PREP GOLF: Nipp medalist as Viking boys win Lewiston Invitational at state tourney course

| August 23, 2023 1:15 AM

LEWISTON — Repetition matters.

Even more so when it could be a preview of things to come.

Coeur d’Alene senior Trey Nipp earned medalist honors, shooting a 1-under-par 71 at the Lewiston Invitational at Lewiston Country Club on Tuesday, the site of the state 5A tournament in early October.

Nipp tied with Lake City senior Max Hosfeld, but won a closest to the pin tiebreaker, with Nipp landing 12 feet from the hole, compared to 15 feet for Hosfeld.

“Our varsity kids have all been playing really consistent golf,” said Coeur d’Alene boys coach Chase Bennett, whose team won the tournament with a 299, 18 strokes better than Rocky Mountain of Meridian. “There’s still room for improvement, and the guys know that. But it was good to know that they’re competitive enough to win and there’s still more to improve on.”

Coeur d’Alene’s girls, paced by Chloe Orear’s 86, were second to Rocky Mountain, which has claimed the previous three 5A titles.

“It was a really awesome result for us,” Coeur d’Alene girls coach Jeff Lake said. “It was nice to see our No. 5 kid step up and shoot the low round for us.”

Area schools return to action at the Lake City Invitational on Monday at the Coeur d’Alene Golf Club.
