HELP: A call to seniors

| January 17, 2016 8:00 PM

Now that the holidays are over, and the hustle and bustle has simmered down, you may be looking for something new to do with your time. Volunteering to help children succeed in school is a wonderful option.

The Retired and Senior Volunteer Program (RSVP) provides a tutoring/mentoring program in the schools, grades K through 5. Helping children learn good reading skill gives children a good start in life.

Some kids just need extra help. Volunteering as little as 1-2 hours per week can help a struggling child improve reading skill and build self-confidence. Volunteering is good for the child and good for the volunteer. It feels wonderful to do something valuable to help a child grow.

The hours you spend with these children helps to determine future community program funding priorities. The government studies RSVP volunteer statistics to help determine which worksites should receive priority funding (example: schools, museums, thrift stores, food banks, meals on wheel, etc.)

There are 23 schools in our area and there is great demand for tutors.

If tutoring sounds like a fit for you, please contact Betty Bray-Baker, Area Agency on Aging, Tutoring and Mentoring Program, (208) 667-3179 ext. 241 or [email protected].
