IRONMAN: Cheers to Hadley, Cd'A
This last Sunday I completed my first Ironman and I have to say a huge thanks to the volunteers, but I have to tell you that every aspect of my visit was amazing. From the servers in the eateries, to the clerks in the stores, the encouragement and friendliness was incredible. The volunteers on the course were at many times saviours. In particular, I would like to extend a personal thanks to one of your Ironman pros. Brian Hadley not only took the time to take me on the courses, but his advice and caring nature not only kept my nerves calm but set me up for an amazing day. He took the time to help a complete stranger and a novice in the sport. Coeur d’Alene should be proud to have such a great professional reside in their town.

GOP: This Repub offers advice
It’s amazing how the current Republican Party is trying to stifle diverse opinions! They have their small minds made up and they get angry if anyone doesn’t go along with their plan. I’ve been a Republican for many years, but find it shocking the extreme ideas the far right want to force on everyone else. How dare they!

BIBLE: Literal is powerful
Mr. Hansen, my first response to your letter is this: What’s so wrong with literal? When you read a newspaper article about a car crash, you assume that the writer is referring to a real car crash. When you read a mystery novel, you assume that the writer is referring to a literal murder in the story. The same applies to the Bible: when it says that “God created the heavens and the Earth” why not assume that it really is saying that God created the heavens and the Earth? Granted, there are metaphors used, but the majority of the Bible refers to real life scenarios — a book full of mystic metaphors cannot have the same impact a literal, real, account does.

Are sugars and sweeteners toxic?
Did you know that on average people in the U.S. eat 152 pounds of sugar in one year. This is roughly 3 pounds a week and surprisingly, Americans are not the biggest consumers of sugar in the world. Sugar and sweeteners are in so much of what we consume we often are not even aware of it. Recent studies have shown sugars and some sweeteners are addictive and in the vast majority of studies it has been proven that over consumption of these sugars and sweeteners have a negative and even toxic effect on the body.

IRONMAN: First impression lasts
I arrived in your city last Monday in advance of Sunday’s Ironman triathlon. It was my first trip to your city, state and region. Immediately one can see and appreciate the beauty of the area.
IRONMAN: Rest of bike-boy story
I just wanted to thank Wendy Kilcoyne for the kind words that she wrote. (Ironmen Proof of real mettle June 26). I was the rider involved in the minor mishap on Lakeside Avenue. I can assure you that I am fine and I did indeed finish the race. I was greatly relieved the boy was not injured. In the end I guess my mom just raised me right and I am glad I had the presence of mind to conduct myself in a good sportsmanlike manner. I will let you know that my wife and I did this race; it was our first Ironman. We finished together hand in hand, and I would not trade anything for the memory.
SOCCER: Play ball, cable TV
With maybe thousands of youngsters playing soccer here, one may think Time Warner Cable would have GolTV on their lineup. GolTV shows hundreds of world class games, and the German Bundeslige — the top club Bayern Munich hired Pep Guardiola as a new coach, and this guy alone is worth watching!
IRONMAN: Thanks to everybody
I was in Coeur d’Alene over the weekend to participate in the Ironman triathlon. Thank you, residents of Coeur d’Alene, for your patience and hospitality during this event that causes so much disruption to your city. And a special huge thanks to all of the people who volunteered at the triathlon. It would not be possible to hold an event, especially one of this size, without you. Thank you!
WANTED: Big enough jail
In 2003 voters approved a one half percent sales tax increase to pay for the county jail expansion. I voted for it and thought it was a great idea. The mistake was that they didn’t build it big enough.
CITIES: Immoral is never OK
History always repeats itself. Since the beginning of time, immorality has become the downfall of many nations. Two travelers arrived into a city at night where a leading citizen greeted them. Knowing the wickedness of his city, the citizen encouraged the two men to stay that evening at his house where they could freshen up, have a meal, get a good night’s sleep and be on their way early in the morning.
GOP: Censure was right plan
The Republican Party called for a censure. Maybe it was the wrong word, but the idea behind it was right. When politicians take it upon themselves to make decisions contrary to what the people or their party members want, it is not a representative government anymore. America is not a democracy, but instead, a representative form of government, a Republic. These four legislators did not represent us as a people or a party, whatever their rationale. Nor did they represent republicanism as set out in our platform.

Don’t they know that the Border Patrol agents are suing Obama now in order to be able to enforce the laws of this country? Obama only enforces the laws he wants to enforce. So what if 20,000 (is that the correct figure?) more Border Patrol agents are added? That will only be 20,000 more plaintiffs added to the lawsuit!
AMNESTY: Not what's needed
If you haven’t noticed, the fix is in on immigration reform. Republicans are now touting so-called tough amendments regarding increased border security. Senator Marco Rubio is the front man for this sham.

A great fivesome
The annual conference of the Association of Idaho Cities in Boise last week was a great opportunity to meet with mayors, city council members, city managers and assorted department heads from dozens of municipalities from around the state. Topics included water quality standards, Idaho Health Exchange impacts, land use planning, capital projects, building and energy codes, funding infrastructure and neighboring communities collaborating to leverage resources. And that was just the first of three days of workshops.

Food for Thought
"Gramps, can you make us a fancy dinner?" my 6-year-old granddaughter asks on the last day of school. Removing her backpack and flip-flops she smiles, "I love your fancy dinners." Finding it impossible to say no I ask, "How fancy do you want it?" She laughs, "Really fancy!"

Six key supplements for athletic performance enhancement
There has been much research about endurance nutrition during racing. However, there has been little suggested for the recovery phase of training. This is one of the most important and least addressed aspects of training in all genre's of competition. Recovery is very important and as noted it often overlooked by athletes and coaches alike. The athletes main focus is on race day for what to eat and drink calculated down to the minute on when to take it during their race. The athlete rarely focus' on the recovery supplements which will allow them to recover more efficiently while repairing the muscle tearing from training and the oxidation effects of energy expenditure. These key supplements have been shown to aid and speed recovery time for endurance athletes: D-Ribose, Co-enzyme Q10, broad spectrum antioxidants, beta alanine, Creatine and HMB.

Winemaking talent
Over the past five plus years we have had the honor and privilege to work with some of the most talented winemakers from many of the North American Appellations. We have done tastings and winemaker dinners with these creative geniuses from Oregon, Idaho, Washington state, and many of the growing areas of California. During that time we have had winemakers up for repeat appearances only a handful of times, and this coming week we will be welcoming back not only one of the true winemaking talents from Walla Walla but also one of the most generous and genuinely nice people in the wine business.
The drug no one wants to talk about
Doctor of Oriental Medicine
When discussing addictions, we think about illegal drugs, certain medications, smoking and alcohol. Rarely do we even think about, much less talk about, sugar. According to research studies, sugar is more addictive than cocaine, heroin, and alcohol! Yet, it is considered "acceptable." Professor Bart Hoebel of Princeton University Department of Psychology and the Princeton Neuroscience Institute says "Our evidence from an animal model suggests that bingeing on sugar can act in the brain in ways very similar to drugs of abuse." He says that sugar follows patterns of craving and relapse which are "critical components of addiction."

COUNTY: Shackled by shortsightedness
I see the county commissioners are again looking at having a private company build a new jail that they would then lease. The problem is that they still haven’t requested an analysis on what their actual needs are. The Federal Department of Justice provides a free “needs analysis” to counties facing capacity problems at their jail facilities, so the counties have an expert unbiased opinion about what their actual needs are and what options they have to mitigate the problem without new construction. The last DOJ needs analysis that county has on record is the one that was requested prior to building the last jail expansion.

STATE: Meet your obligations
Despite a tax cut for corporations and high-income individuals in 2012, and another tax cut for businesses in 2013, there still seems to be a modest surplus projected for the state treasury this fiscal year. The governor, most of the Legislature and business lobbyists were in town last week to talk about that. Their solutions involve giving big business another big tax cut next year. Before the Legislature devises yet another way to further deplete the treasury, shouldn’t the Legislature first focus on adequately funding its current obligations?

CDA: Research could've helped
If you listen closely Kootenai County residents, you can hear a gag reflex emanating from the very heart of your beloved Coeur d’Alene as one more bad policy has been shoved down Americans’ throats, promulgated by another special Interest group. As ludicrous as the anti-discrimination bill was, the “Fad-Five” took the bait: hook, line and big stinker! (“Fad,” meaning trend friendly, “Five,” meaning the number of elected “suckers.”) Have any of the council members heard of “reverse discrimination!” Take note Coeur d’Alene business owners, you are no longer able to voice reasonable concerns of conscience in whom you can and cannot serve! It also means parents should closely watch their kids at public restrooms because they may get surprised by a voyeurlstically dressed woman who Is actually a man, now a lawfully protected-peeper!
CODE: Why the people fear it
I believe everyone who attended the prematurely adjourned ULUC hearing Monday, June 17 probably walked away with a somewhat sour taste in their mouths. What I witnessed as a rural property owner and current non-participant in the county political system was a strong desire of other rural property owners to express themselves at a “functional meeting” which wasn’t designed for that purpose.

Thank you to The Press for the continuing coverage of this momentous project. One of the things my husband and I love about Cd'A is the small town atmosphere. What's Behind the Stock Market Decline?
Normally, stocks rise when there are signs of better economic growth. But recently, the reaction has been the opposite. Stocks have declined because stronger growth suggests an earlier reduction in the Federal Reserve's $85 billion in monthly bond purchases. In fact, after the two-day Federal Open Market Committee policy meeting, the Fed indicated that if the economy continues to improve as expected, they will begin to reduce bond purchases later this year. In addition, they will likely end the bond purchases altogether by the middle of 2014. As a result, stocks fell and long-term interest rates rose sharply as well.

A bout of gout
If you've ever had a bout with gout, you know firsthand how painful it can be. Gout is a buildup of too much uric acid in the body. Your body naturally forms purines, that when they break down, cause blood levels of uric acid to increase. Normally, it dissolves in the blood and passes through the kidneys and out through the urine. But if it builds up, it causes urate crystals to form and accumulate in the joints, especially the large toe. These crystals tend to be sharp and can create significant pain, swelling, redness, stiffness, and heat where deposited.

RIGHTS: Don't tread on mine
Not to be out-weirded by San Francisco and Massachusetts, our City Council has chosen to trample on the rights of those who have worked hard, invested wisely and obtained rental properties. LEVY: Another chance to do right
In Benewah County, for a residence and 2.5 acres (minus the homeowners exemption), taxes paid to the Plummer/Worley Joint School District (without the taxes for the elementary school bond) comes to a grand total of $6.68. On the same residence and 2.5 acres, the taxes paid to the Benewah County Library District adds up to $23.26. Yes, the taxes for your local library are four times more than for the school.

Coeur d’Alene, Hayden, Post Falls and surrounding areas are in dire need of moderately priced stick-built housing for seniors. There is a tremendous opportunity for entities with the resources to create such communities to strike while the iron is hot. Competition is needed because the few senior communities that are already here don’t have many available properties for sale. It appears that there is property available in Hayden north of Prairie Road and I suspect other areas that I am not familiar with.

OBITS: Hat tip to the writer
Recently visited Coeur d’Alene and was incredibly impressed with your obituary writer. The obituaries are works of art. Please give my thanks and regards to the writer.

Proper spinal alignment eases back pain
If you've been to a certain kind of chiropractor recently, you've perhaps seen patients entering and leaving carrying a small bag of foam blocks. These are used to perform Pettibon fulcrum exercises. Though not right for everyone, Pettibon fulcrum exercises, when performed consistently under the guidance of a skilled practitioner, can help relieve back pain and improve your overall spinal health.

This is a republic? Maybe not
In matters of politics, passion drives more than fact. Words and labels fly publicly hither and fro, unfettered by specificities as they assail all in their wake. Yet historically, few politicians, policies, or political systems have in fact been so easily categorized to fit the molds of impassioned perception. President Reagan led one of the biggest tax hikes in history and President Obama has deported the most immigrants in one term. No man is a stereotype and every president learns that his job and society are too complex to follow a purist's path.

A challenge to those who are well off
It is an acknowledged truth that most of my fellow Americans are the most giving people on Earth. This wonderful melting pot of countless nationalities and faiths gives more to charity than most of the other countries in the free world. However, I have discovered that in the pot, one group of Americans gives about 1.3 percent of their income to charity while another gives 3.2 to 7.6 percent. If I told you one group comprised the average wage earner and the poor and the other the rich, which group would you believe gives the higher percentage?

GRADS: Honor top achievers
What a disappointment to read in the paper the announcement of graduates from Coeur d’Alene High School and not to see the names of those who were Valedictorian, Salutatorian, as well as Honor students highlighted. I am not sure I understand why recognition for those students who excelled in academics is not given. Recognition is given weekly throughout the school year for athletes with paper write ups, awards, and now we read of athletes who have signed to play at a college in their sports. Other high schools give the recognition to their seniors in the paper and CHS should too.
COLLEGE: Great value in a degree
In the last year, 99 percent of the increase in the number of people employed in the U.S. was for individuals who had attended some college, according to the New America Foundation’s analysis of the May unemployment data recently released by the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The unemployment rate for a person with a bachelor’s degree was 3.8 percent; for a person with a high school diploma but no college, it was almost double at 7.4 percent.
LETTERS: Lose the self-righteousness
I saw the letters from Hans Neumann, Ed Torrence, Ray Anderson, Paul Ciruso and Leah Madison. Of Mr. Neumann in particular, I offer this particular scripture found in Luke: Luke 23 verses 27—29. (Crucifixion scriptures) Great numbers of people followed, among them many women who mourned and lamented over him. Jesus turned to them and said, ‘Daughters of Jerusalem, do not weep for me; weep for yourselves and your children. For the days are surely coming when people will say, “Happy are the barren, the wombs that never bore a child, the breasts that never fed one.”’ Is Mr. Neumann so very certain that an opposition to abortion is in accordance with a mandate from God? Or is it only in accordance with the mandate of the church? After all, both the Old Testament (Tanakh) and the New give us scriptures in which God is prepared to condemn “unborn” life. Where does that put Mr. Neumann?

Flag Day is an important U.S. holiday
The designation of June 14 as "Flag Birthday" or "Flag Day" seems to have begun in the late 1800's with celebrations beginning in elementary schools and spreading quickly to major municipalities. It was a way to celebrate the flag and its underlying meanings. It was a way to encourage the endurance of the attitudes and values that had given rise to the ideals of freedom as real possibilities. It was also a way to honor and acknowledge the many personal sacrifices that had served to create and sustain the institutions of freedom that build on the dignity of the person rather than the attractions of power.

Get more involved in government
The editorial in Sunday's Cd'A Press (June 2, 2013) presents an excellent summary of what the community needs in our next mayor. This will be a key election and a significant event in the history of our wonderful city. There is so much on the table, so much that needs to be done to ensure the well-being of our community in the coming years. We need to spend the five months leading to the November election getting informed about the issues and the candidates.

BOISE - A battle between grocers and potato growers has been silently hitting shoppers' pocketbooks, according to a U.S. wholesaler accusing America's spud farmers of driving up prices while spying on farmers with satellites and aircraft fly-overs to enforce strict limits on how many tubers they can grow.
CDA: Vote isn't very biblical
I have spent the last few days mulling over in my mind why five out of six seemingly intelligent city council members could support an ordinance that embraces deviant sexual behavior? The following is my conclusion as to WHY.
DRIVER: Tragedy narrowly averted
Every one of us at one time in our lives has done something stupid while we have been driving. Not paying attention and running a stop sign you didn’t know was there and thanking God that there was no one in the intersection… Paying more attention to our kids than the person in front of us and almost hitting them. There are thousands of scenarios.
NRA: Condemn, don't condone
I’m sorry Mr. Souther misread my letter about the NRA. I was NOT saying the NRA was promoting any violence against those who disagree with them.
RIGHTS: They go both ways
“No man is good enough to govern another man without that other’s consent.”
EDDIE'S: Sure, we'll go away
Hooray Doug Shedler! You hit the nail on the head (My Turn column “Hospitality shut down along with Eddie’s”)! Arrow Point/Gozzer Ranch should look up the words “FRIENDLY” and “HOSPITALITY” in the dictionary.
COLLEGE: Who pays for what?
While reading the article “LCSC looks north” a question was raised at the dinner table. While it is wonderful that the colleges are becoming more available to residents of Idaho, who is funding the sites outside of Kootenai County? Are the sites in Shoshone County, Benewah County, Bonner County and Boundary County all funded by the citizens of Kootenai County or does each share in this privilege?
FLAG: Floral tribute gorgeous
First it was the moose and tulips on the hospital grounds. Lots of people taking pictures. I put one on my Facebook so friends and family could see how beautiful our city can be.
ORDINANCE: Hey, enough already
The vote is in, the ordinance passed and we should be moving on, but as evidenced by the articles and letters to the editor in the CDA Press, which in themselves prove this clarification of the constitution was so badly needed, we are going to continue to be subjected to the same redundant rants and deliberate misconceptions of what this law does.

Ignorance of history goes back further than Reagan
Mike Ruskovich's My Turn, "Reagan Legacy No Laughing Matter," drew some predictable fire. There were those who compared Obama to Stalin (totally off topic). There were those who called Mr. Ruskovich a Bolshevik. There were even those who questioned his sanity. All for two assertions: that Reagan was the recipient of a personality cult that makes Kim Jong Il look positively unappreciated, and that President Reagan's policies were more suited to the 1880s than the 1980s.

COUNCIL: Hell, here we come
Thank you City Council of Coeur d’Alene for opening the floodgates to hell by adopting a city ordinance that promotes a lifestyle to sin. With the exception of Steve Adams once again you have voted against the majority, the citizens of our beautiful city, who were against the need for the discrimination ordinance. Perhaps now we can change our title from the “Beautiful City by the Lake” to “Sin City by the Lake.” You should be ashamed of yourselves voting for the minority to promote their agenda. You have opened a can of worms. You have taken our rights from us and given special rights to a few where no major problem exists. The future you have opened for us is more crime, immorality and no protection for our children.

ORDINANCE: I'll do what is right
I am disappointed by the anti-discrimination ordinance recently passed in the city of Coeur d’Alene. Religious issues aside (yes, I am a Christian that believes homosexuality goes against the law of God), if I owned a business I should have the right to discriminate against whomever I please whether they are black, white, homosexual, skinhead, bisexual, disabled or whatever, it is my right to hire and fire at will. Is that right under God’s law? No, but it’s my right under the constitution.

When funleads to injuries
Doctor of Oriental Medicine
As summer begins, so does the excitement of getting more physically active. In many cases, we have been inactive for months, only to jump into sports or fun activities with physically dormant bodies. Injuries then put a damper on our summer excitement and schedules. What if you could shorten your healing time? What if you could strengthen your tissues, not by exercise, but by other means, and hopefully prevent injuries from occurring in the first place? You can.

Youth art classes to start Tuesday in Coeur d'Alene
Lying: The latest art form
A neighbor recently made a statement that stuck like glue to my senses. "Lying has become an art form" fits the current day we live in, in the truest sense. The distortions and definition changes of our vocabulary leave truth out of the context. It is now a very proud accomplishment to find a way to twist the facts into some idealistic belief system that someone else will naively swallow. Lying no longer causes shame but instead encourages people to manipulate others in prideful results.

Del Cameron’s letter regarding the “He’s on his knees tracking the president (sic), turning over every leaf, rock and clump of dirt that he may have touched” reminded me of the “hoards” of private investigators searching for any information that they could use to destroy the reputations of FOB, Jennifer Flowers, Paula Jones, Juanita Broaddrick and Kathleen Willey and those are just the more famous names that were reported in the press. Unfortunately for Bill, Monica Lewinsky “saved” her evidence or she too would have been trashed into oblivion.

COUNCIL: Vote was PC, wrong
Now you’ve done it! You know it was wrong but to please every voter you thought it was only politically correct so you joined the crowd. Now Coeur d’Alene can join the Washington group and be the home of the “Gays” and I have no doubt that pot smoking is next. In my church we accept gay members as sinners, that we all are. We do not accept their sin and hope to change them to be saved by God. Only political people accept their sin to get their vote. You all lost mine and I hope the rest of our town.

LAYOFFS: Tell it like it is
Kendra Carroll, the Virginia-based vice president of human resources for Transtector Systems/Smiths Power, with one year of experience with the company, can certainly spin the truth however she wants. However, the sequester is a convenient scapegoat for the new Smiths Power group, now based in Richmond, Va., which laid off 15 Hayden-based employees on Tuesday. This brings the total number of Idaho layoffs to approximately 30 in the last 15 months.

TIME OUT: It can save lives
On June 12, National Time Out Day will be practiced in hospitals and ambulatory surgery centers around the country. Taking a “time out” to confirm correct patient, correct procedure, correct surgical site and other important information before every operative and other invasive procedure is a requirement of The Joint Commission Universal Protocol. Despite the requirement, 40-60 wrong site surgeries likely occur in the U.S. each week.
NRA: Mark missed the mark
It seems Mr. Mark Komar’s tirade against the NRA (Sunday, June 2) is just another foolish attempt by the leftists to discredit the NRA (National Rifle Association). I am totally disgusted by his implication that the NRA had anything to do with or promoted and such actions. He shows a total lack of understanding of what the NRA stand for.

LAND CODE: Add up the confusion
Why is the proposed new zoning code 500 pages long while the old one is only 128 pages? Some say a “land-use code” needs to be longer than a “zoning code.” Is that like an automobile is longer than a car or bamboozle is longer than fib? No, there must be another reason. Both do the same thing — they control how owners use their land.

A gift my late father gave me was the love for fishing. Silver Valley coming on strong
No doubt attributed, in part to the huge amount of money the EPA will spend there this year, the real estate recovery has landed in Idaho's Silver Valley. After taking longer than many areas reported by the Coeur d'Alene Multiple Listing Service, the Silver Valley seems to have built a head of steam and is now chugging back into a better market with rising residential prices and an increase in their number of sales.

I am responding to Jeff Langford's May 30th article about true Christians. I am a friend of Jimmy Pappas. Thank you for your Godly advice, although the presentation seemed a little "Holier than Thou-ish." Those reading it might have been "turned off" by the typical Christian judgmentalism so often heard on the conservative-minded radio shows.

I am disappointed, and frankly disgusted, by Sheriff Wolfinger’s comments in response to the Boy Scouts of America’s recent decision to welcome openly gay boys into their ranks. MUSLIM: Where's the outrage?
I was appalled by the senseless murder of a soldier on a London street, as many were I’m sure. Then we were subjected to a murderer with blood on his hands, cleaver in hand stating “an eye for an eye and a tooth for a tooth.” If my math is anywhere near correct, he would have to kill about 99 other Muslims for every non-Muslim to achieve this objective. Which I in no way propose or would endorse.

He never missed a day. He walked laps and eventually could walk 6 miles a day. He has done all this in the last 1 1/2 years and he is 51 years old.

Is cosmetic dentistry only for the rich and famous?
Do you believe having a great looking smile can improve your appearance and enhance your social life? A recent poll done by the American Academy of Cosmetic Dentistry revealed that about 96 percent of those surveyed agreed that it can. Simple changes can make a huge difference in what your smile says about you.

Beta-Alanine/Carnosine a potent endurance booster
Carnosine aka Beta-Alanine is a potent buffer for the body. As an athlete increases their time exercising the body starts leaning more towards being acidic. Carnosine is fairly abundant in meat eaters but is really low in vegetarians or even lacto-ovo-vegetarians. The more carnosine a body has the better its ability to buffer the effects of endurance exercise. The less it has, the less ability it has.

The extraordinary pituitary
Doctor of Oriental Medicine
The pituitary gland rarely gets any consideration in conventional medicine, unless it is diseased. Yet the pituitary gland is so extraordinary, that it is considered the "Master Gland" because all the other endocrine glands are dependent upon its secretions for stimulation. The pituitary secretes a number of hormones (chemical messengers which dictate organ function). The pituitary is located in the brain and is about the size of a pea. Although the pituitary is considered the Master Gland, it is controlled by the hypothalamus. There are two lobes to the pituitary, each of which produce different hormones.

OBAMA: GOP is shooting blanks
The image projected by many in the Republican Party these days — and a number of office holders, sadly — is that of a little, little man carrying a very large magnifying glass. He’s on his hands and knees, tracking the president, turning over every leaf, rock and clump of dirt that may have been touched by the president’s shoe, keen to find anything vaguely suspicious. And when he finds it, up he jumps, waving it over his head, shouting what sounds like, “Benghazi! Benghazi!” or “IRS! IRS!”

"Braise some leeks," the chef yells as I work the front-line at a seafood restaurant. I look at my fellow line-cook and ask, "What does braise mean?" He shrugs his shoulders, puts his head down and focuses on the New York and sirloin steaks on the broiler. Feeling too stupid to ask the chef the meaning of braise and too embarrassed to fail, I place the leeks in a hot saute pan with a tablespoon of olive oil and begin to act like I know what I'm doing. My lack of knowledge is temporarily abated as the chef nods his approval.

It was not long into her childhood that she realized it was the best of time and place. Her childhood world stretched from Mt. Sentinel to Bonner Park to Paxson School and the Dairy Queen. There was much to do and many friends who would join in, especially in the nightly games of “kick the can” during those endless Montana summer twilights.

This letter was mailed to Mayor Sandi Bloem and members of the city council on Friday. It is too long for tomorrow's print edition of The Press, but we hope to publish an excerpt along with other comments on the proposed ordinance. What do you think of Mr. Perkins' letter?

Shock rout San Jose, move into second in division
SHERIFF: Can still get it right
Coeur d’Alene is moving toward a non-discrimination ordinance and I hope for speedy approval both for its symbolic value in the region and its real value in the lives of those who are the targets of discrimination. HCTFHR has long been a part of the conscience of Kootenai and this would be another step forward in their efforts but there is another job for them at the county level.
COLUMN: More to charity story
I read with interest Sholeh Patrick’s article, “Shocker? The rich donate the least.” Respectfully I disagree with Ms. Patrick’s article but that is because of the way she’s stated two assertions in one sentence — “Those who can afford to, give the least to charity.”

SHERIFF: Not a good promoter
For several years the Coeur d’Alene City Council, Chamber of Commerce and several other groups in Kootenai County have tried to convey the message to the rest of the world that Coeur d’Alene and our area is a good place to visit and do business. The message being promoted is that we are a progressive group of people who won’t tolerate groups like the KKK, Aryan Nations, or other extremist groups.
How do you get better at your job?
When I am hired to speak to a company or association, I typically talk ahead of time to six to eight people who will be in the audience to get a better sense of the group. I ask them a series of questions about creative selling, teamwork, negotiations, how they get close to their customers and so on. Then I surprise them and ask what they do to get better at their jobs.

Jamie Esler: A cool summer adventure
IN PERSON
Your future may be at stake
Many property owners have long held their wealth in large parcels of land. Often, their legacy was to divide this acreage into smaller parcels and present it in, usually, equal portions to their heirs. Sometimes these rural subdivisions occurred to help the holder in their retirement or to pay for unexpected medical bills or other catastrophic events. When you have no source of income, nor the ability to generate it through work, the sale of a small portion of land could have minimal impact on your estate while providing enough capital to get you through hard times.

SHERIFF: Gay scouts are wrong targets
Gee whiz, Sheriff Ben, which KCSO-sponsored programs are next to get the axe? The sodomy law is probably being violated all over town on a frequent basis by straight people…is there a task force picking them up?
