Dark Ages.

As a megafan of “The Room,” the 2003 melodrama widely considered to be one of the best worst movies of all-time, it’s impossible for me to objectively assess “The Disaster Artist,” director James Franco’s restaging of the behind-the-scenes turmoil of the now-cult classic.

County got it right on building code
Personal property rights are a fundamental part of our American liberties. Increasingly, property owners are being forced to comply with restrictive building codes which severely limit what they are allowed to do on their own property, adding extra expense, and creating frustrating and expensive bureaucratic hoops to jump through. Kootenai County’s decision to reject the new building codes and adopt an ordinance allowing voluntary compliance is a step forward in protecting owner-builders, encouraging sustainable innovation, and safeguarding property rights.

TAXATION: Fair and balanced?
I’m thinking of the “fair and balanced” news station, and suddenly transferred the idea to the taxation issue. What is more fair? The working person has always been taxed by the supposedly fair “income tax”, on his or her salary, having it conveniently withheld from the payroll check. That’s always seemed fair to me, as a citizen to help my government fund its budget. But I read that to tax an heir who receives some “income” way beyond the average wage-earner’s income, in an amount above some $5 million, isn’t a fair tax, and should be eliminated. What, may I ask, is fair about that? In my opinion; the “estate tax” is the most fair and balanced tax that our country could ever come up with. No way would I expect to not pay an income tax on the amount above five million bucks somebody leaves me.

Building on faulty premises
Homebuyers, young couples and retirees may need to learn the meaning of buyer beware. Some of our Kootenai County commissioners do not believe there is a need for the county (not cities) to issue building permits. If adopted, the need for “compliance with building codes will no longer be mandatory.” A local resident “supports the commissioners’ decision in name of property rights and less cost and regulation.”

BLESSINGS: Little is big
God demonstrated to us that to love is to give and I see that every day. It can be as simple and easy as letting someone go in front of you at the store because they have less stuff. It’s the little things that bless people that we don’t think is a big deal, but the look on the person’s face tells us it is. So don’t miss an opportunity to show His love and kindness to those who need it… and we ALL do.

This week, reason prevailed and the American minerals supply chain won. After being forced into a nonsensical rulemaking process born from environmental litigation, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) decided not to impose new, crippling financial responsibility requirements on the hardrock mining industry. Not only was there no justification for these requirements, but the Western states where the vast majority of the nation’s mining happens were up in arms over the proposal. That’s because they knew exactly what this regulation would have meant for mining investment and the related economic stimulus that it provides their states. And they know firsthand that protections are already in place, and are working.

ATLANTA — Idaho’s defense created four takeaways and the offense had its most prolific outing in more than a month as the Vandals closed the season — and its 22-year stay in the Football Bowl Subdivision — with a 24-10 win Saturday at Georgia State before 14,163 at Georgia State Stadium.

MONUMENTS: Priceless treasures
The National Monuments established in the U.S. since the time of Theodore Roosevelt have protected antiquities, Native American cultural sites, historical sites and natural environments that are rare and important. Now they are under threat — a Monumental Disaster in the making as the current administration is reducing at least 10 sites including the majestic Grand Staircase Escalante and the Native American cultural treasure, Bears Ears in Utah. I visit these wonders at least twice a year. They belong to me and to all of us. Save the National Monuments.

Today's ghastly groaner
A group of chess enthusiasts checked into a hotel and were standing in the lobby discussing their recent tournament victories. After about an hour, the manager came out of the office and asked them to disperse. “But why?” they asked, as they moved off. “Because,” he said, “I can’t stand chess nuts boasting in an open foyer.”
FORESTS: Burn that bill
It’s bad enough that industrial logging can occur on 250 acres of public land, and be excluded from routine environmental review. This includes limited opportunity for public involvement. The Resilient Federal Forests Act of 2017 (HR 2936) would drastically increase this scenario, and allow 10,000 acres of public land to be logged without the necessary environmental review or public input. It could multiply to 30,000 acres if developed by a collaborative group!
Post Falls overcomes free-throw woes, tops U-Hi
SPOKANE VALLEY — Even on a bad night from the free-throw line, Post Falls did enough to take a road win on Saturday night.
Home affordability threatened
Last week the National Association of Realtors sounded the alarm calling on all its members to write their Congress members to block the latest version of the Tax Reform Bill. Both the House and Senate bills would require sellers to have lived in their residence for a longer period of time before qualifying for the capital gains tax exclusion on the sale of a primary home. They would have to live in their house at least five years out of the last eight. Right now, the requirement is two years out of the last five.

AVISTA: Seeking clarity
Avista is increasing electric rates for North Idaho, saying it’s to “cover costs accumulated in 2016.” However, another testimony claims it’s planning to spend $24.2 million between 2017 and 2019 on additions to Colstrip, a coal-fired power plant in Montana. So, which is it? And what is being “added” to this coal plant? Avista is not forthcoming with any details about this investment.

The woman behind the wine
Most college students show up for a party with their favorite, cheap beer, ready to share. But not Shelly, she often appeared at gatherings with a bottle of wine in hand, almost always a red, often a pinot noir.

HOT SPRING HAVEN
I’ve often wondered whether a person named Jerry Johnson ever existed. Was he the man who first discovered the pools of hot water hidden along a creek just up from the Lochsa River? I’ve asked Forest Service rangers, and researched it on the internet. No one knows. But in my mind’s eye he is the man that I met there one morning many years ago.

TRUMP: Consumers, beware
I do not think a college education is a prerequisite for understanding political issues. Understanding the issues does require time and some study. Voting a straight party line is an easy shortcut which allows people, regardless of education level, to avoid learning more about issues. The result is often one that works against that voter.

One candidate's uphill battle
There’s an old expression, “pride cometh before the fall.” Ancient Greek dramatists wrote great theatrics around this all too common human foible. In these tragedies, they wrote about hubris, the excessive pride many people in power possess though they falter at fair exercising of this power.
