No hurricanes yet in the Atlantic Ocean

Over the last 20 years, it seemed that some type of record was broken when referring to the Atlantic and Caribbean tropical storm and hurricane seasons. From 2019 to 2024, the average number of named storms was above normal with a record-breaking 30 storms in 2020.

As I’ve been stating in previous articles, ocean temperatures near the West Coast of South America and the Equatorial regions are warming up. A new El Nino event was declared in June and is expected to intensify in the coming months.

Last week, there were reports that three earthquakes were recorded off the West Coast near the border of California and Oregon. The strongest one measured a 5.7 and was located about 100 miles to the west of Pistol River, according to the U.S. Geological Survey. These quakes were also near the Cascadia Subduction Zone, which served as a reminder of the potentially damaging earthquakes this region can generate.

Could we have another tough wildfire season?

Conditions across the northwestern part of the U.S. and southwestern Canada have been drier than normal for the spring of 2026. Despite the dry conditions, the 2026 wildfire season has been relatively quiet thus far. In Idaho, there have been 7 wildfires in 2026 through the end of May. The largest was the Sailor Cap that burned 8,292 acres in the southern part of Idaho.

With Groundwater Losses, Many Cities are Sinking

As I’ve mentioned in previous articles, water seems to be becoming scarcer. To accommodate increasing populations and agriculture, the pumping of groundwater is reducing water tables across the globe. As a result, many cities around the world are slowly sinking, a process known as land subsidence. One of the most famous cities that has been sinking is Venice, Italy. However, there are others that are subsiding at a much faster rate.

More record-breaking tropical storms in 2024

On Nov. 30, the 2024 tropical storm and hurricane season in the Atlantic and Caribbean waters officially ended. It was another year of record-breaking storms that led to over $222 billion in total damage. This was the second costliest tropical storm and hurricane season in recorded history.

Bomb cyclones have made headlines this month

Last week, a massive Pacific storm, which was referred to as a “bomb cyclone,” battered the western regions of Washington, Oregon and northern California. In fact, there were two bomb cyclones last week that left as many as 600,000 residents without power.

Since early this year, ocean waters along the equatorial regions have been warming up. U.S. forecasters who carefully watch the trends of ocean warming and cooling have indicated that we have a new El Niño in the south-central Pacific Ocean.
