PREP ROUNDUP: Vikings win Winco tournament on late jumper

• BOYS BASKETBALL

CALDWELL — With the game tied at 57-all with time running out, Coeur d’Alene coach Kurt Lundblad put it in the hands of his team to get out of the Treasure Valley with a championship.

And they delivered, much like in the same spot on Friday night.

Sam Matheson hit a floating jumper with 1.5 seconds remaining, pushing the Vikings past the Centennial Patriots 59-57 in the championship game of the Winco tournament at the College of Idaho.

“They tied it with two free throws with 20 seconds remaining,” said Lundblad, who didn’t call a timeout after the made baskets. “We brought it down, set up a play, and Sam just hit a big shot in the lane. It was just a clutch shot by a sophomore.”

Centennial’s last second half court shot came up short with 1.5 seconds remaining.

“I just let the game play out,” said Lundblad of the decision with 20 seconds remaining. “I just saw what they were trying to do and they seemed a little confused, and our kids knew we were going to try to get something in the paint. We were really fortunate to get that shot and get the lead back. It was just a great tournament for us and we got what we wanted out of it with three tough games in three days. Everyone contributed tonight and it was the definition of a team win. Our kids battled for 32 minutes and didn’t quit and I couldn’t be prouder of my team.”

Brody Lundblad had 22 points and four assists, Joey Naccarato had eight points and eight rebounds and Matheson finished with 12 points for Coeur d’Alene (8-1), which plays at Lake City on Tuesday.

Del Jackson scored 16 points for Centennial.

COEUR d’ALENE — Charles Follini scored 11 points for the Panthers in a loss to the Bulldogs at Holy Family Catholic School in the Central Idaho League opener for both schools.

“We were down by three points in the fourth quarter and had a chance to win it,” Coeur d’Alene Charter coach Jarrod Womack said. “We just had a few turnovers at the wrong time and they capatalized on them. They’re a good, tough team. I’m pretty happy with how we played. We played their varsity after not having a (varsity) program last year and we’re definitely taking some positives from it.”

Jeffrey Kersh and Jacob Rutherford scored seven points each for Coeur d’Alene Charter (1-5), which plays at Wallace on Tuesday.

Jake Sieler had 12 points and seven steals and Drake Lounsbury had 10 points and seven steals for St. Maries (8-1), which played without two starters due to winter vacations.

“It was a good game for us,” St. Maries coach Bryan Chase said. “It was good for some of our younger guys to step up and be successful. You could tell we’d gotten out of basketball shape a little, so it was good to get back to the grind. Drake, it was his first time at point guard and he did a really good job.”

Hunter Boudousquie added six points, five boards and three steals, and Wade Stevens five points and five rebounds for the Wampus Cats (0-6), who have played a salty nonleague schedule.

“We were shorter at every position, and they were rushing it. Once we calm down, we’ll be OK in our league,” said Cats head coach George Thornton, noting Selkirk had a 6-foot-6 post along a tall front line. “I liked the way we played. It was positive, the kids can build on that.”

Bryant Moore didn’t score, but added five assists and two blocks, and Spencer Jeffres five rebounds and four points in defeat.

Cark Fork is at Kootenai on Saturday.

Abby Bartlett scored a team-high nine points for Cd’A Charter (2-6).

“We got in foul trouble in the second and third quarters,” Grant said. “I had my five starters on the bench. We had to play some of our JV players in those quarters. We shot the ball OK.”

“In the second half, we picked up our defensive intensity and held them to 14 points,” St. Maries coach Jay Sines said. “I thought our transition game getting up and down the floor was good and the girls were running the floor really well. It was a good team effort. Everyone scored and had positive stats, and you can’t beat that.”

CLARK FORK — Freshman Tessa Sutton drained three 3-pointers in the first period for her team-high nine points and three steals, but a strong start could not sustain, as the Wampus Cats lost to Selkirk in a nonleague game.

Leslie Kiebert tallied seven points and four boards and Brooke Stevens five points and three assists in defeat for the Wampus Cats (3-4), who struggled to find offense against the team from Ione, Washington.

“Tessa came out firing,” said Clark Fork coach Mark Stevens, whose young team was rusty at times after a lengthy layoff. “You could tell we haven’t played for two weeks. We didn’t have the same intensity that we had before the break.”
