Her roots begin in New York City
It is past time for Alice Arambarri and her group to show their family tree. Alice is writing in the Cd’A Press as the “Group Leader Moms Demand Action for Gun Sense in America.” It is not her fault, but Group Leader makes me think of all the ranks in Nazi Germany that include some version of “SS Gruppenfuhrer.” Considering the goals of her group, her title might be more descriptive if it started off with Comrade Leader. She states that the organization is “anti-gun violence, not-anti-gun.

Gun rights are as sacred in this country as free thought and free speech. I currently live in a home on Foster Avenue that has been in the family since the 1950s and sits directly behind the Romer building (627 Government Way) that is being scheduled for demolition. In the article, “At least 13 people arrested at Portland, Ore., protest,” Gillian Flaccus, the AP writer, referenced President Trump’s statement that “…major consideration is being given to naming ANTIFA an ORGANIZATION of TERROR.” Flaccus then stated, “But it wasn’t clear what he meant by that as there’s no mechanism for the United States government to declare a domestic organization a terror group.”

NIC: Quality at the heart
This is in regard to the recent sanctions against the North Idaho College men’s basketball program. NIC does not get quality players as a result of housing conditions. Basketball players join the NIC program because the coaches are effective in teaching them ways they can improve their game. Corey Symons and George Swanson establish a “family” condition within their teams. The players respect and work to help each other.

TESTS: Scores not good enough
Aug. 20 article “Cd’A scores second in Idaho skills test” makes me wonder what standards the Idaho Reading Indicator use. Sounds like the bar set is far too low considering that in Coeur d’Alene only 61.6% of students ranked proficient in English, only 50.3% scored proficient in Math and only 58.9% scored proficient in Science. You’d think these scores would be embarrassing. What is this saying for our Gem State of Idaho? Not so Gem, right? I wonder if the influx of people moving here are aware of these facts.

Idaho to Working People: Drop Dead
While collecting signatures for FairWageID.org to #RaisetheWageID to $12/hr over 3 ½ years, I have received many responses that all include some allusion to the virtues of the gloriously omnipotent Free Market. Their illogic goes “Workers must receive poverty wages, because if they’re paid enough to survive, it’ll undermine the free market and all h*ll will break loose!”
From Owning Humans to Renting Humans to Actual Human Liberation
It seems that the right of all workers to be equally and indiscriminately exploited is the end-all-be-all for the liberal ‘left.’ Indeed, the hallmark of bourgeois social movements for the last 70 years has been the struggle against discrimination (and for equal exploitation) at the workplace and in society at large. This remains the political horizon and the limit of bourgeois liberal political imagination and necessarily leads to an agender, color-blind neoliberal approach to securing labor. The dominant narrative on the right remains “If they (or you) would just try harder, be more resilient, then…” while on the left it remains “Oppressed people have a longer race to run so they have to try even harder, be even more resilient!” Both offer impeccable logic. Try harder = do better. Oppression = less opportunity. Both fall short of a systematic analysis of labor under capital.

SANCTIONS: Assessing the blame
I’ve read with interest the recent articles regarding the North Idaho College Athletic Department’s alleged violations and the sanctions announced by the NWAC. I say “alleged” because it appears that the “investigation” isn’t without bias.
Maintaining the work-life balance
Two friends were talking about their aspirations. Both had spent several years at the same company, enjoyed the work and the culture, and made advancements in their careers.
Gordon, Cougar offense heat up
PULLMAN — The Washington State offense combined for eight passing touchdowns while the defense tallied five sacks and two takeaways in the Cougars’ second scrimmage of the fall Saturday afternoon at Martin Stadium.
NIC: President's game plan
The treatment North Idaho College athletics has received from our conference leadership for league violations is unquestionably excessive. Anyone interested in following the process, from the initial notice of the investigation to our appeal and the issuance of sanctions, may do so — all relevant source documents are on our website for public view (www.nic.edu/nwacresults). You will find in our appeal, that NIC vigorously fought the incredibly disproportionate penalties for the violations committed. We logically and systematically made the case that our students should not become victims of rule violations in which they had no part.
MUSEUM: Local treasure threatened
In less than 45 days another historic Coeur d’Alene home will be plowed down in favor of new, trendy townhouses. Of course I’m referring to the White House, that grand old home at Eighth and Sherman. Post Falls: Its vision is blurred
Recent comments by the Post Falls Community Development director, published in the July 31 Press, reveal much of what’s wrong with the leadership of this city. He said the hope is to purchase the Idaho Veneer and Plummer Forest Products properties “when the railroad no longer needs them.” That’s like saying UPS or FedEx will cancel their service in Post Falls when they “no longer need” the thousands of people here who rely on those companies to ship and deliver their parcels. True, BNSF would no longer be in Post Falls were it not for those two mills, but those mills need the railroad, not the other way around.

Summer fun smacked by surgeries, fractures
We live where people like to vacation. That can be a huge advantage major when life happens and sours summertime plans.
Summer food safety
As we gear up for barbeque season, outdoor birthday parties, weddings, potlucks, and picnics, it is important to remember food safety. Food safety is something many may think is boring, overrated, blown out of proportion, or unnecessary. However, foodborne illness (often referred to as food poisoning) causes 48 million illnesses in the U.S. and 3,000 deaths. Especially at risk are the very young, elderly, pregnant women and their unborn babies, and people with weakened immune systems.
Staying healthy during 'smoke season'
In recent years, the second half of summer in the Inland Northwest has become a fifth season - Smoke Season. When wildfires occur across the region, the smoke can result in dangerous air quality issues. Live Well asked Dr. Todd Hoopman, MD, who specializes in pulmonary and critical care with North Idaho Lung, Asthma and Critical Care, to talk wildfire season health issues.
Take a Break from Screen Time this Summer
We hear about it all the time now – kids and adults alike spend too much time in front of a screen. Whether it’s for social media or games, movies or TV shows, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) cites children now average 7-and-a-half hours in front of a screen each day for entertainment. That’s 114 days each year.
Time to ask - 'Where are you?'
It’s a little easier than we may think to be coasting through life and suddenly come to the realization that we are not aware of where we are. I don’t mean physically, our location; I am referring to the state we can find ourselves in after a season of hardship or difficulty. Pain has a way of numbing us to what is happening around us, or even where we are in relation to our surroundings.

OPINION: Populism on the rise in U.S.
In their recent book, “National Populism—The Revolt Against Liberal Democracy,” British authors Roger Eatwell and Matthew Goodwin chronicle the rise of populism throughout the world. They use it to explain the divide which led to Brexit and Mr. Trump’s 2016 election, among others, signaling also the disgust that many voters, mainly those without college degrees or high incomes, have with office-holders in general. The public and the text assert that populism will be with us for a long time.
War weapons do not belong on America's streets
During my service in Vietnam, I had the opportunity to witness the use of a variety of weapons that were specifically designed to kill or maim as many people as possible in the shortest amount of time. For a socialized profit motive
Whenever there is any move by our government to allocate funds for any service (other than the military, giant corporations, or the banks that perennially wreck the economy) there is a great hullabaloo usually from the right about how we are undermining the profit motive, which any good student of neoliberal stoogery knows to be the sole motivating force for human existence (other than, maybe survival).
Raising Idaho's minimum wage is only the beginning. Next, bail out the workers!
Many people I’ve spoken with lately have been understandably peeved (“pissed” may be a more apt description) at the government’s “theft” of their wages. However, for all the anger with which I deeply empathize, I have yet to meet a conservative (or liberal) who can explain why the government takes our money beyond a “we need it” or “they say we need it” dogma.

Motor vehicle accidents: When should I get evaluated for injuries?
The answer is immediately following the accident, even if you don’t have any pain. The reason for this is that many individuals do not display symptoms for days, weeks or even months after the incident. It is important to have a thorough evaluation by a qualified physician, either your family physician or a chiropractor, to determine if you sustained any injuries or complicating factors of previous health concerns. Some family physicians may even make a recommendation for physical therapy or chiropractic care. In many instances, it will be recommended that you have X-rays or advanced imaging of the spine, head or extremities (shoulder, knee, hand, etc.) to rule out structural changes or damage caused by the impact. Symptoms can vary from very subtle to severe and you never want to ignore any changes in your overall health. It is critical to report any changes in vision, headaches, ringing in the ears or changes in memory or focus, which can be indicative of a concussion.

Save your health and your savings account: Get ahead of your symptoms
The exorbitant health care costs of our nation are no secret. According to the Center for Disease Control, average health care expenditures per-person were $10,000 on average in 2015, amounting to $3.2 trillion or almost 18% of the United States GDP. Also according to the CDC, chronic diseases that are avoidable through preventive care account for about 75% of US health care expenditures. Without diagnostics like blood work or other medical testing, symptoms are the first warning signs of the deeper imbalances that lead to health problems. Unfortunately, by the time you first begin experiencing symptoms, you have likely been in a state of dysfunction for quite some time. One of the biggest challenges in health care right now is convincing individuals of the benefits of preventive care and the importance of addressing their symptoms as soon as they arise.

GUNS: The enemy is mental illness
By what sophistry of reason do gun control advocates argue that the mental illness of a few should eliminate fundamental freedoms for all? By their argument, no one should ever be treated as an adult. Instead, infantilized residents would endure a perpetual adolescence, guided and cared for by their betters; a self-selected elite of social engineers.

Recommendation columns are always a bit tricky. Write them too often, and customers lose interest. Write them too much from our own perspective, and we risk losing part of our audience. After all, tastes in wine are more varied than wine regions and varietals. If we don’t write them often enough, we hear about that too, as our readers want to know what is new in all things wine, including what we like. Over the next 4 weeks, we are going to take a bit of a different approach to recommending wines. Each week we will focus on the most requested varietals and what our customers like the best. We will start this week with Chardonnay, followed by Sauvignon Blanc, Cabernet and Pinot Noir.

Historic home worth preserving, celebrating
It’s been 106 years since the home of J.C. White made news in the Coeur d’Alene Press. Back then it was for the grandeur of the structure and the stature of the owner. Now in 2019 the beautiful house that’s stood on the corner of Eighth Street and Sherman Avenue for more than a century is at the center of a most wonderful community effort. If the planets align and the coffers fill up, the historic house will soon be moved a few blocks south and transformed into the centerpiece of a new home for the Museum of North Idaho.

SHOOTINGS: A fact about guns
This is in rebuttal to the piece that was written by Alice Arambarri in the Aug. 7 press letters to the editor. You do realize that none of the guns used in any of the real mass shootings was purchased at a gun show or through a private party. All of these firearms were purchased legally from a licensed gun dealer and went through a check in the FBI NICS database prior the purchase. Universal background checks would not have made any difference in these cases.

This letter is in response to the front-page article of the Coeur d’Alene Press article on Aug. 4 by reporter Craig Northrup. Don't let legislators circumvent initiatives
Initiatives give ordinary people a voice in determining the laws they must live by. Initiatives enable citizens to bypass their state legislature by placing proposed statutes directly on the ballot, especially if, year after year, legislators FAIL to do their jobs. Citizen-led initiatives give a voice to the people who, year after year, have had their efforts stymied, their needs ignored, and their ideas devalued.

SOUZA: The champion is MIA
Where has Mary Souza — CHAMPION OF THE PEOPLE — gone? Remember during the McEuen Park debate that she was adamant that the city hold an advisory vote so that Council would know what the people wanted? Now, Mary is our senator and the people gave her an advisory vote when they passed the Medicaid expansion initiative with a 61% majority. Senator Souza didn’t like the advice. Now she wants to make the initiative process so difficult that the people would probably never be able to bring an initiative to the ballot and vote again. She doesn’t want our advice. (I call the initiative “advisory” because the Legislature can amend and even repeal an initiative at will.)

INITIATIVE: The motive was clear
The least answered question at Tuesday’s Ballot Initiative forum presented by Reclaim Idaho was what motivated the introduction of Senate Bill 1159, which limits the people’s right to the initiative process? The answer is simple: The bill was introduced to punish the people for passing Proposition 2. Anyone who tells you otherwise is full of crap.

Cd'A Press, you're bigots on parade
Calling out Craig Northrup for this “article” of July 28, 2019, Racism on Parade? As a staff writer, Craig represents the Cd’A Press and fell down (hard) from his normally capable attempts at journalism. I have seen opinion pieces with more accuracy and truth, yet his made the front page. I would be laughing right now at how poorly the article was written if it didn’t deal with such serious matters.
OPINIONS: Don't need to be nasty
Reading the Opinion page of the paper like I do every time it’s published — my first response was not good. We need to keep “hate” out of our responses and just focus on the positive side of our lives. I know it’s small in some people’s lives, but if we focus on the good stuff in our lives and pray for the bad stuff, our attitudes will get better. Try it. No — do it because it works.
