Many ways to honor fallen heroes today

Memorial Day is a day of remembrance for those who gave it all to secure the freedoms we enjoy today. Sacrifice is meaningless without honoring those who gave so much, and here in this veteran-friendly area of North Idaho and the Inland Empire, we honor our fallen with ceremonies at local cemeteries, as well as those regionally and nationally.

Napa revisited

We have returned from our weekend touring the Napa Valley with our group of guests who had hired us to help them find the private side of Napa. We are happy to report “the Valley” is in great shape! Is it expensive? Certainly. Are there throngs of people, visitors and residents alike? You bet. Beyond that though it remains one of the most beautiful destinations anywhere, with wine produced there that is the envy of the wine world, and it will no doubt stay that way.

The commonsense dog

I would hope that anyone who chooses to own a dog would also choose to love it, but sometimes it is easy to confuse what loving our dogs look like. Sometimes love is petting our pup. Sometimes love is playing with our pup. Sometimes love is providing for our pup, but a very often overlooked component of love is guiding and instructing our pup.

Pro: The program works

These are already our people. Our family, our friends, or maybe the kid who grew up down the street and played with our kids but then went through some tough and dark times after passing the legal age for adulthood. Often their behavior is associated with the explosion of substance abuse and related activities that bring some into the whole range of experience in the criminal justice system.

FAITHFUL OBSERVATIONS: A book to unite Christians

One of the purposes of these columns this past year was to emphasize the impact of Christianity and Christian ministries in our community. A recent poll stated that 60 percent of agnostics and atheists believe that the Christian church does little or nothing and is basically irrelevant. More disturbing has been the divide in our culture with often a hostility toward Christians and their influence.

OPINION: Democrats launch fundraiser for Post Falls Veterans Home

It’s hard to find a topic that 95 percent of people agree on. And yet, 95 percent of Americans believe it’s the duty of the government to support veterans when they return to the homefront (“American Perspectives on Veterans, Rand Corporation Research, 2021).

OPINION: Hopeful for levy decision that supports students

I have been an educator for 28 years, with 14 of those years working in the great state of Idaho. One of my personal fundamental principles is that of honesty. Honesty is more than not lying. It is also speaking up when necessary. Although remaining silent is a wise approach at times, there are times where silence is inappropriate. I have tirelessly focused my work on what is best for students, while relentlessly working to keep politics out of schools.

OPINION: Pride wrap-up: Gratitude, growth and anticipation

As Pride season draws to a close, we, at the North Idaho Pride Alliance take a moment to reflect on what the last year has meant for us. Established in 2016, NIPA is a budding nonprofit seeking to create a North Idaho where LGBTQIA+ people belong, can connect, and are empowered to thrive. We accomplish this through our threefold approach of educating, advocating, and networking.

Honor your flag and its history

Flag Day is celebrated in the United States on June 14 every year. At the seasonal Middlebrook (New Jersey) encampment of the Continental Army during the Revolutionary War, on June 14, our new flag was hoisted in 1777, which became the tradition of flag day. By resolution passed on that date in 1777, the Second Continental Congress commemorated the adoption of the flag of the United States. President Woodrow Wilson (1856-1924), our 28th president in case you missed it in history class, issued a proclamation in 1916 that officially established June 14 as Flag Day. Though not an official holiday, National Flag Day was established by Act of Congress in 1949.
