SCOUTS: It's not about sodomy

| June 5, 2013 9:00 PM

I am disappointed, and frankly disgusted, by Sheriff Wolfinger’s comments in response to the Boy Scouts of America’s recent decision to welcome openly gay boys into their ranks. (Coeur d’Alene Press May 25 article, “KCSO may drop Boy Scouts charter.”) The article stated that the sheriff “is compelled to drop the department’s Boy Scouts of America charter” because of this recent decision. Mr. Wolfinger is quoted as saying “It would be inappropriate for the sheriff’s office to sponsor an organization that is promoting a lifestyle that is in violation of state law.” He then went on to say that sodomy is against the law in Idaho.

Are you kidding me? Sodomy has NOTHING to do with this decision by the Boy Scouts of America. They have chosen to promote acceptance of any boy who would like to be a part of their organization. To link that positive act to sodomy is ignorant and shameful, especially coming from a leader in our community.

Next time the Kootenai County Sheriff position comes up for election, I’ll be endorsing another candidate. I cannot, in good conscience, support someone who displays such poor judgment and a lack of empathy for certain individuals in our community.

Hey Mr. Wolfinger, there was a program at the Kroc Center recently on bullying. I’m sorry you missed it. I’ll send you a personal invitation next time around.
