PREP VOLLEYBALL: 'Jacks fire back to advance to 2A state
TROY — Sometimes, all a team needs is a little reminder from its coach just what they’re playing for to get motivated.
The St. Maries Lumberjacks got that in so many words after falling behind a set in the 2A District 1-2 championship match on Thursday at Troy High.
They didn’t forget it either.
Kari Ghramm had 16 kills, eight digs and four blocks to lead the top seeded Lumberjacks to an 18-25, 25-23, 25-11, 25-10 win over the second seeded Grangeville Bulldogs to advance to the state 2A tournament starting next Friday at Lakeland High in Rathdrum.
“The main thing I did was to remind them what was at stake,” St. Maries coach Amy Scheer said. “They had to get in there and do the work and push themselves. The second game was back and forth, but getting that win helped. But I just kept reinterating that they had to dot the work, and in Game 3 and 4, they were just on fire. Sometimes stating the obvious helps tremendously.”
Kelsey Auer had 28 assists, Page Sines eight digs and Devyn Wilson 14 kills for St. Maries (18-1), which opens the state tournament against the runner-up from District 3 at 10 a.m. next Friday.
