BONNERS FERRY — On a night when the offense was a bit off, the St. Maries Lumberjacks defense stepped up impressively in nonleague play.

St. Maries’ defense held Bonners Ferry to 32 yards on offense in a 21-0 win, improving to 6-0 on the season.

“It’s kind of what we talked about after the game,” St. Maries coach Craig Tefft said. “There’s going to be some nights when the offense isn’t clicking. But we only held them to one first down, and we just did a fantastic job defensively.”

St. Maries had 110 yards rushing and 109 passing and will host Grangeville to open Central Idaho League play next Friday.

Bonners Ferry (2-3) hosts Kellogg to open Intermountain League play next Friday.

COEUR d’ALENE — Monique Queen scored on an assist in the 46th minute on an assist from Camryn Wendlandt for the Timberwolves in a nonleague draw with the Bulldogs at the Irma Anderl Soccer Complex.

“We weren’t really sharp at the beginning of the game,” Lake City coach Matt Ruchti said. “It just came down to finishing opportunities and we weren’t as efficient as we’ve been. We worked hard and controlled the majority of the match, but need to be more efficient in front of the net.”

Timberlake 2

Lakeland 1

RATHDRUM — Shelby Starr’s unassisted goal midway through the second half proved to be the game-winner as the visiting Tigers upended the Hawks at Sunrise Rotary Field.

It was the second win for Timberlake (13-0-1) over Lakeland (3-6-3) in two meetings this season.

“It’s never happened in the eight years I’ve been at Timberlake, and for it to happen twice in one season is quite an accomplishment,” Timberlake coach Steve Michaels said. “We just came out flat (Tuesday vs. Coeur d’Alene Charter, in a 2-2 tie), and Charter played a great game; Charter was able to dominate the match. We were lucky to get out of there with a tie. We feel like we are back on track.”

Timberlake (8-0-1 in the Intermountain League) wraps up regular season play today with an 11 a.m. IML match at Kellogg.

Also today, Lakeland is scheduled to visit West Valley at noon.

First half — 1, LL, No. 10 Hendry (unassisted), 13:00. 2, TL, Allison Kirby (unassisted), 16:00. Second half — 3, TL, Shelby Starr (unassisted), 60:00.

Lakeland drops pair in tri-match

RATHDRUM — Lakeland warmed up for league play next week and lost both matches in a nonleague tri-match on Thursday, falling in four games to Post Falls and three to Skyview.

“I thought the girls played really hard against Post Falls,” Hawks coach Kylee Garitone said. “We didn’t serve-receive really well, but we defended well. We blocked well, which was a huge success for us.”

In the loss to Post Falls, Trojans Allie Munday finished with a double-double with 14 kills and 17 digs. Andra Beck 12 assists and five aces. Kayla Mayo passed out 14 assists.

For Lakeland (5-12), Sierra Mayberry finished with seven kills, four blocks, three aces. Brooke Mayberry had 22 assists and Brooklynn Bunch five aces and 11 digs.

Madison Cope had five blocks against Skyview.

“We continued to block well,” Garitone said. “However, Skyview had a quick offense and we struggled in serve-receiving.”

Lakeland and Post Falls are both scheduled to play in the Sheridan Volleyball Classic in Spokane today.
