Virginia Mudge Hodge Atwood, 94

| June 20, 2014 1:03 PM

Virginia Atwood passed away on June 17, 2014, at the Coeur d'Alene Homes Memory Care Unit.

Virginia was born on May 9, 1920, in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho, to William and Della Mudge. She had one sister, Genevieve. Virginia graduated from Coeur d'Alene High School in 1938, and married Bruce Hodge of Harrison, Idaho, in 1940. Virginia and Bruce had three sons - Donald, Larry and Delmer.

Virginia married Wilbur Atwood in Coeur d'Alene in 1954. They lived in Coeur d'Alene, moved to Boise for a few years, and then moved back to Coeur d'Alene. Virginia worked at city hall in Coeur d'Alene in the Clerk's office for several years before moving to Boise. While in Boise, she went to work for the Idaho Department of Fish & Game as a permit clerk, later transferring to Coeur d'Alene where she retired in 1985.

Virginia's retirement was anything but retiring. She was active in the Methodist Church, the local Eagles Lodge, Lake City Senior Center, and the Lake City Tappers dance team - often performing at public events. Virginia once remarked, "If you're really old or really young, people like to watch you dance."

Virginia spent much of her retired life throwing darts with her long time friend and partner, Ray Anderson. And they were quite good at it, winning several Inland Northwest dart tournaments.

Virginia was preceded in death by her son, Delmer Hodge, in 1962; and sister, Genevieve. She is survived by sons, Donald Hodge, of Spokane Valley, Wash., and Larry Hodge, of Portland, Ore., two stepchildren, 13 grandchildren, and 20 great-grandchildren.

A memorial service, followed by a reception, will be held at 11 a.m., Wednesday, June 25, at English Funeral Chapel in Coeur d'Alene, Idaho. Please sign Virginia's online memorial at www.englishfuneralchapel.com.
