Lakeland downs 5A foes Lake City, Coeur d'Alene

| December 14, 2017 12:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — A little shorthanded, Lakeland showed its depth in dual wins over Lake City and Coeur d’Alene on Wednesday night at Coeur d’Alene.

Lakeland, missing five varsity starters, beat Lake City 55-24 and Coeur d’Alene 54-29.

“Our kids wrestled tough, and I was really happy with how we performed without those starters,” Lakeland coach Rob Edelblute said. “We had five freshmen that stepped up and wrestled hard. We’re really excited for the future.”

“Tavis Woempner (113 pounds), Will Edelblute (126), Ryan Quimby (138), Larry Johnson (145), Cage Hendry (152) and Logan Kelley (160) went unbeaten on the night for Lakeland.

“Our veteran guys stepped up and wrestled hard,” Edelblute said. “Having some of the younger kids step in and fill those shoes, it was kind of impressive to see how they handled it. They took it with maturity and took advantage of the opportunity.”

Payton Keough (132) went unbeaten for Coeur d’Alene, which beat Kellogg 78-7 and lost to Lakeland 54-29.

“Payton always gives a good effort,” Coeur d’Alene coach Jeff Moffat said. “He just stayed solid all night, kept the pressure on and did a good job in both of his matches. Lakeland’s a tough squad, but I liked the way we wrestled. They’re going to have a chance to win a state (4A) title. It’s always a good battle with them.”

Caden Hess (98 pounds), Ricky Thomas (132) and Zane Monaghan (170) won both of their matches for Lake City, which beat Kellogg 69-9 after losing 55-24 to Lakeland.

“Ricky won two tight matches where we needed points in the third period, and he did a good job of closing both of those out,” Lake City coach Corey Owen said. “Zane, he’s having a great season and continuing right along with that. Caden looked good in both of his matches. They’re all guys we’re going to be looking for this weekend, as well as the rest of the season to help guide these younger teams. We didn’t beat Lakeland, but they’re just a better and more experienced team than us right now.”

All four teams will compete in the Tri-State Invitational on Friday at North Idaho College.
