WALKER-PULLING TEENS: Behavior appalling
I’m writing in response to the sad article in The Press about the terrifying incident about Beth Dagastine’s walker being pulled out of her grip and her husband Gary holding her up in the Dec. 28 edition. As a stroke survivor and senior who relies on both a cane and a walker for balance problems, I’m simple appalled by these teens’ rude, dangerous behavior.

OPEN LETTER: To the president of the United States
Mr. President: The Mexican Government is totally corrupt; from the president and his administration; to the legislature; to all law enforcement agencies and the army.
GOVERNMENT: ‘We are better than this’
The county officials are aghast that one of their own has been secretly recording them. They can’t believe that they have been betrayed in this manner. And all of this happening in the wake of the worst nightmare of officials gone wrong at the college where the behind-the-scenes puppet group is leading board members.

EDITORIAL: Dare to think of a better 2024
Critical thinking must overcome destructive emotions

Guardianship court proceedings can be very difficult on families — they are also very avoidable
If you are an adult in Idaho and become unable to make your own decisions in life due to injury, illness, or some other form of incapacity, there are generally two ways in which another person becomes the stand-in decision-maker for you.

MORE ENLIGHTENMENT: In the freezer aisle
It was with great enjoyment I read the Christmas Eve letter from Bob Holliday regarding his recent shopping experience at Costco. I have a similar story to share, although mine is from a hot July day in 2022. I was shopping for my wedding/reception for 150 people in about one week.
DIVIDED: Nation could lose ‘democratic ideals’
A serious split in our nation is reflected in all of our media forms and at all levels. The split seems to be between groups that oppose change and those who see change as a form of growth or improvement. That split is so serious that groups from each side of the issues are classifying the other side as enemies, often as enemies of the state, assuming that their position is, in fact the real, or natural historical position of the state even when that flies in the face of facts.

NORRIS: Never stole books
Someone shouted out an insult against the sheriff at the last Community Library Network board meeting. The word-warpers (those who twist words to mean things they were never intended to mean) and societal destroyers have been up to their usual tactics. They’ve loudly and publicly smeared the sheriff, saying he had stolen or had possession of stolen library books. I gave those people ample opportunity to set the record straight, but they haven’t.

Scout Executive Anthony Escobar with the Boy Scouts of America Inland Northwest Council, which owns and operates the 383-acre site, said logging is taking place to cull diseased trees for the health and safety of the forest. "Diseased trees were identified and tagged for removal," Escobar told The Press via email Thursday. OPINION: Idaho’s County Clerks are not mere clerks; let’s give them our respect
We sometimes hear Idaho’s County Clerks spoken of dismissively as mere clerks– low-level functionaries just there to carry out the orders of county commissioners. Those dismissive individuals might be surprised to learn that elected clerks are the heart and soul of most counties in the Gem State. Idaho law says they serve as clerk of the courts in their county, as well as ex officio auditor, recorder and county commission clerk.

HOLIDAY ENLIGHTENMENT: In the freezer area
Recently, to gather a few needed items I ventured into Costco; I had company. I parked where the old Black Sheep building used to reside and took the shuttle to the front door. Taking a deep breath, I looked both ways and signaled to enter into the main thoroughfare. Movement was restricted and I soon realized there were many unlicensed grocery cart drivers vying with me for the same limited space in the narrow-aisled maze. Some drivers appeared to have blinders on and moved way to quickly in the limited area. On the other hand, not knowing they were as much a hazard as the nimble folks, there were as many slow-moving operators, meandering oblivious to the hectic rush-hour traffic.

Momentum and motivation
Motivation and momentum are one dynamic duo. It's a lot easier to stay motivated than to get motivated again. The same is true for momentum. Maintaining momentum is a picnic compared with restarting it.

PETERSON: Reinstatement raises question
I’m writing to ask if there is anyone else who is concerned about the esteemed Judge Peterson getting a six-month paid vacation and being reinstated to the bench after committing no less than three offenses that any of which, by any other company or organization’s standards, would be considered a terminating offense on it’s own. It seems that we are so used to the constant barrage of news reports with police, judges and politicians getting away with fraud and/or other crimes that the every day person would be convicted of that we’ve become numb. So now the news reports go in one ear and out the other. We just go about our daily business as usual.

OPINION: Moon’s GOP dances to the tune of the Idaho Freedom Foundation
Dorothy Moon’s branch of the Republican Party is so entwined with the inaptly named Idaho Freedom Foundation (IFF) that it is hard to know who is calling the shots. Both are extremely far to the right. Both have sought to divide Idahoans by stoking fear and outrage over fake culture war issues. Neither has shown much interest in working on actual problems facing the state, such as water policy, adequate funding for pre-K through higher education, property taxes, infrastructure and important social programs. The IFF has established a strong grip over many GOP legislators since it came on the scene in 2009. The closing of the GOP primary in 2012 supercharged its efforts to populate the Legislature with extremists and control their votes.

RANKED CHOICE VOTING: Votes always go to the Democrats
If you want to become California or New York, vote for Ranked Choice Voting. James Fillmore, in his letter, conveniently left out the reason the top Democrat got more votes. The Democrat party in the Alaskan election flooded the voters with a plethora of Democrat candidates. So when the tally was taken there was an immense amount of Democrat candidate votes from those losing Democrats that went to the top Democrat. This is how the Democrat National Party controls blue states. Unless the Republican National party also sends out a plethora of candidates, the percentage of votes always goes to the Democrats. The Democrat Party have the billionaires and millionaires to fund their candidates such as George Soros and his minions. Republicans do not have the elite class funding them. They are depending on the average American like you and me for funding.

“Does Idaho honor handwritten Wills?” It is a question we hear from time to time in our office. The answer, as it so often is with legal matters, is that it depends. Idaho law recognizes handwritten wills (technically referred to as “holographic wills”) as valid if they meet some very specific requirements. Below I will discuss some of the details of those requirements and additional considerations, but let’s begin by reminding ourselves exactly what a last will and testament is for.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Ready to shovel?
Winter just wouldn’t be winter without snow! But with all that snow comes the shoveling, and with the shoveling comes a chance of injuring your back. It doesn’t matter if you only have a couple of inches to clear off or the aftermath of a blizzard, you still need to practice safe shoveling techniques. It can be hazardous and even lethal if you're not careful.
COMMISSIONERS: Limited by county government structure
I don’t honestly know who should be “blamed” for a misplaced decimal point which certainly has created as a minimum a time delay issue. Apparently several reviews by computer and human beings did not initially detect the error. Mistakes can happen. It is the responsibility of the department head of any department to review the cause and institute ways to prevent similar errors in the future. The Coeur d’Alene Press article implies more of a blame game than a fix it.

Estate planning is important for everyone — not just the wealthy
One of the most common reasons that people believe that they do not need to prepare an estate plan is because they are not wealthy. However, for most adults, it is important to have a Last Will and Testament or a Living Trust (used to avoid probate), Financial and Health Care Powers of Attorney, and Advanced Directive documents, regardless of your net worth.

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATES: An answer
In a letter printed Dec. 8, Donna Casalicchio asked, “Could someone enlighten me as to how a person can run for office (president) with so many upcoming appointments with the judicial system? I just don’t get it. Thanks for your help.” That’s a fair question. And, always being one to help a “neighbor” when I can, I’ll do my best to claim and accept the writer’s gratitude as follows.

OPINION: Sandra O’Connor was a remarkable Supreme Court Justice
Sandra Day O’Connor, who died on Dec. 1, was an accomplished jurist who demonstrated that women lawyers and judges are every bit as good as men. Although there were very few job openings for women when she graduated with honors from Stanford Law School in 1952, her remarkable example has brought about a dramatic change in the legal profession. Women have not been handed equality in the legal workplace, they have earned it. I won’t say they have achieved full equality, but there has been tremendous progress over the years. O’Connor helped to forge the way.

OPINION: Threat to democracy
Democracy is where a society is ruled by the people. It was understood by our founders that a pure democracy is an unstable form of government because as soon as the majority appreciates that they can vote for the seizure of wealth and property from the minority, revolution and chaos are only a matter of time. Our Founders’ solution was to give us a republic in which the people vote for their elected officials to represent them and then the officials pass laws to govern society.

OPINION: Idaho Kids Covered report
December brings on the holidays, such a wonderful time of year. The kids come home. They cook and play music for us. Gifts are exchanged. A tree is harvested. INVOCATIONS: Limiting religions violates First Amendment
This is in response to Paul Van Noy’s quote in the article “Answer to Prayer?” printed on Nov. 29. Van Noy stated that allowing all faith leaders a chance to lead the invocation at the beginning of Coeur d’Alene City Council meetings “makes the city vulnerable to so-called deities other than the God of the Bible.” He went on to say, “Sadly, other deities or demonic spirits may respond to the invocation” and that’s concerning to him. I find Van Noy’s comments concerning.

OPINION: Who's the boss?
During my eight years serving in the Idaho Senate, I was incredibly impressed with the respectful nature of the Senate’s legislative process. After coming from the “blood sport” politics of North Idaho back then, I was relieved to find such rational behavior among my peers in the Senate and appreciated it throughout my time representing Coeur d'Alene.

GRISSOM, THOMPSON: Good for Lakeland students and parents
Election day has come and gone and that warrants some reflection. As a mom of three in the Lakeland School District, the election of our school board trustees had my attention. What direction would voters want our community headed in? In 2019, Ramona Grissom and Michelle Thompson were elected. During their four years on the school board, these two trustees helped to re-open the schools in the fall of 2020 without face masks, worked to keep our schools focused on education and advocated for parental rights.

OPINION: Idaho voters can be trusted to responsibly exercise their initiative rights
It was a bit surprising to read an opinion piece that Representative Lance Clow (R-Twin Falls) has circulated to media outlets around the state, warning Idahoans against signing the Open Primaries Initiative. He accused the supporters of the initiative of having “ulterior motives” with the goal “to give the Idaho Democratic Party an increased opportunity.” If that is the goal, one might be left to wonder why Butch and Lori Otter, former Senator Denton Darrington, former House Speaker Bruce Newcomb, former JFAC co-chair Maxine Bell and a host of other Republicans from across the state have come together to urge approval of the initiative.
