BUD: This one's for you
Enclosed is an article I came across while surfing the Internet [“A National Treasure resides among us,” by Dan Brockway Sr., published in The Press Aug. 31, 2012.] To my surprise and delight it refers to an old fr…
FAMILY: Long may it bind
Joan Harman seems offended because of my criticism of President Obama, and I choose not to respond to that portion of her recent letter to the editor. We both believe that too many people who profess to be Christia…
FLAG: Take down at your own risk
Old Glory, long may this one wave. Oh, here we go again, the possibility of observing bureaucratic malfeasance in action. I refer to the chance that the American flag could be torn down from its lofty perch on a fo…
JAIL: No lease, so start over
It is now time for the Board of County Commissioners to take the lease of a private jail off the table. Judge Stegner, on Friday, Aug. 29, ruled the proposed lease agreement does not pass constitutional muster. Whi…
LOST DOG: Prayer and Penny prevail
On Aug. 25 around 10 a.m., we had a delivery and left our gate open. Our small dog, a 4-pound female Chihuahua named Reba, slipped out of the house, and out of the gate and was gone before we knew it. Despite our b…
TULLAMORE: A deeper look
Will the real socialists please stand up?!
WORKERS: Term used loosely

I have lived in the Mica Flats area for 11 years and have appreciated the convenience of the dumpsters on Kidd Island Road. As of 2-3 years ago, we can also recycle mixed paper, aluminum and cardboard at the same s…
FLAG: No pain, only pleasure
I agree with L. Hawks on the flag in the forest. What does it hurt? I didn’t see it until it was pointed out to me, and now I look at it when I go that way. It is the symbol of this country, so what does it hurt? I…
CHOCOLATE: Yes, Jesse's is terrific
In Sholeh Patrick’s recent column geared to chocolate-lovers, I was pleased that she recommended Chef Jesse’s chocolate eclairs at Kynrede Cafe in Hayden. In an area where chain restaurants are abundant and too man…
PHONES: Record police encounters
I might have missed this article (“I’m a cop” by Sunil Dutta) if it was in The Press. Seems to me to be very well written by somebody in the “business” today. The only flaw I see (and I agree with body and car came…
