Post Falls leads after first day

| December 16, 2017 12:00 AM

COEUR d’ALENE — After the first day in the 47th Tri-State Invitational, a familiar face sits on the top of the team standings.

Post Falls, behind semifinalists Braxton Mason (98 pounds), Ridge Lovett (126), Braydon Huber (152) and Coleton Kazmierczak (170), leads with 140 points through the quarterfinal round.

Mead is second with 116.

“It was a good day overall for us,” said Post Falls coach Pete Reardon, whose team also has nine wrestlers remaining in the consolation bracket. “There’s going to be some good and some bad with a tournament like this, but the kids just kept plugging away. We lost a few close matches and won a few. Both Coleton and Braxton had awesome days. They were a great surprise, but not to us. Sometimes you make the most of the draw, and they both did that. They got on a roll and it was awesome to see.”

Post Falls won Tri-State titles in 2014 and ’15, and was second last year. Defending champion Havre (Mont.) is fourth with 104 points, five points behind Moses Lake.

Alex Edelblute (106), William Edelblute (120) and Larry Johnson (145) advanced to the semis for Lakeland, which is sixth with 93.5 points.

Braydon Herbert of Timberlake will face Mason in a semifinal at 98 pounds. Isaiah Evans of Timberlake (120) also advanced to the semis.

Mead is second with 116 points, followed by Moses Lake in third with 109 and Havre (Mont.) fourth with 104.

Wrestling resumes today at 9 a.m. Semifinals are scheduled for around noon, with finals slated for around 5 p.m.
