I have to respond to the editorial in The Press on Jan. 27 regarding the Houston grand jury’s charges in the Planned Parenthood “baby body parts scandal.” The two undercover activists/filmmakers who were charged with tampering with government records (drivers licenses) and conspiracy to purchase fetal body parts, did the country a great service in uncovering Planned Parenthood’s evil business practice, which Planned Parenthood themselves admitted to and promised to end.

Diane Reed: Blazing a banking trail
IN PERSON
COEUR d’ALENE — As an 18-year-old transplant to Coeur d’Alene, Diane Reed wasn’t expecting to blaze a new trail for women in the local banking industry. But over the course of more than 40 years, Reed did just that. She told The Press she moved to the area shortly after her husband graduated from Michigan Tech with a degree in forestry. “It’s still the most gorgeous place I’ve ever seen in my life,” Reed said. “The water, the mountains and then I was with my husband — who I really love — so it was really easy.” Reed added she had to find a job when she moved to the Lake City, and got that job running the proof machine at Idaho First National Bank. She worked at one more bank before being offered a job creating the real estate department at the newly established Mountain West Bank. During her job interview, Reed said she was asked if she could bring in $1 million a month to the department. Although she recognized her lack of formal education could be a detriment, she jumped at the opportunity. “I told them I could do it and it was an opportunity to build my own department,” Reed said. “We did $24 million my first year.” Under Reed’s leadership, the department has expanded throughout the Northwest and cemented itself as the No. 1 real estate lender in Coeur d’Alene. Reed is about to retire and enter the next chapter of her life.

Expanding Medicaid isn't a mortal sin
Here in Idaho, we’re so determined to be the reddest of the red states, we write our budget in red ink. Recently, our legislators voted against accepting Expanded Medicaid coverage, blocking benefits to thousands of would-be recipients throughout the state. As a substitute, Gov. Otter trotted out a state health care plan that will be funded by cigarette taxes. Actually, many programs currently financed by the sale of cigarettes will be redirected to draw from the general fund. Otter has characterized the new state-funded program as “Idahoans helping Idahoans.”

According to scientists at the Australia’s Bureau of Meteorology, the warm-water phenomenon, El Nino, has likely peaked in terms of warmth in the south-central Pacific Ocean. They also state that it’s a guarantee that this El Nino will be in the top 3, in terms of strength, since 1950. Other climatologists said that this current event is the strongest ever measured. An expert in France said that “it is probably the most powerful in the last 100 years.”

Mentoring is a win-win
January is National Mentoring Month. Mentoring can change your life — and the lives of your mentees. Mentoring means helping less-experienced people observe, experiment with and evaluate different work strategies. And the benefits are not limited to young people. People of all ages can gain from the guidance of a more-experienced person. A mentor can help even experienced managers boost their job performance and advance their careers.

Healthy New Year
I love this time of the year! I like the idea of closing the door to the last year and choosing to walk in the open door of the New Year. To me, there is nothing better than a chance to make “new healthy lifestyle choices,” because what else do you and I have but our health?
Massive weight loss: Now what?
So you’ve lost a lot of weight. You may be asking yourself, “now what?” Whether it was through diet and exercise, bariatric surgical intervention, or a combination of both, massive weight loss is an incredible accomplishment and the first step toward a healthy future for those battling obesity. Unfortunately, for many who go through this process, they are often left with excess skin and stretch marks, and can be subject to uncomfortable rashes and infections in the folds of their skin. These patients also battle psychological distress due to the fact that they are confronted with a whole new body image issue after losing the weight. This excess of skin is most common in the arms, chest, abdomen, back/buttocks, and thighs. Surgical intervention is typically the best option for these issues.

Celebrating with my sports 'family'
This is a special Sunday morning — the Seahawks are in the playoffs.
Sometimes you just need to give it a chance
We watched a movie last night. It was one of those films that I describe as “artsy,” great cast but no beautiful stars, no slick sets or great special effects, and no rousing score from John Williams. It is the type of movie I usually blow past on the guide, filmed in kind of a dingy backdrop, folks made to look like everyday folks with everyday struggles, and music that sounds a bit out of tune and muffled. As I watched the movie it started to grow on me albeit slowly and Mary said to me, “Sometimes you just need to give it a bit of a chance.”

NIC men still seeking that respect
It is a common saying when it comes to officials around the basketball courts at Hoopfest in downtown Spokane.
CONGRESS: When duty calls
Mr. Obama has attacked the rights of Americans through his disregard for the Constitution. He has spied on Congress and committed any number of misdemeanors throughout his time in office, many of which have been in the form of lawless executive orders. Sadly, the refusal of Congress to formally challenge these actions has been deplorable.

LETTER: An ugly impression
Freedom of speech is the pillar of our American values and part of what makes this country great. It’s easier than ever to voice our thoughts, which is evident by the number of opinions posted on online publications. Therefore, most of us look to our local newspaper to get information that is unbiased and more informative than what we see online. This was not the case when the Press published ‘Women: Clearly not a fan’.

In the wake of the international climate negotiations in Paris, human-caused climate change is in the news as a pressing human and political issue. While many high-level politicians continue to make unbinding agreements and shun addressing the issue, people from all over the world are making their voices heard and calling for responsible action on all levels.

Diverse ethnic groups can still all get along
Providence has brought varied ethnic groups together to form America as it is today. There has always been change and resistance to change. In the process, we have let history stand as written; that is, until recently. The city council of New Orleans just voted to remove the statues of General Robert E. Lee from all of their public buildings.

IRS: Heard loud and clear

Baby-led weaning: Is it a solid method for feeding?
Baby-led weaning (BLW) is a method for introducing solids to infants without the use of pureed food or spoon feeding. This method of feeding was developed in the United Kingdom. In the United States baby-led weaning refers to the gradual decrease of breast or bottle feedings.
Different kinds of fatigue

LETTER: Grow up, Ekko
First of all, I can’t imagine how sad and lonely you must be. You are most likely someone who has never had love or compassion come from a woman, and for that I pity you. The Internet: Eroding hard copy and concrete
With the increased use of the Internet for the transport of email, text, and instant messages, it is logical to assume there would be an associated decrease in the transport of hard copy mail. Likewise, the same idea would hold for an increase in online shopping and a decrease in business at street stores, as well as a surge in Internet traffic and a decline in hard copy news circulations. These are indeed the trends, as discussed in this article. If these trends continue, the world’s societies and how people spend time will be altered significantly.

A very bizarre letter you printed from “Mr. Ekko V. O’Key in Wednesday’s edition. It is seriously concerning that the Press would print this. Why would you do this, Coeur d’Alene Press? Very disappointing and shows quite poorly for your paper.

The Internet: Watching government surveillance
After the 9/11 attacks, America’s citizenry and its intelligence community developed a fear of what might follow. To compound citizens’ fears, the crumbling to earth of the Twin Towers also crumbled many peoples’ faith in America’s intelligence community. Editorial: The real issue is violence
We won’t shed tears with President Obama over his executive action last week, a move that likely won’t reduce the number of people killed by gunfire. The president overstepped his authority and Congress has nobody but itself to blame. Congress increasingly cedes responsibility to the president that belongs firmly on the legislative body’s shoulders, as the president’s executive actions bypassing Congress and aiming at gun control illustrate.

CARTOON: Crossed the line
Was I the only one who was taken aback by the “political cartoon” in Wednesday’s Press? Normally I schlep off the cartoons but Wednesday’s really went too far. Not only does it disparage all GOP Presidential candidates, but it also references a movie directed by the unapologetic cop basher, Quentin Tarantino. And then to bring it all home, the words are spoken by a little girl. Some “cartoons” just aren’t funny and not worth publishing.
REVIEW: Top stories on target
As it is a common practice for each of us to take a look back at the end of a calendar year, I especially appreciate the end of the year reviews by the media. I thought the Top 10 list of regional stories for 2015 selected by the Coeur d’Alene Press were excellent choices. As to the invitation you gave your readers to add our thoughts, I would only suggest an honorable mention of the 2015 Coeur d’Alene City Council election. Local governments, especially cities, have direct and important impacts on our daily lives. The fact that the City of Coeur d’Alene became the first city in Idaho to be selected to receive the “All American City Award” in 1990 is ample evidence that the voters’ choices for mayors and council members are important. The Coeur d’Alene Press coverage of the 2015 Coeur d’Alene City Council election was extraordinarily well done and demonstrated the height of professional journalism.

Critics claim Uncle Sam’s intelligence agencies failed to do their jobs. In response, the NSA, FBI, DIA, and CIA claim if they only had access to more data, the Twin Towers would still be standing.

The Internet: The power of 'bigmeta'

I am writing in reference to the recent opinion article entitles “My Turn — Curing our nation’s prevalent madness.” The good news is that the author clearly understands that men cannot give birth to children, as she states this fact twice. Progress, not perfection
Discipline is the ability to obey rules or a code of behavior. It is the practice of training people, or teaching them direction, order and regulations. It is a way to control aspects of our life that might get out of control. If you forget your keys all the time, you decide to have a clip that attaches them to your belt or your purse. Or maybe you don't remember what you need to buy at the grocery store, so you post a list that you keep on the refrigerator door. How is it possible that you can come up with easy solutions for these types of things, but when it comes to your health and the choices that regulate your health, you have a much harder time making good choices? Is it because we were never trained in these positive lifestyle choices, or do we know what is best, we just choose not to do them?
Turning the page on the calendar
This year with the way the holidays fell, we even managed a three-day weekend, which was wonderful. We had the time to host a dinner party of our own, catch up on things that needed attention at home after an intense few weeks, and in general relax and regroup. Can I have cosmetic surgery if I'm overweight?
This is one of the most commonly asked questions from patients seeking body contouring procedures. Body weight and how it relates to your body mass index is very important in prescreening patients for their eligibility for surgical intervention. It is even more important in patients who have had massive weight loss. Being at a healthy and stable weight prior to surgery typically means that the patient is more likely to do well in recovery, healing time, and outcome.

My concern is drivers who pay no attention or have any regard to pedestrians. I live on a busy street, Prairie Avenue, where it is five lanes. When I go out to get the Coeur d’Alene Press in the mornings, I wait for traffic to pass and all is clear before stepping into the bicycle lane to retrieve my newspaper.

A cure for the "common" headache
Headaches mean big business, and this is especially the case when the cause underlying the headache pain goes undetected, and therefore the headache pain is not successfully treated. Drugs are not a cure; they are not like antibiotics which actually kill bacteria that are causing the sickness. Drugs only mask the headache pain symptoms until the drug wears off, and they can cause other problems and even make the pain worse so one has to take even higher doses of drugs.

Thursday’s story of a Coeur d’Alene business owner whose customer used a counterfeit bill brought back not-so-fond memories of my day as a suspected felon 25 years ago. Yes, I passed a counterfeit bill — a $100, rare in our lives but appropriate on a one-day family excursion to Sea World. I missed all the fun, instead spending the day waiting in a cold park office for the U.S. Secret Service, then enduring (polite) interrogation while shivering in summer shorts. Luckily, I could prove I got the bill from my bank that morning, so they let me go — just in time to go home.

CUTS: Here's where they hurt
The State of Idaho is refusing to reform Medicaid because they don’t like Obama’s Affordable Care Act. As a result of the cuts they will be making, my grandson will be affected, along with other adults who have had disabilities since childhood. Among services being affected is psychological care by professionals. Also I’ve been told that the company that provides him with a home and professional staff will have a pay cut of 40%. Of course that means they won’t be able to operate. And the State of Idaho has already started closing down the psychiatric hospitals.

OPINION: Calling for debate
I found Wednesday Dec 30th Editorial “Try this resolution on for size” quite interesting. It took reading it three times and I’m still not sure I understand the entire gist of the article. The opinion concluded with blaming the public as consumers of cable news for our divided society. I’m assuming (dangerous thing) the author wants us to rely totally on local news, publications, newspapers, and public discourse to solve our differences. This would be nice if we could depend on local news, publications, and newspapers to report/print the facts and not their version of the truth. Is the author suggesting we bury our heads in the sand and sing “kumbaya”? I don’t think so, but limiting news sources would be similar.
