Library earns innovation award from Head Start
The Coeur d'Alene Public Library received the Edward Zigler Innovation Award presented by Head Start.
The award celebrates local programs which have partnered to create services for children and families.
Youth Services Supervisor Susan Thorpe and Outreach Coordinator Barbara Nolan from the Coeur d'Alene Library received the award at a luncheon recently.
Throughout the past two years, Thorpe and Nolan read to and distributed free books to more than 170 children in the local Head Start program. They visited each class once a month for a total of nine months each year, read the books, sang songs, performed finger plays and gave each child a book and a newsletter provided by Idaho Commission for Libraries.
Library staff participated in one parent meeting each year, presenting information on the importance of early literacy, and gave the parents a mini-tour of the Seagraves Children's Library to show them what the library has to offer their families.
