DANCE: Update district policy

| October 7, 2015 9:00 PM

I am writing in response to the article about LCHS denying entry to the homecoming dance. It was not only homeschool kids but those in nearby districts and alternative settings that were turned away. This policy is outdated and needs to be updated. If it comes down to safety than they could do mini background checks like they do for parents who want to volunteer in the school buildings. I have a daughter who no longer is in the district due to many issues yet she is allowed to enter LCHS for musical numbers and performances without any concern for school safety as long as she has money. She is also able to volunteer in the grade school without any safety issues.

So in closing it seems strange to me that the schools are always looking for ways to make more money but yet are being selective on some occasions on accepting money from kids that aren’t a part of their district that are trying to support a student body that they are not a part of. In this day and age shouldn’t we be encouraging acceptance and community bonding? There are plenty of ways to keep our students safe, while welcoming those not a part of District 271 into our buildings. This policy needs updating. There is no excuse on excluding students that are either in other districts or alternative settings due to safety concerns that you cannot prove.
