Utilities: Fire prevention requires close attention to conditions
The interaction of electrical lines and the landscape around them, especially trees, often ends badly; it can cause power outages any time of year, but in the summer in particular, it can cause fires. Keeping fires from happening requires close attention to power lines and the areas around them, and that’s not just a summer job.

"He’s made all these oral histories available for free online, so I was able to go through hundreds of them."

NIC: Fraud continues
Any doubt about the malfeasance of the KCRCC anointed NIC Board Majority was erased at the last meeting. Despite plain-as-day evidence, Boyles was chosen over the clearly more qualified Stevens Clay. Boyle’s incomplete and hostile responses to the RFP questions should have disqualified him. His main qualification appears to be his association with Greg McKenzie and the KCRCC. One has to wonder how much Greg South, Art Macomber and Boyles are funneling back into the KCRCC war chest?
NIC: Accreditation will be in jeopardy again
I read in The Press today that the three NIC Board Bozos have now hired Colton Boyles as general legal counsel, and retained Art Macomber for special projects. Their reasoning must be that general incompetence is all that is normally required, while special projects require special incompetence. I predict that we will soon be heading over the “accreditation cliff” once again.

Daughter, dad with Parkinson's enjoy reptile adventure
One More Time Northwest coordinates special trip for PF family
Many fathers share special, unbreakable bonds with their daughters. Sometimes, those bonds include hobbies and pastimes only they understand, like Dennis and Aylis Manley's love of snakes and other reptiles. "We started watching Snake Discovery on YouTube about five years ago," Dennis Manley, of Post Falls, told The Press via email Friday. "The show is very educational and we both fell in love with the snakes." They adopted a corn snake, named Hot Tamale, because corn snakes are known for their mild temperaments. “I really like them because people associate snakes with fear, but they're actually really fun creatures to have," Aylis said during a phone call. "They're really interesting because of their anatomy." The daddy-daughter duo are making the most of their time together. Dennis, 59, was diagnosed with Parkinson's disease in 2009, before Aylis was born. He was diagnosed with throat cancer one month later.

If your estate planning documents were created outside Idaho, it is time for a review
People regularly move to Idaho from other states and bring with them wills, trusts, and power of attorney documents created in their prior state. Such people often ask me if their old estate planning documents are enforceable in Idaho. Generally, those documents are still valid in Idaho. However, there are some very important reasons to have estate planning documents from another state reviewed by an Idaho estate planning attorney. Let’s remind ourselves what each of these documents are and then consider some of the issues that create concern about out-of-state wills, trusts, and other estate planning documents.

West Bonner forensic audit delayed, nonprofit filing draws concern
Initial results from a forensic audit of the West Bonner County School District have been postponed as the auditing firm waits for additional documentation. To prepare the preliminary report, Waldren said the firm needed all data for the audit period of 2018 to 2023 by Aug. 1. However, as of Aug. 25 — the date Eide Bailly planned to deliver the report — some of the data needed had yet to be given to the firm. Also, a Secretary of State filing listing the district as a non-profit has raised concern that some on the WBCSD board are attempting to convert at least part of the district into a charter school. District officials said that is not the case and is merely an effort to move the audit forward.
NIC: Christian nationalism behind trustees’ agenda
OMG the majority of the NIC BOT has done it again. They have hired the legal counsel candidate who was least qualified and who was even unwilling to complete the application process. It should be obvious to all who witnessed the show that they were not interested in hiring the most qualified candidate, and someone should have asked them why.

Spinal Decompression is a non-surgical, non-narcotic answer for disc-related problems of the neck and low back. Many people across the country and around the world have found relief from the pain associated with herniated discs, bulging discs, facet syndrome, degenerative joint disease, pinched nerves, and other spinal afflictions through the use of Decompression Therapy. Unlike fixed traction, Spinal Decompression offers a cyclic stretching and relaxation action to help prevent muscle spasms. This action allows damaged discs to reposition themselves back to their normal position. Spinal Disc Decompression Therapy uses a computer-aided modality to apply a gentle, non-surgical decompressive force to a targeted disc, thus helping to relieve the symptoms that cause pain and dysfunction.

HUCKLEBERRIES: Origin of huckleberry ice cream
North Idahoans love all things huckleberry. Huckleberry pancakes. Huckleberry muffins. Huckleberry syrup and jams. Huckleberry shakes from Paul Bunyan. And the huckleberry ice cream cones at the North Idaho Fair. So we should cherish the memory of Myron Haugen, the local who made our first commercial huckleberry ice cream.

MY TURN: Stemming global warming begins at home
Aug. 14 was an historic day. Amid local scorching heat, nearby wildfires and smoke, 16 young people in Montana prevailed in the first ever climate trial. They showed that their constitutional rights to a “clean and healthful environment,” enshrined in the state’s constitution, had been violated by Montana’s burning of fossil fuels. Droughts have worsened, rivers run dry, others flood, and wildfires increased in size, severity and frequency. Wildfire smoke forced the children to stay indoors, causing episodes of depression, anxiety and worsening asthma.

CONSTITUTION: Time to stand and defend it
You either support the Constitution and our country’s laws, or you don’t. Somehow Trump and his MAGA crew have decided that following the facts and enforcing our laws is “weaponizing” the F.B.I. and the justice department. They have determined that if they don’t win in a free and fair election that it is OK to subvert the Constitution, conduct an illegal scheme to overthrow the duly elected president, and disregard the votes of millions of people.

OPINION: Main Street Idaho, a breath of fresh air
Last night I sat down to dinner with state Sen. Treg Bernt from District 21. Treg is a fourth-generation Idahoan and a graduate of Idaho State University. Housing: Spokane is doing a wonderful job of repurposing buildings from commercial to residential. The Ridpath hotel was repurposed into apartments. Also, some cities are allowing ‘mother-in-law’ houses to be built next to existing houses. And, $350,000 is not affordable to 80% of us nor is $1,000 rent. Why can’t we designate areas for tiny homes? Many retirees would love to downsize to a tiny house. Large companies may have to provide housing for their workers like Potlatch did at Headquarters. Some cities have had controlled rent for decades. We are going to see people on fixed incomes forced into homelessness. Outrageous rents and home prices are now nationwide.

MY TURN: Response to Regan
Response to Brent Regan’s Opinion, Friday, Aug. 11: America’s strength is tied directly to its equity and diversity. Equality of opportunity does not exist without equity. If you doubt this, consider the struggle that women continue to have had for equity in this county. A people cannot easily be unified toward a singular goal when great disparities exist — sex, education, income, ethnicities, race, societal and social standing, creed, et al. Recognizing and celebrating our differences makes all Americans stronger, not fractured groups as Mr. Regan would lead us to believe.

OPINION: What the 2022 Alaska elections can tell us about ranked-choice voting
The Dorothy Moon faction of the Republican Party has enlisted Sarah Palin to speak in Idaho Falls on August 19 about the supposed evils of ranked-choice voting. Palin’s 2022 loss of her statewide race for Congress should provide a ray of hope to the vast number of reasonable, pragmatic Idaho Republicans who feel they have been pushed out of their party by Moon’s narrow, super-committed extremist branch of the GOP. Palin did not lose because of ranked-choice. Rather, she simply fell out of favor with Alaska voters.

Can you amend your estate plan by writing the changes on your existing documents?
Wills and trusts are typically changed over time as life circumstances, the state where you reside, or your desired outcomes change. It is actually the rare case where a person puts their estate plan together once and never changes it after that. What is important to understand however, is how to effectively and legally change your will or trust so that the changes are enforced per your wishes.

For Republican eyes only: Trump’s political posture — the bane of many conservatives — is the role of a spoiler, a spoiler needed for this particular time in American history. MY TURN: How low-income families survive
Understanding the challenges faced by low income families
Low income families in the Pacific Northwest face a number of challenges that significantly impact their daily lives and overall well-being. From financial struggles to limited access to resources, these families often find themselves trapped in a cycle of poverty. Low income families are an increasingly significant portion of our society, struggling to make ends meet and provide for their loved ones. This takes a toll on family dynamics, creating added stress and strain. Parents may feel guilty for not being able to provide the quality of life they desire for their children, and this causes anxiety and a sense of failure. If that isn't enough, the constant struggle to meet basic needs leaves little time or energy for other aspects of family life.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — How to naturally treat eczema and psoriasis
Eczema, or atopic dermatitis, is a red, itchy rash that affects up to 30 million Americans, many of whom are children. Ranging in severity from mild, slightly itchy dry patches in small, isolated areas, to angry, inflamed rashes covering large portions of the body, eczema can make a person anywhere from annoyed to miserable. People with eczema also frequently suffer from asthma and allergies, and although conventional medicine considers eczema to have “no known cause,” there is growing evidence that it is an autoimmune condition.

Ensuring guardianship court proceedings are not in your family’s future requires good planning today
If you are an adult in Idaho and become unable to make your own decisions in life due to injury, illness, or some other form of incapacity, there are generally two ways in which another person becomes the stand-in decision maker for you. The first way is through the use of a previously written and signed Power of Attorney Document in which you will have stated who it is that should make your decisions for you if you cannot do so. That stand-in decision maker is called your “Agent” or your “Attorney in Fact.” However, if you have not previously completed valid Power of Attorney documents, a judge will need to appoint someone to become your decision maker through a court process known as Guardianship and Conservatorship. If a judge has to appoint your stand-in decision maker, that person will be called your “guardian” and/or “conservator.”

In regard to Bill Buley’s article, “Tough times for Tesh,” the article concludes incorrectly with the assumption that pay was the reason for the mass walk-out of Tesh in the past few weeks. Eldest child, best friend, C.P.A. — Who should you put in charge of your estate?
When I meet with clients to set up estate plans, I find that a surprising number of people mistakenly believe that they must name their eldest child in their will or their trust as the person in charge of their estate. Even those who understand that they are not legally required to do this may think they are supposed to nominate their eldest child for this duty. There may have been a time when social norms dictated this outcome, but those days are long past, and today I speak to my clients in detail about who the right type of person is to be left in charge of their estate. Let’s review some of the factors that should be considered.

OPINION: Prescribed burns on federal lands would mitigate extreme fire seasons
As a former wildland firefighter for four years (2008-11), peak fire season would migrate north in late summer, to our district in Eastern Oregon, but the critical practice of prescribed burning was infrequently used in our region. Twelve years later, the fire seasons still migrate north, and millions of acres continue to be destroyed annually by extreme fires because our region largely avoids prescribed burning.

On Thursday, July 27, about 10:45 a.m., my husband, myself and our 4-year-old son were riding bikes on the trail around Riverstone Park. We turned down a hill (we hadn’t been in that area in quite a while and I wasn’t expecting it to be so steep) and our son got around us before we could catch him and sped on down, panicked, didn’t brake, and it was the scariest moment of our lives. There was nothing my husband and I could do to stop him at that point. It was a gut-wrenching helpless feeling knowing he was about to be hurt real bad and that we had failed to protect him. He had a helmet on but it would have only saved his head. It would have been bad.

HOUSING: Zoning system is adding to crisis
Kootenai County is in need of a significant increase in housing units to meet the current demand. Less than 20 percent of local households can afford to buy a home, and the majority of home sales come from nonresidents. According to a study by the Idaho Asset Building Network, since 1990, the state has gained 56,000 low to modest income households but only added 7,000 affordable housing units. This study also stated Idaho has a current deficit of 22,000 affordable housing units.
LIBRARY NETWORK: Don’t impose religious beliefs on others
Keep your religion out of our libraries, please. If you don’t want to utilize the library on Sunday because of your religious beliefs, that is fine. However, as an elected trustee, you do not have the right to impose your personal beliefs on the users of the Community Library Network system.
EDITORIAL: This is why you can't define a library
Public libraries are much, much more than books and programs.
OPINION: Why we fight
What a beautiful place we live in! From our stunning lakes, parks and rivers, to our local events and farmer’s markets, and the exceptional teachers at our own community college — Kootenai County is a great place to live.

LIBRARY NETWORK: What about other Sunday businesses?
If members of the Kootenai County Republican Central Committee (looking at you, Board Chair Rachelle Ottosen) feel we should close the libraries on Sundays to “honor the Sabbath” and “not dishonor God,” perhaps we should also close all grocery stores, gas stations, warehouse retailers, restaurants, etc.

ADVERTISING: Advertorial — A new appellation
We learned just recently that there is a new appellation under consideration in Western Sonoma County, and that our friend and former employer John Balletto is one of those working to establish and formalize the growing area. John has farmed wine grapes in this and other areas of the Russian River Valley for decades. The creation of a new appellation or American Viticulture Area (AVA), in any of the wine growing regions of the U.S. is not remarkable. It happens fairly frequently. It is a long process with many agencies needed to approve of the change that are also involved in the setting of the boundaries and defining what makes each appellation unique.
REZONE: In best interest of the Tribe

Is estate planning different for women?
Let’s start by acknowledging that estate planning is incredibly important for every adult person in America. No matter what level of wealth, or lack thereof, and no matter what your gender, marital status, or age, if you are an American over the age of 18, you should have at least basic estate planning in place. By “basic estate planning” I simply mean the collection of documents that establish what will happen to you, your family, and the things you own if you become unable to make your own decisions (“incapacitated”) or upon your death.

OPINION: An unwelcome primer on Idaho’s one-subject rule for legislative measures
Believe me, the last thing I want to do is drive readers to distraction by delving into an obscure and frequently ignored provision of Idaho’s Constitution. Article 3, section 16 of that revered document says that every legislative act “shall embrace but one subject and matters properly connected therewith.” The one-subject rule also applies to initiatives proposed by the people. It means you can’t combine two or more separate subjects into the same proposal. For example, it would clearly violate the one-subject rule for a bill to set both speed limits and property tax rules.

OPINION: Do you identify as a Republican?
If you identify as a Republican, are you aware that the authoritarian faction of the local and state Republican Party has created great instability in our government institutions through this group’s obsession with power? Authoritarian leadership makes for a dysfunctional organization as proven by board majority decisions lately at North Idaho College, the Community Library Network and the newly elected Idaho Republican Party leaders.
