POLITICS: Party isn't the answer
Ignorance is not bliss! How an intelligent person can neglect to familiarize themselves with the issues prior to entering the voting booth is beyond me. The political environment of Idaho is not acceptable to the majority of us, yet we keep voting “party” because we’re spoon-fed what to think via television and radio.

Good news for owners and buyers
Last week showed signs that the economic recovery may not be as strong as hoped. One indicator is the reduction in mortgage interest rates for the second consecutive week, down to 4.14 percent from 4.17 the previous week. Mortgage rates of course, have an impact on the housing market as lower rates mean more borrowers can qualify for home loans. Lower rates also mean lower payments and for many, more home for their money.

PROBLEMS: Try love and respect
I’ve read much in the Coeur d’Alene Press about the multiple shootings in the Coeur d’Alene area recently. Along with that, I’ve read the articles related to the local ministers suggesting voting choices for the people in their congregations. Both trouble me.

I’ve always heard pickleball is a fun, social game, and one that I may be interested in after playing tennis for 40 years. So, I was glad to arrive at the new McEuen Park tennis courts last Thursday to play tennis and find a group of pickleball players on one of the courts. I’d like to ask why the local school district has chosen to fence off and lock up all the school playgrounds in town. From the Sorensen Elementary play structures to the basketball courts at Lakes Middle School, they are inaccessible to our kids during the summer — the very time when they should be out and playing, getting exercise and improving their skills. I have a question concerning the My Turn column, “Pastors on Path of Love,” by Paul Van Noy on page one of section C of The Press dated June 20, 2014. The sentence started at the bottom of page one: “This also seems to have revived the angst that surfaced over the City Council’s choice to grant special rights to the LGBT community.”

Digestive system-related diseases such as celiac/gluten intolerance (in varying degrees), Crohn's Disease, colitis, IBS, heartburn, reflux (GERD), chronic diarrhea, gastro-paresis, diverticular disease, chronic constipation, gallstones and others are really climbing. COLUMN: More on Constitution
In her My Turn column June 13, Ms. Rose does a good job of presenting the pros and cons of 501(c)(3) as it pertains to churches. However, the tax-exempt status given to churches is redundant to the basic Constitutional exemption inherent in Amendment I 1:1a. The limitations set forth in 501(c)(3) are unconstitutional, but churches subject themselves to those limitations by accepting the 501(c)(3) provisions. The wise church will have nothing to do with 501(c)(3).

Great deals at auction
Many ask and even more wonder what opportunities they may be missing to buy bargain-priced real estate at auction. The answer is, it depends. It depends on a lot of factors like; do you have cash or a lender who will authorize you to bid up to a pre-approved amount? Some auctions want to receive the entire sale amount the day of your successful bid. Others will wait a couple of days and some will allow a financing contingency period that will give you the appropriate 30-45 days to get your ducks in a row.

Ed Torrence, in his letter to the editor, seemed to suggest that I did not know the difference between the Apostle Paul speaking, and Jesus speaking. Well, wonder of wonders Ed, there is no difference. I knew it was the Apostle Paul writing this, but 2nd Tim. 3:16 tells us that all Scripture is given by the inspiration of God, and is profitable for doctrine, reproof, correction, and instruction in righteousness. In light of this and other Scriptures, Ed, it is never incorrect to say that God, or Jesus, is speaking when quoting any verse or passage of Holy Scripture.

POLITICS: Poverty divides Christians
It’s time to clear some Idaho air here on pastors and politics. What has been lauded as strict adherence to Christ and his teachings in local election cheering and jeering is really nothing more than manipulation of the masses.
POINT: Suspect a 'master plan'
Independence Point: Transformation to handicapped-accessible beachfront. Why would anyone want to park cars there?
POINT: Keep your hands off
Well, here we go again, we have a new mayor who is backpedaling on his campaign promises to maintain public access to the waterfront. Obviously his loyalty is with his old boss at the resort, who doesn’t want to view the cars and the public from his office. There is absolutely NO reason to remove the parking from that lot. For handicap, you just need to mark several spots as handicap only.

Hip impingement involves a change in the shape of the surface of the hip joint that predisposes it to damage, resulting in stiffness and pain. Hip impingement is a process that may precede hip osteoarthritis. It most often occurs in young, active people. A recent study found that 87 percent of teens and adults with hip pain showed evidence of hip impingement on diagnostic images taken of their hip joints. To treat hip impingement, our physical therapists at Pinnacle prescribe stretches and strengthening exercises to better balance the muscles around the hip to protect it, and use manual therapies to help restore range of motion and increase comfort.

Wouldst that all the area's citizens to find themselves worthy of such participatory ire, but since over 70 percent chose not to vote in the last election, Mr. Patrick feels it incumbent upon himself to fling indignation (from such said tower) down onto the surly serfs below who did make the effort to vote! Claiming, in the process, along with Mr. Morse, a possible breach of one of the most irresponsibly passed pieces of legislation, the 1954 Johnson Amendment, which is no less than IRS "hush" money gifted to churches in the original version of the "Silence of the Lambs" (and their shepherds).

One team, one dream
Business Bits
"One team, one dream" is the theme of the Crafted Tap House and Kitchen, which opened downtown this weekend at 523 E. Sherman Ave. The former auto specialty building was expanded from 2,200 square feet to about 3,000 with a large patio.
THANKS: Chivalry without a hitch
Chivalry is alive in Coeur d’Alene! A word of thanks to Brian who works at Hitches Unlimited. I was having my auto repaired, and while waiting I walked across Sherman to the little ice cream store for a cold drink. I sat there to wait for the repair to be completed. When my car was ready, Brian walked across the street, stopped traffic (at the crosswalk, I might add), gave me his arm, and helped me back to the shop.
TEACHERS: Here to enrich students
My wife, Sandy and I are retired teachers from the Chicago suburbs and moved to Coeur d’Alene in 2005. Why I became an ombudsman
I become an ombudsman, an advocate for residents of long term care, many years after my mother died in a skilled nursing facility. I said then that when I retired, I was going to do something that would make life in facilities better. I had never heard of an ombudsman.
A perspective on mortgage interest
Last week brought another moderate increase in 30-year mortgage interest rates but with the average rate still below 4.5 percent there seems to be little cause for alarm. Still, with many remembering the lowest of the low at 3.35 percent in November 2012, rates over 4 percent may seem high at 4.2. Those of us who purchased homes in the early '80s will agree that, by comparison, these rates seem ridiculously low. Even so, Americans have not always enjoyed fixed rate loans.

On June 10, some friends and I were enjoying lunch at Le Peep restaurant, celebrating a birthday, when we were advised that someone had paid for our lunches, including the tip. Whoever this charming person was said he wished to remain anonymous. As none of us is young any longer, we thought perhaps the days of chivalry had ended, but to use today’s vernacular, we loved your “paying it forward” for us. We shall certainly find an opportunity to emulate your generosity. THANK YOU kind sir.

OBAMA: Hates America, military
I certainly have to agree with Mr. Membury’s “Readers Write” letter on Wednesday, June 11. Of course the president had a smile on his face, he didn’t even flinch. Proper breathing during exercise is one of the most overlooked aspects to help you achieve the most out of your workouts. For most of us when we think of breathing, we really don't consider a right or wrong way of taking a breath. Correct breathing technique is learned and elite athletes have known this for years. So what does it mean to be incorrectly breathing during exercise? Yes, pastors (and churches) are legally allowed to distribute candidate surveys and incumbent voting records, educate members of the public about viewpoints of candidates, discuss church doctrine pertaining to candidate views, etc. There’s a whole list of these rights available from the Liberty Counsel and The American Center for Law and Justice. EDITORIAL: Church, state are inseparable
The most thunderous railing against the tyranny of King George preceding our break from England 240 years ago came from the pulpits in the 13 colonies. The Church of England was solidly in bed with the Crown. When our founders declared that church and state should be separated, they clearly meant that no government sponsored, corporate religious organization be foisted upon the people. They did not, however, desire a separation of God and state. They believed personal religion (respect for and faith in God) and politics were inseparable, as religion helped maintain a high standard of behavior, tending to keep people honest and upright.
Pensive parenting
Parenting does not happen by accident. One must think, research, study and plan to parent a child. Think; the most important act one does in his or her life - the creation of life - is possible with little thought or intention. One can create a child by simply seeking pleasure through another's company resulting in a baby - the creation of life!

Easy remedy exists for Obama's illegal move
The initial joy that erupted in Hailey and across America when President Barack Obama announced that he had secured the freedom of Sgt. Bowe Bergdahl, has been overshadowed by the controversy surrounding the illegality of the president's action. In plain terms, President Obama violated a statutory requirement integral to the prisoner swap that won the release of Bergdahl. The administration's defense on constitutional grounds, moreover, is weak and unpersuasive. Fortunately, a constitutional remedy is available.

Are your supplements working for you?
Sometimes you feel desperate about your health. You have been training hard for months and everything seemed to be going well, but suddenly for the past few days, you just feel worn out. So you rush to the health food store and buy some supplements that you read about in your current health magazine, and then you hope what you are taking is working for you. But how do you know if they are working, all these supplements you are taking? Or, for that matter, what you are eating and drinking every day?

What is a father? He is a man who makes sure that you have new school clothes when school starts, and who works to put food on the table without hesitation. He is a man who is there to encourage you to be your best and pick you up when times are tough.

CHURCH: This life not to be ignored
Your editorial was pretty blatant: “The separation of church and state is a holy delineation.” That certainly lends new perspective on what the word “holy” means. So, informing church attendees of the voting records of candidates is ominous and sliding us toward Richard Butler days. Really? Are we supposed to be warning churches away from being concerned with “current” life? Just asking.
VOTERS: Guide contained facts
In regard to the assumption that the U.S. Constitution supports separation of church and state, I suggest that if we are going to speak to the issue, we must first get our facts straight. Truth of the matter is, the Constitution is silent on the subject of separation of church and state. We have allowed attorneys, judges, and so-called constitutional scholars to deceive us by falsely interpreting the First Amendment. Some of these experts are ignorant out of laziness to study the Constitution. Others deliberately misinterpret the Constitution because they do not want us to know the truth and accept the truth. Acceptance of the truth is acceptance of God, the Creator, and they want God completely removed from politics and public life. The experts are at fault for deception. We are at fault for allowing them to deceive us because we won’t take the time to study the Constitution for ourselves.
RACISM: What's next for supremacists?

PASTORS: Shouldn't dabble in politics
Real Christians are called to be soldiers of Jesus Christ, and He alone is our Commander In Chief. What would happen to me if I were a member of this world’s armed forces, and I got up one day and told my superiors that I couldn’t be a soldier for them today because I had more important things to do? It would likely result in brig time and a dishonorable discharge from service, especially if I did it more than once.

Exercise is the best medicine for stress
This week, I would like to focus on managing stress with some great meditation and exercise options. We all live busy lives, some more than others. Everyone seems to find ways to combat the day-to-day stress of modern living, but a guaranteed stress-reliever is exercise. When you consider the many health benefits of physical activity, it is disturbing that more people do not use exercise as a way to manage their stress.

MIDTOWN: It's a solid plan
As a midtown homeowner of 16 years now, I am supporting the proposed development and here’s why: The rentals fill a need for workforce housing we have in the downtown area. The people who will live there will have expendable income as they must make a minimum amount of money and a maximum with the rent not to be above 30 percent of their income. These new neighbors could be waiters, dental hygienists, legal assistants, part-time school teachers, mechanics, accountants, etc. These new midtown residents and the added small businesses will naturally create activity financially with people moving about and doing their daily things. This is what is needed for the midtown to grow in appeal and value … people and money circulating in a core area.

Seeking an improved economy to pull U.S. out of rabbit hole
