LAKELAND SCHOOL LEVIES: Vote yes

On May 16, you have the opportunity to support your local schools and surrounding community by voting yes. As a renewal of the existing supplemental levy, our continued financial support will have a direct impact by funding safety officers, extracurricular activities, full-day kindergarten, staff, security, electives and building maintenance/improvements. These programs need us!

LLAMAS: Skinny, but well cared for

Let us introduce ourselves; we are the Llama Ladies out on Highway 97. We live with our man, Gelding, on 300 acres. We come in all shapes and colors and get along just fine, thank you very much. We wait in line at the manger for our 50-pound compressed hay. Some humans could take a lesson from us. We are not power hungry. I told you, we are ladies!

Where we stand on Tubbs

Because of recent news coverage of the proposed McEuen re-design project, its potential impact on Tubbs Hill, and the issue of increased use by those with disabilities, we wish to clarify our stand on two specific aspects of that plan, as well as re-affirm the position stated in our earlier letter of Jan. 13. The two issues are the proposed trail on the upper north face of the hill and the availability of access to Tubbs for those with disabilities.

And now, what's next?

The people have spoken! We have told local ousted officials your services are no longer needed - thanks. We've told at least one of our congressional representatives the same, regardless of how much money he spent on burying his opponent with air time. We have gotten a small taste of our true power: It starts from the ground up and we have to keep pushing our representatives to listen to us , not to special interests with agendas that will drown out our voices.

OBAMA: Worst president - ever

I was born during the second term of FDR and thus have lived through the administrations of 13 presidents. I believe our current “president” is by far the worst, most dangerous in the history of America. Obama’s legacy will be socialism, insolvency, and the financial destruction of our country. No thinking person could deny that Obama is a marxist, and is doing everything in his power to destroy our economy with the most massive debt and deficits ever seen in history. He is also systematically intending to surrender America’s sovereignty to the “New World Order” through numerous “trade agreements” which will place America under the U.N. His plan is to utterly destroy our free enterprise system and institute socialism as our new economic system. This very year, we could see the collapse of the word’s financial system which would make the recent “recession” seem like child’s play.

SORENSEN: Another successful event held

Sorensen Magnet School for the Arts & Humanities celebrated another successful parent, teacher and community auction event on March 23 called “Viva Sorensen.” The annual auction-soiree raises funds to specifically support the additional programs and activities that make our magnet school unique. We could not thrive as an outstanding school without the support of our staff, parents, community and our school board.

CDA: Not quite picture-perfect

Coeur d'Alene. It is a beautiful place and the people, for the most part, are great. Yes, it is a great place to be, but it is not without its faults. I mean the perception one gets from observing our local government entities and how they spend our tax money.

HOME: Payment delay hurts badly

In regard to your Medicaid article dated 3-31-10, in the Cd’A Press. WE are a C.F.H. that cares for loved ones that cannot stay in their own home for whatever reasons. We love this person and care for him as our own. We have a very modest clean home that houses this person. We had an outside job but saw a need in our community to care for these Clint’s so we promised God that we would use his house, for his work. That will go on forever, but to do this we need to know that our money will be there for us to do his wonderful job that the lord provided for us. These are people too and they need to be cared for also. I’m sure most people go home with your checks , and think nothing about the rest of the world. It was just last month when computers were down and we again had to wait for three weeks to be paid. How fair was that? We cannot wait another month or so to be paid for our service. What about our elderly people? What will happen to them? Who will care! If the lord would of helped us with a bigger home I know we would care for more people if we could, sinse we only have one spare room, one is all we can have, at this time. They worked hard and our mentally ILL PEOPLE CANT. BUT GOD DON’T MAKE NO JUNK.

ABSENTEE VOTING BILL: Senseless voter suppression

The proposed Alfieri bill, to limit absentee voting, was a topic of discussion, consternation and concern at our weekly prayer circle gathering. We range in age from 70 to 95 and we take our right to vote very seriously. Our fathers, grandfathers and some of our husbands fought in wars that had every bit to do with freedom and democracy. The right to vote is the keystone of any democracy.

MY TURN: Standing against hate in our community

The recent incident at McEuen Park, where students from the Coeur d’Alene Tribe were racially harassed, is a stark reminder of the work we must continue to do to foster a community of respect and understanding. Hate, in any form, cannot be tolerated. It is not just an attack on individuals but an assault on the very fabric of our community.

Raise our flag high and fight back

I read with deep sadness the letter from Gerald and Jeanine Bauerle in the July 2 edition of The Press. I was thankful, however, to see such a deeply held conviction and love of our country. I have had much of the same discouragement that they spoke of, myself, and I suspect we hold many of the same political beliefs.

STUDENTS: Let's keep it green

Our community seems to be ignoring some environmental issues that have a heavy impact on our ecosystem.

SCHOOLS: Meet most basic need

I am writing today, not only as a lifetime resident of Coeur d’Alene School District 271 and a parent of two incoming Canfield Middle School students, but as a product of the double shifting that took place in 1986 and 1987 in our district. To think that our lack of safe and efficient facilities could put us back on that path makes me shudder.

ELECTION: It's your duty

I am writing to encourage people of ALL ages to be informed and vote! It is our responsibility to vote. Our founding fathers clearly intended that we should accept this responsibility without hesitation. Not only is voting a responsibility but it’s our right from the Constitution. We need to take full advantage of our rights, including to vote.

KEC: One class act

During two of the hottest days on record, we had a crew of five courteous men working to bury our power line. A temporary heavy cable had been installed on top of the frozen ground to restore our power during the winter storm that left hundreds of trees and lines down. That storm also left about 20 feet of line, downed by a fallen tree, lying on our access road. This was promptly attended to. One cannot help thinking of them working around the clock to keep our lives safe, functional and bright. During the best and worst conditions, their work is highly technical and dangerous.

CAMERON: Love this country

Steve Cameron wrote “one player (football quarterback Colin Kaerpernick) who knelt during the anthem has been blackballed forever,” but other players who committed crimes have been back in the NFL within two years. Steve, that is because “The Star-Spangled Banner” is not just another song — it is our national anthem. A “song” representing our nation — it is symbolic of our loyalty and love of our great country, the United States of America.
