MICA: Don't be misled, voters
As a 20-year medical volunteer with MKI Fire, a person who has been intimately involved in District finances since the addition of the medical unit in 1995 and current sitting MKIFD Treasurer for the past 7 years, I feel that it is imperative that voters know the facts regarding the upcoming MKIFD Commissioners elections.
ENGLISH: Not best for city
Our county suffered embezzlement when Dan English was County Clerk. The embezzler worked for him. At a trial he perjured himself.
EDINGER: A neighborhood champ
Ron Edinger deserves your vote for the Coeur d’Alene City Council so he can continue serving the residents of this community as he has for the past 40 years. When our east Mullan neighborhood was seeking changes to protect the future and vitality of our neighborhood, Ron was invariably the one on the council making the motion to support our requests. He recognizes that strong neighborhoods are the key to a vibrant city. Ron’s votes reflect the values of his constituents.
ENGLISH: Why he is qualified
My firm endorsement of candidate Dan English for City Council, Seat 5, currently held by Steve Adams, is not without my research into his background. I’ve found him to be a strong candidate. First of all, his reasoning to run for this position is because he is concerned about our community growth and progress. He is also concerned about the increased local tax burden dumped on homeowners. Dan will take a non-partisan, proactive approach to issues concerning our community as he has in the past by considering each issue on its merits and value to this community and not to judge from a pre-set ideology.
LUNDY: Honesty just one attribute
The citizens of Dalton Gardens will be well served when they elect Denise Lundy to their City Council. Over the last eight years I have had the distinct pleasure of serving with Denise in various leadership capacities. She is honest beyond reproach and therefore highly ethical. When faced with difficult decisions she always listens carefully to every point of view and makes her decision based on her objective observations. Denise is a dedicated public servant already donating time, money and resources to community wide organizations — always willingly and enthusiastically.

COEUR d’ALENE — An unusual alliance spoke out Friday against what it called “a last-minute attempt to deceive voters” in the Coeur d’Alene City Council races.
Move to the right, America
There comes a point in time when every nation decides the course of action that will irrevocably determine their future. Their choice will either lead to peace and prosperity or to destruction. We can look at history, and also the present, and see where totalitarian governments have failed the people they rule. They have oppressed, imprisoned, and murdered those who oppose them. The wealth is gathered by the powerful and the poor suffer for want of the very necessities of life.
Bless this Halloween
Let’s think about Halloween. “Halloween” means “a hallowed evening.” “Hallowed” means “Something to be considered and treated as holy.” Thus, “Halloween” refers to the evening before All Saints Day, which traditionally for centuries meant a day to celebrate that we are surrounded by a company of witnesses in Heaven. This comes from Hebrews 12:1: Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us.
Minerals revisited
In the world of nutrition, there is a lot of talk around supplements and the pros and cons of vitamins and other essential nutrients. I do believe there are very good reasons to supplement your nutritional needs, but I also feel pretty strongly that you can get all your needs from whole nutritional foods.

You know how, when a cop pulls you over for speeding, your defense is, “It just ain’t fair — you were using an unmarked car!” Well, that’s the sum total of the pro-abortion leaders’ defense against pro-life videos showing the vile business of their baby chop shops. Like stolen cars, these babies are worth more to Planned Parenthood when sold by the part instead of as living human beings.

Reading Wednesday’s CDA Press, we are committed more than ever to vote against Ron Edinger. So he has been in since Nixon was president and feels he needs no training, he knows it all. VOTE: For strong oversight
In light of the three recent cases of embezzlement in the city of Athol, Cd’A and the chief deputy clerk of the county under Dan English, isn’t it time that the voters recognize we have a pervasive problem with lackluster oversight by our elected officials? It is past time that the voters refuse to elect or re-elect someone who didn’t exercise adequate vigilance over those handling our public money. If we can’t expect our local government officials not to line their pockets or their friend’s pockets with our money, how are we better than Detroit or Chicago?

DEBATE: Question the questioners
If you ever thought that the Democratic Party and the national media were unethical and dishonest you were given clear proof Wednesday night at the Republican presidential debate. Attitude of the questioners, the gotcha nature of the questions and the bald attempt to embarrass the debaters with false claims of fact were in my opinion a disgusting example of what I have been thinking for years. The debate did much to help the Republicans and much to negatively impact the Democrats and the media.

GUNS: Put 'em down and talk
Wednesday, Oct. 28, Bill Rutherford wrote an extremely thoughtful article about being a gun owner and hunter while also being the principal of a local elementary school. He also has served in the military and received extensive training in weapons safety.

LAKELAND: Still no love, Press
Well here I am again writing on behalf of the small high school Lakeland Hawks. So Wednesday morning I open the sports page to find once again a HUGE photo of the Mighty Lake City High boys soccer team plastered at the top of the page. Congrats to them for placing third in the 5A tournament! Great! What about the Lakeland Hawks, who shut out two top teams to get to the finals? They finished second in a brutal game against Pocatello [Century]. Their headline on Sunday read: Lakeland Boys Denied First Title Trip. Where’s their big photo with their trophy? Maybe if we played Lake City and beat them again we would get a HUGE Photo and more love. Guess I will have to wait till next year and we DOMINATE STATE for 1st Place.
MICA: Why Hauser, Arhutick are best
I am writing this endorsement in support of Mike Arhutick and Gretchen Hauser, candidates for open commissioner seats at the Mica Kidd Island Fire Protection District. As a former volunteer and Treasurer of the District and a resident of the area for over 20 years, I am well aware of the qualities needed to be a successful commissioner. Both Gretchen and Mike possess those qualifications. They are concerned about the current direction of the district, and both will work diligently to return the interests of the taxpayers to the forefront, and both will also encourage and support the participation of more local volunteers in the district operations. Mike was one of the original commissioners for the district when it was formed and he has detailed knowledge of the financial operations of a district. Gretchen is a long-term resident of the district and is actively involved in many community groups. Both have the time and energy to meet all the demands of being a commissioner. I urge your vote for both Mike Arhutick and Gretchen Hauser.
WATER: Setbacks make perfect sense
I was unable to attend the last planning commission meeting which dealt with setbacks for sensitive areas such as bodies of water. And, I understand that the 25-foot minimum setback is still problematic for those who wish to landscape and spread fertilizer to the water’s edge. In light of this year’s drought and the potential for its continuation due to climate change, we should be discussing how we can protect and conserve our water, not how to tweek the rules.
Smith keeps focus on Dalton's rural lifestyle
DALTON GARDENS — Jamie Smith said she is running for a seat on the Dalton Gardens City Council to help maintain the semi-rural lifestyle she and her family have enjoyed for years.
ABORTION: Common sense solutions

Jordan seeks to change council culture, stay rural
DALTON GARDENS — Scott Jordan said he is running for a seat on the Dalton Gardens city council to help change the culture of the governing body.
ROETTER: Good for taxpayers
Matt Roetter would be an excellent choice for the Hayden City Council. I know his efforts to affect a good outcome on local issues is always based upon facts. He listens and gives you his undivided attention. When Matt decides an issue needs a conclusion he stays focused with thorough research. In short, he does his homework. Hayden taxpayers would be well served to have Matt represent them.
TAYLOR: No longer in Dalton race
This letter is to inform the residents of Dalton Gardens that I have officially withdrawn from the race for City Council. In the past few weeks, circumstances in my life have changed leaving me unable to hold office. My understanding is that the ballots have been printed and my name will still appear. As such, I would like to encourage any voters who were intending to support me, to cast their vote for either Jamie Smith or Denise Lundy. I know both of these women and know they would do an excellent job for the residents of Dalton Gardens.

Pink cupcakes
There they were standing on the dock at the lake, my nieces' high school varsity volleyball team. They were not in their typical volleyball attire, instead they were dressed to the nines in beautiful short dresses and high heels for the homecoming dance. My niece was dressed in a short pink frock, and she joked that she was a “pink cupcake.” Under all those twirling skirts were their spandex volleyball shorts, and while we were taking their pictures, they showed off their muscular, toned teenage legs with a quick skirt pull. All of us taking pictures laughed. They were so cute, so fun, so free, no body image issues for them.
Ancient herbs used to boost immunity
White blood cells (WBCs or leukocytes), are the defensive frontline of the immune system. WBCs are created in bone marrow, the spongy tissue at the center of large bones. There are five distinct types of WBC’s that have been identified. Neutrophils are considered the first responders of the immune system and are the most abundant. Studies have shown that a lower neutrophil count correlates to a great risk of infection and greater severity of infection.

That reminds me of a saying by John Milton: “License when the cry liberty; for who loves that must first be wise and good.” Are the Freedom Caucus and by extension, Raul Labrador wise and good? I think the answer must be no.

CAUCUS: They're bomb throwers
Your editorial of Oct. 23 was disturbing in the credit you give to the Freedom Caucus and other extremists in Congress. By the way, we have a disproportionate number of like-minded legislators from our area.
City of Cd'A planning for health - where health and economic vitality collide
City planning and zoning originated during the industrial revolution to separate incompatible uses and protect people from infectious disease by moving residential areas away from industry, providing sewer systems, and ensuring light and fresh air.
CAUCUS: On the right track
Good editorial on Friday, Oct. 23. I am one of the supporters of the “renegades” who are trying to inject some sense to the elite in Washington, regardless of the impact on their personal advancement. Maybe, for once, we have some representatives in Washington who care more about the future of the country than of their own situation.

HILLARY: Guilty of treason
I am a Vietnam-era veteran and remember what Hanoi Jane, aka Jane Fonda, did in Hanoi. She met the definition of a traitor giving aid and comfort to an enemy of the United States of America. I am sure most if not all veterans remember; I sure do and will never forget. I have three sons who did numerous tours in Iraq and Afghanistan, two Army officers and a Navy Seal. What she did and said can never be overlooked and dismissed by any patriot of the USA.
Moments of humanity part of job
Back in August, in the midst of those last glorious dog days of summer, I accepted the position of interim director of the Post Falls Food Bank.
SHELTON: Sees the big picture
I am voting for Chris Shelton for Fire Commissioner.
LUNDY: All about service
For many years, I have had the great privilege to collaborate with Denise Lundy on real estate business dealings, on planning and zoning matters, and in service together as board members on the North Idaho Centennial Trail Foundation. In all of her many roles, Denise can be trusted to be honest, fair, hard working, and someone who listens and cares. She is super-dedicated to community service, and she has demonstrated her commitment to preserve the quality of life we enjoy in North Idaho. The citizens of Dalton Gardens would be well served by her service on the city council.

ENGLISH: Experience just one asset
Although I am not a voter in the Cd’A city election, I am active within the Cd’A community and compelled to publicize my support of Dan English for the Coeur d’Alene City Council. I met Dan in 1984, when he interviewed then hired me as teacher in the newly developed Day Treatment program at Anchor House, a treatment home for troubled youth. Seven years later, in a move to preserve the viability of Anchor House as a community resource, Dan negotiated a merger between Anchor House and the Idaho Youth Ranch. The Ranch has remained as a valuable community partner and provider of services for families and children since then.
ROETTER: Big man, big heart
A good friend of mine, Matthew Roetter, is running for the Hayden City Council. I first met Matt several years ago at a Bible study meeting. It did not take long to learn he is a big guy with a gentle nature and big heart. When my son was having health problems and needed to move from his apartment, Matthew volunteered to help move him. This was to be expected from Matt, since he is a loving husband and father.

When did drug dealing become an OK crime?
The U.S. Justice Department recently announced that it will release 6,000 inmates from federal prisons beginning this month to reduce penalties for “non-violent” drug dealers. Up to 50,000 federal inmates are now eligible for reduced sentences or early release under this new policy. This is the largest one-time release of federal prisoners ever, yet there is no public outcry.

CLUB: Great for kids, community
A big shout out to the Coeur d’Alene Garden Club whose continuous support of the greenhouse and the gardens at Hayden Meadows have been unfailing. I want to thank the club once again for this support. Their donation gives us the supplementary income that allows us to improve and sustain our gardening projects. Thanks to them, all the little hands (and big ones too) at Hayden Meadows get dirty while planting seeds and starts in our greenhouse. Sadly, there are some blisters from pulling weeds in the gardens, but in the end, there are many smiles and smarter children. These projects are but catalysts Meadows’ teachers capitalize on while teaching just about every subject. Math to Writing, Art to Music, and Character Building are all part of this program. Further, children at Meadows are growing and harvesting vegetables for our local food banks.

Neighborhood of the week: Cherry Hill
While we’re seeing a lot of new neighborhoods pop up in our area, there are still those established communities that feel as though they have been here forever. Liz Montgomery: Teaching roots put to good use as SIDS Foundation director
IN PERSON
Anyone in the region who knows the pain of dealing with Sudden Infant Death Syndrome probably knows Liz Montgomery. It’s also likely parents whose lives have never been touched by the tragic syndrome have met Montgomery, the director of the Inland Northwest SIDS Foundation. After losing a child to SIDS, she became a staunch advocate for the cause, raising awareness and funding for years. Her nonprofit works to educate community members about the risks that could lead to SIDS. It also offers the only support group for infant and pregnancy loss in Idaho.
Safety first
Last month was Realtor safety month and our members were well supplied with reminders and classes to learn self-defense and safety. The murder of Arkansas Realtor Beverly Carter was just a year ago. Now as another reminder comes news that Bill James, the lawyer for Carter’s accused killer Arron Michael Lewis, 34, announced in court last week that Lewis will plead insanity even though state doctors have examined him twice and determined he is mentally sound. Lewis’ trial is set to begin in January, and prosecutors are seeking a life sentence.

GUNS: It's all about the people
Progressives make the analogy that guns, specifically semi-automatics, cause homicides and suicides. According to Hillary Clinton, the Supreme Court was wrong in ruling that citizens have a right to firearms for self-defense. According to Clinton, only governments and their representatives have that right. Even pro-gun Bernie Sanders is now on the bandwagon for banning all semi-auto rifles. Clinton says if elected she will take executive action to eliminate the lawsuit protections for the firearm industry and allow victims of violence to sue the manufacturers into oblivion.
TRAINS: Oil leaves a nasty trail
After the North Dakota crude oil boom started, trains began hauling explosive Bakken crude oil through North Idaho. Two or three crude-by-rail trains, with more than 100 cars each, travel daily through communities to refineries and shipping terminals on the Washington coast. As Idaho residents, all we get are risks to our lives, land and water, plus long waits at railroad crossings.
LETTERS: Use 'debating' principles
I’m responding to two letters in the Oct. 16 Press from Ray A. Fink and Lawrence Kettle. They both use “debating” principles instead of honesty, accuracy or a any real goal to make America better. Characterizing everything that has been done with Obama as president has failed is absolute unsupportable hyperbole.
SENIORS: Hurt by government greed
Once again, thanks to our government and it’s powers-that-be, seniors and the disabled will once again be taking it in the shorts, if what we are hearing/reading is true. There will be cutbacks on our Social Security 2016 checks, Medicare and no COLA in January. They talk about Social Security incomes of $50K, and above. They don’t mention that it also affects those of us who collect much less than that. I’d love to have $50K a year! Are the illegals included in the cutbacks, or will they continue to reap every freebie the government can create for them?

INTRUDER: You should be grateful
A few nights ago, driving home, I remotely opened the door to my garage. You ran inside shouting, waving your arms and acting bizarrely. I watched as you began rummaging through the garage and removing items from my wife’s car. I was very angry and began to get out of my car until my wife pointed out that you were younger and bigger, and that I was relatively defenseless. We called 911 from our car and the police arrived quickly. After a few minutes they were able to subdue you. Even in handcuffs you were difficult to wrestle into a patrol car, and as you and the police drove off, we could hear you screaming.
HYBRIDS: Now paying the price
I too, was surprised when I renewed my auto registration in late July. The extra fees were for HB312 and hybrid fees.

MAIL: A great way to vote
Voting by mail has several advantages over traditional polling such as being cost effective, increased participation among voters and it is easier for election officials to conduct. It also allows for voting lists to be more up-to-date. Best of all, it gives voters a longer opportunity to study the ballot and find answers to their questions.
CARRY: Liberty is in jeopardy
Re: Constitutional Carry; The article about the Rally fails to make something clear: There is no license needed to carry “open.” I can walk down any street in Idaho with a holstered gun on my hip and that’s perfectly legal. But let it get cold or rain and I need to put on my coat? BAM! I am now a criminal - unless I have a little plasticized card that says I’ve paid fees, been fingerprinted/background checked, etc. The same applies to my wife if she just wants to put her gun in her purse. We must have “the blessing of the king,” so to speak. All this just to put on my coat?
SHOOTINGS: You can't fix stupid
Doesn’t this just paint a picture of the problem? According to Fox, Lt. Col. Ben Garrett, an Army spokesman, said Mercer was in the service at Ft. Jackson, South Carolina, starting on Nov. 5, 2008. But by Dec. 11, 2008, he was discharged for failing to meet the minimum administrative standards. What this means is he couldn’t pass the Army’s screening, including physical and mental health, and the ability to score reasonably on math and reading comprehension, and mind you “multiple-choice” answers.

IMMIGRANTS: U.S. punishes the legitimate
It breaks my heart and infuriates me to read about the way our government is cruelly manipulating the thousands of educated and highly skilled legal immigrants who have spent years trying to become citizens of this country. They have followed all the rules and have made tremendous sacrifices, both financially and emotionally, to become citizens and permanent residents, yet Washington has provided an open door (albeit a back door) policy for the MILLIONS of ILLEGAL immigrants who are usurping government benefits, breaking laws with impudence, committing crimes and living off OUR tax dollars with Washington’s blessing. Does it not seem ironic that our government is doing its best to discourage the very people we should be WELCOMING into our country, and welcoming those we should be doing everything in our power to DISCOURAGE?

NOISE: Please keep it down

RECORDS: This one is broken
I am writing to show my frustration with the way Idaho bureaucracy works when increasing costs for public requests and how they neglect to inform citizens of those changes. I had a baby at the end of May. In the middle of June, I received a letter about the birth certificate for my baby and how to order a certified copy with a $13 cost. I will admit my error with not sending it in until August due to financial constraints with being on leave from work; however, nowhere in the letter did it advise that the cost was going up on July 1 to $16.

CRISIS: Center for humanity
Kootenai County is in the midst of an expensive humanitarian disaster, but help is on the way. Currently, those who are in mental health crisis are being warehoused in our jails at taxpayer expense. This practice is more expensive than providing proper treatment, provides terrible outcomes for society by criminalizing vulnerable people and introducing them to a criminal social network, and above all, it is manifestly inhumane. But, when law enforcement is called because someone is acting outside the norms of our society, there is no other option for protection of the public. Until now.

WAGES: Downside to some raises
There has been considerable discussion lately in the national and local press about raising the minimum wage. I think it is important to point out that raising the wage always benefits the person who receives it, but does not benefit the person who does not have a job because he is suddenly not qualified for the specified wage. It seems to me that the choice of wage is somewhat arbitrary. Even at the wage chosen, a person with a family cannot live. Even at $10 an hour you cannot support a family. This amounts to $20,800/year which is still below the national poverty level.
