Post Falls creating its own train nightmare
In the Nov. 23 Press story about train noise, Post Falls said its primary responsibility in considering housing projects near railroad tracks is public safety, and that “grade separations” in the form of bridges or tunnels are needed to silence train horns. The city’s logic is questionable on both counts, as I’ll explain in a moment. Spoiler alert: People living near the Union Pacific (UP) track in Post Falls face far greater threats than the mere honking of horns.

Western Medical Associates is the independent group of physicians who provide emergency medical care to patients in Kootenai Health’s emergency department. Recently, Western Medical has been negotiating new contracts with local insurance companies. Others retroactively covered care at the contracted rate and the amount billed to patients was corrected. However, at least one carrier has said it will not honor the contracted “in network” rate for care rendered to its members during the contract negotiation period.

ART: The biggest influence
Visual art these days basically falls into three categories. Either its intention is to be aesthetically pleasing, be clever or amusing in some fashion, or somehow be controversial. Impressionism, arguably the most popular form of visual art, was very controversial in its beginning. Impressionism wasn’t contrived purely for the purpose of being controversial, it was an attempt to more accurately reflect the true colors and aesthetic beauty in nature, but controversial it was.

COMP PLAN: Fine as is
As a 40-plus year resident of the county, I believe the original comp plan of 2010 was very well written and needs no changes. The fact is, developers want more freedom to fill the entire county with housing. The rate towns in the county are annexing in more and more land, it will give the developers plenty of room to build. Sholeh Patrick’s column of Nov. 21, “Art’s value includes some pain,” was quite eloquently written. A song writer’s art, the singer’s art, paintings of art all evoke feelings of some kind. VINDMAN: Uniform question answered
Why did Lieutenant Colonel Alexander Vindman wear his army dress uniform to the congressional hearing on Tuesday? Some Republicans on the committee, along with some conservative talk show hosts voiced a strong opinion that it was inappropriate for Vindman to wear his. Perhaps it was just for show — after all, he wears a suit to work every day in the White House — or perhaps to gain sympathy in the hearing room or on national television. A few of the committee members had been in the military, so could they have worn their military uniforms to the hearing?
RE-ENTRY: Address bigger issue
Listening to the fear-based arguments against a proposed prisoner re-entry center in Kootenai County, I came to this conclusion: It’s time to decriminalize mental health. Chronic pain triggers to avoid
Debilitating, chronic pain is on the increase, and if you don’t know why you are in pain, then it is difficult to know what to do or how to cope. When working with patients that have chronic pain, it is not always straightforward and can be a time consuming process to determine the main factors contributing to the issue. Take care of your prostate and it will take care of you
“Many men die with prostate cancer, but most men with the diagnosis will not die from prostate cancer.” I have heard numerous doctors and medical professionals use this line, but don’t let sayings like this diminish the importance of self-care and regular prostate checks as you age. While prostate cancer diagnoses do not typically come with a terminal prognosis (or predicted outcome), there are some types of prostate cancer that have a very high Gleason score, which is to say, they are highly aggressive. Prostate cancer is, in fact, the second leading cause of death among American men according to the American Cancer Society. The American Cancer Society also reports that 1 in 9 American men will be diagnosed with prostate cancer. Cancer aside, the significant impact on quality of life that can result from other prostate related complications, like benign prostatic hypertrophy (or an enlarged prostate, abbreviated as BPH) further highlight the value of doing everything possible to take care of your prostate and urinary system.

ELECTIONS: Good ones leaving
I was shocked to read Grace Studer’s letter stating that she was leaving the election office. I have known Grace for years, having worked the elections as a Chief Judge for 17 years. Grace was always pleasant and helpful and provided the staffing for all of the precincts, which is not an easy job. Over the past several months, she took on more and more duties as more and more of the regular staff (Kerry, Megan and Judd) left. I never heard her complain. Grace not only did the staffing, she organized and provided the supply boxes for us at the polling places. They were the best they have ever been at this last election. She also taught the poll worker classes, first with Judd and then by herself this last time. One day she was here and the next she was gone!
IMPEACHMENT: What process tells us

Thanksgiving recomendations
This past week, The Press ran a column from the Associated Press on Thanksgiving wine pairings. The column proved one theory I have written about many times: the best way to get 20 different opinions on wine is to ask 10 wine professionals. While there were some opinions in the column I couldn’t disagree with more, like “turkey is bland,” not sure where this wine professional has been having Thanksgiving dinner, but he needs to try someplace new. Turkey may be many things at our gatherings but “bland” is never one of them. We can leave this and other arguments for another time.

OPINION: New coverage options give Idahoans access to health insurance
There are new health coverage options in Idaho. The rules for Medicaid have changed and more Idahoans can now have access to health insurance. Even if you’ve tried in the past, now you may qualify for Medicaid – it’s time to try again. If you are a single adult earning below $1437 monthly, you may qualify and income eligibility will vary with household size. Enrollment is open now with coverage going into effect on January 1, 2020.

A huge thank you to our mayor for saying NO to that piece of disgusting so called “art” displayed in Riverstone. A swastika or any other Nazi emblem should never be put on display in Coeur d’Alene or anywhere in the USA. It is a piece of history but not one to be honored in any manner.

More to porcupines than quills
A walking pin-cushion. That’s usually what comes to mind when people think about porcupines. Even the word porcupine means “quill pig.” But there is so much more to learn about porcupines than their quills; their behavior and natural history is just as fascinating. For example, did you know that there are two main types of porcupines: old world porcupines, which are found throughout Africa, Europe and Asia, and new world porcupines, which live in both North and South America. Despite both being porcupines, they are unrelated to each other.

ART: Discussion? Nope
Marker #11 a hammer and sickle. It’s generally universally accepted as a symbol of communism. Communism is a totalitarian state in which a single authoritarian party eliminates private property ownership. Stalin was one of the most well known communist leaders under who, millions were without mercy killed. We know that communism denies the existence of God and actively removes it from every part of society. How many of our service men and women have died in defense of those that suffered under communist governments?
ART: A view on removal
The symbol depicted on Marker #11 is the hammer and sickle, established in 1924 as the symbol of the Russian Communist Party. It represented Soviet power that reigned In Russia from 1917 to 1991. It was a murderous, totalitarian regime responsible for the torture, starvation, persecution, the gulag and the deaths of over a 100 million people who did not accept, comply and subjugate themselves to communist orthodoxy.

The wheels of the impeachment inquiry fiasco have barely left ground and already Hagadone’s liberal leftist paper has our president convicted (see page A3, Nov. 13) article by Jim Jones and Associated Press. Two major notes I will make: first Jim Jones’ hatred and disdain for our president gives him pause to think that the Senate trial will not be nonpartisan, however he has no concern with the Witch Hunt which has lasted for three years which has been 100% partisan and is seeking to remove a duly elected president by the American people. He, Jones, claims to preach to us what impeachment is and is not. His ignorance is based solely in his hatred for our president and his hopes for a successful impeachment of the president, which he knows will be dead on arrival on the Senate floor.

By big we are trying to spur your memory to changes that really have two factors: the changes are abrupt and they are significant enough to where you notice the results are not to your liking.

Whiplash and radiculopathy
We all know someone who has been in a car accident and diagnosed with a cervical sprain or strain injury also referred to as whiplash. It can often have serious consequences depending on the severity of the impact. Whiplash is one of the most devastating injuries you can have to your cervical spine. There is rapid acceleration followed by a rapid deceleration movement that is powerful enough to tear muscles and ligaments, bruise soft tissue, and even herniate cervical discs. The worst part about it is the fact that this condition is often overlooked, and many symptoms do not begin to appear until hours, days or even weeks after the accident.

While both can feel uncomfortable pressure in the abdomen, water retention involves excess fluid accumulation which resolves when taking diuretics. But likely, your bloating may be the result of either faulty digestion or dietary choices. Let’s review both:

Despite what the talking heads and others may say, an impeachment is not a garden variety criminal trial. The Bill of Rights in the U.S. Constitution does not apply to an impeachment proceeding. TRANSIT: Calling for compromise
Regarding the new transit center — my memory may be a little hazy but it seems to me that the plans for the center as published did not include an enclosed area for the public or bathroom facilities for them. It was to be offices for Citylink employees.
Transit center decisions are not a surprise
Interesting article for any Sunday Morning quarterbacks when the discussion had continued for about a year. The Cd’A Press covered numerous meetings (see below) and published letters. The finished product actually conforms to those discussions.

TRIBES: Celebrating in obscurity
I would like to thank the Coeur d’Alene Tribe for their Nov. 2 panel discussion which included five regional tribes. These five included the Kalispell Peoples, the Colville Confederation of Tribes, the Spokane Tribe, Nez Perce and Coeur d’Alene Tribe. The one disappointment was the low turnout by both native and non-native area residents.

ATTACK: Shallow words fall short
As I read CR Becker’s (Nov. 3) attack on Barb Crumpacker, I wondered if she deserves to be put in her place and does CR have the right to do so. He (I assume a he) confirms that Trump is a rotten president, but his rotten deeds should be kept secret. One must laugh as he shames Barbara for watching NBC and being exposed to the truth.

Air stagnation alert means red flags for Cd'A's vulnerable
The National Weather Service office in Spokane issued an air stagnation advisory Thursday across the Idaho Panhandle, closing the lid on wood stoves and warning vulnerable residents of potentially dangerous health risks.
RESPONSE: Take the high road
I would encourage folks to read books, as I have done, authored by those in both political parties, and folks inside and outside the current administration, before making a decision about who to vote for in 2020.
NIC's 'inclusion' policy excludes common sense
The Children’s Center at North Idaho College will no longer celebrate calendar holidays, including the recently canceled Halloween parade.

When should I drink this wine?
It is one of the most common questions we get from customers and readers alike. It comes in a number of forms, “When should I drink this wine?” “How long should I/can I age this wine?,” or “I have this wine in my collection from ‘X’ year is it still good?” The answer to each of them is typically, “Its hard to say.” The reason it is hard to answer the question may surprise you but it simply comes down to a very personal decision based on each wine consumer’s palate. You should drink it when you open the bottle and have the sense that this is really delicious wine and you love the taste.
