LEVY: Helps few and hurts many

1. Check out the “CdA Schools.org” website under “Power Point” and “Facts” and you’ll see that not only is our levy rate NOT one of the lowest but it is indeed one of the HIGHEST among the 10 ISAT Schools and the second highest among the six schools with ISAT Scores close to ours. Meridian has a 44 percent lower levy rate and its ISAT score is within 3 percent of ours! Unfortunately you will have to write down the levy rates from “Facts” and add them to the ISAT graph under “PowerPoint.” Under “Facts” our levy rate is in the middle of 13 schools which include Lakeland, Moscow, Post Falls and Kellogg.

LEVY: Perspective leads to support

After 19 years working as a librarian in the Coeur d'Alene School District, I am preparing to retire in June. From an open, centrally located library, my unique perspective has allowed me to observe the amazing things that go on during every school day.

ULUC: Kill it and start over

In recent weeks my wife and I have had to spend over $3,000 on legal and consulting fees to protect our ownership of what is already ours. This is a direct result of the Unified Land Use Code that is being pushed ahead by Commissioners Tondee, Green and Nelson. I have been assured by Commissioner Green that I really have nothing to worry about. But let me ask this of the residents of Kootenai County, both urban and rural: If the industrial zoning classification, which has been in place since 1973, of your manufacturing plant is being replaced with a conditional use permit, or something similar, and your home is going to be classified as a “non-conforming entity” would you be worried? If the government says, “things will be OK,” would you believe it? I think not.

The January edition of the North Idaho Business Journal illustrates predictions of a good local economy for this new year. Local prognosticators have projected continued improvement in our real estate and employment markets. Their estimates range from 6-8 percent improvement in Kootenai County home prices which, if accurate, will keep pace with recent trends.

Raydeane Owens: You are here

I love to travel to new places and experience new things. The first thing I do when I reach an unfamiliar destination is find something with directions to get my bearings. You know those maps - the ones that give a bird’s eye view of your surroundings and then have a red dot with an arrow that says, “You are here”?

RADICALS: Know the players

Some 70 or 80 years ago we had friends Democrats and Republican. We all ran around together; our differences being minor, yet we all had faith and love of our country. Most of us are wondering why it so different today. I will explain by listing some names.
