Idaho moves up 10 places among bike-friendly states

In honor of National Bike Month, the League of American Bicyclists has released its latest Bicycle Friendly States Ranking.

In the sixth annual assessment, Idaho achieved the No. 26 ranking nationally, up from No. 36 in 2012.

Idaho's ranking was based on several indicators, including infrastructure and funding that provide on-the-ground bicycle facilities; education and encouragement programs that promote cycling; and passage and enforcement of bicycle-friendly laws that make it safe and comfortable for people of all ages to ride.

"We are encouraged with the increase ...," said Cynthia Gibson, executive director of Idaho Pedestrian and Bicycle Alliance. "Our improved status now places us in the middle of the pack instead of trailing behind as we did last year. Many Idaho communities are in the midst of their Bike Week right now to raise awareness.

"The state bicycle plan is under way and should be finalized soon, and we are working to maximize transportation alternative dollars for biking and walking improvements. All of these changes will enhance the safety of our streets for non-motorized users."

Idaho Pedestrian and Bicycle Alliance worked with Ted Vanegas, Idaho Bicycle Pedestrian Coordinator to complete the application.

"We acted on two tips from the 2012 report card - a completed state bicycle plan and establishing a bicycle advisory committee," Vanegas said. "We will all continue to work together to enhance Idaho's bicycle network."

The rankings mark the launch of an updated and improved evaluation process. Throughout 2011, the League held Bicycle Friendly America listening sessions across the country to understand the successes and shortcomings of the program.

Based on public input, the survey was revised to give a clearer picture of a state's accomplishments and next steps toward becoming more bike-friendly.
