The Commonsense Dog
If you haven’t noticed already, my articles focus a lot on perspectives, whether from the dog’s point of view, the owner’s, or bystander’s. Now that we have spent so much time discussing perspectives, let’s tackle another aspect of dog training and dog ownership—shame.

A smart boost in testosterone
Testosterone plays a necessary role in the human body. It’s the key male sex hormone that regulates fertility, body hair growth, muscle and bone mass. While men have significantly higher levels of testosterone in their bodies, women produce the hormone as well, and both genders can be affected by out-of-whack levels.

Our community in the times of COVID-19
Our lives are different today. Different than even a week ago. Gov. Brad Little’s statewide order to stay home changed things for all of us. The order can be found on the city’s website at cityofamericanfalls.com or on the state’s website at coronavirus.idaho.gov. It has changed even for those of us defined within the order as “essential personnel” and “essential businesses.” I do not believe the change is over and residual effects of the change may be around after COVID-19 ceases to exist on its present scale. Let’s be sure that those changes left in place after the pandemic exhibit the best in each of us.
PETS: Secure them in safety
An important opportunity to educate the public was missed in the article "Cool in a Crisis" about Makayla Gorden and her unfortunate vehicle accident where the family's dog was injured and had to be euthanized. Makayla wants to be a veterinarian and tried to comfort the dog after the accident and during the ride to the vet clinic.
ANIMALS: Stop inhumane testing
Each year approximately 80,000 dogs, 20,000 cats, and 300,000 bunnies and hundreds of thousands of other animals are used to test cosmetics, household products, cleaners, and more for non-medical reasons. The dogs are tattooed, debarked, kept in cages and subjected to painful procedures and experiments — repeatedly. Their lives are devoid of sunlight, fresh air, fun and freedom. Seventy thousand of the dogs used are beagles because of their friendly, docile, trusting and forgiving personalities.
DOG: Press editorial misfired
The Press editorial missed the point of the outrage about the police shooting a dog in his owner’s car vs. another violent human strangling a woman and her daughter.
Familiar, yet always innovative
The lines of food and wine are always intersecting, and in the best of circumstances they do so in wonderful ways. For most wine lovers it is just impossible to reflect on their favorite food and dining experiences and not factor in that bottle they had that paired perfectly. A recent restaurant experience just cemented this notion for me, and I think will do so who make the worthwhile trip to visit this great venue.

The Common-sense Dog: The genetic factor
I hope I have made it clear in the last year of writing this column that not all dogs are the same, not all breeds are the same, and not all owners are the same. They are very different, and many different factors come into play when it comes to training and behavioral issues. One factor we haven’t discussed is genetics.
Sea creatures flee, gather near shore
GULF SHORES, Ala. - Dolphins and sharks are showing up in surprisingly shallow water just off the Florida coast. Mullets, crabs, rays and small fish congregate by the thousands off an Alabama pier. Birds covered in oil are crawling deep into marshes, never to be seen again.
