PETS: Secure them in safety

| September 10, 2010 10:00 PM

An important opportunity to educate the public was missed in the article "Cool in a Crisis" about Makayla Gorden and her unfortunate vehicle accident where the family's dog was injured and had to be euthanized. Makayla wants to be a veterinarian and tried to comfort the dog after the accident and during the ride to the vet clinic.

Unsecured pets in vehicles become high velocity projectiles during a crash that most often result in the pet's death. A lady driving on my road recently hit a tree head on. She had minor injuries but her two dogs were both killed. This could have been prevented if the pets were in secured carriers or attached to specially designed "seat belts" attached to a dogs' collars. I can guarantee that the cost of these safety devices is far less than the cost at the vets.

I hope Makayla makes it her mission in life to inform the public about the safety of pets in vehicles. Why would you not want your pet as safe as yourself or your child? Unsecured dogs in cars are often a distraction that causes an accident. Don't let your pet sit on your lap or run loose in the vehicle while you are driving.

I hope everyone thinks about the loss this family suffered the next time you take your pooch in the car. I wish Makayla much success in her desire to become a veterinarian.
