GOP: Some presidential advice

| January 22, 2016 8:00 PM

I was watching CNN Tuesday morning when the story broke about the Iowa governor saying do not vote for Ted Cruz because he threatens the state’s farming. I will state here in the beginning of my letter that I am a Democrat so the closed-minded can stop reading. For all those others who consider the opposite party the “Loyal Opposition,” read on.

I do watch the Republican debates. I just watched the Democratic debate. To say the least, I preferred the Democratic debate. Do you want to know why? The Democrats debated the issues that our already great country is facing. There weren’t any derogatory remarks made to the other candidates. Running for president is not a game show. Our lives depend on a president who can get along with the rest of the world.

Other than gay marriage, abortion, and how their God will lead them, how many of the other political stands do you know about the other Republicans? I do not want bedroom or medical police telling me what to do. The ACA should not be scrapped, but it does need repair. Way too much paperwork for doctors and too much interference in patient care.

If you are a senior citizen like I am, do you know that most of the Republican candidates want to lessen or do away with Medicare and Social Security? I do not know about you, but my husband and I paid into these funds all our working lives and expect the government to keep its promise. The two funds are not a giveaway as we and our employers paid into these funds. To those who are younger than 50 or so, are you willing to take in your parents if they no longer have Social Security?

I remember poor people being shown on the news with children with bloated bellies here in the U.S. before food stamps. Children do not get to pick being born to well-off, caring parents. Should America’s hungry children pay for poor or bad parents?

I have traveled a good bit in America and the world and I know that we really have it better than any other country. Americans need to look past the moral platitudes being offered by many Republicans running for president and take a hard look at the real issues facing this great nation. Any candidate who states that America is not the greatest country the world has ever seen should not be running for president.
