CHS in 'virtual' championship playoff

McLean, VA. - Gannett's HighSchoolSports.net and USA TODAY is kicking off the annual ‘Super 25 Virtual National Championship' football playoffs. HighSchoolSports.net will seed the teams, including Coeur d'Alene High School, in the championship bracket, where teams will then face off in computer-simulated matchups, programmed by mathematician Ken Massey. Massey's computer models were used to create the BCS rankings for college football in 1999.

Elsie L. Burt passed July 17, 2011, in Hayden Lake. She was born June 6, 1920, at Barneston, Neb., to Charles and Elsie Plihal. At an early age, the family moved to Kansas where she grew up and was educated. In November of 1939, Elsie married Chester Huffman in Burlington, Kan. In 1951, Elsie moved to Coeur d'Alene. She married Elmer James in 1952. Mr. James died in May of 1973. She married Norman Burt in June of 1975.

Ben Patzer, 86

Hubert Benjamin "Ben" Patzer passed away at Kootenai Medical Center on Monday, Nov. 15, 2010, due to congestive heart failure. Ben was a Coeur d'Alene native who was born on Jan. 12, 1924, to Benjamin and Lydia (Merkel) Patzer. He lived all of his life in Coeur d'Alene where he attended school, participated in sports and graduated with the class of 1942.
