DOG: Press editorial misfired

| July 16, 2014 9:00 PM

The Press editorial missed the point of the outrage about the police shooting a dog in his owner’s car vs. another violent human strangling a woman and her daughter.

1. Both are horrible events, but as a community we believe that the justice system is in a position to lawfully deal with the taker of human life. However, we have NONE of those assurances about our beloved pets, and a police officer shot the dog, not some disgruntled equally violent person.

2. Whatever happened to “protect and serve” instead of “shoot at first opportunity,” which seems to be the ongoing example of too many of those who wear the police shield for all the wrong reasons.

I have a very long list of questions about why it was necessary to shoot through the window at a dog inside a car, no matter how “protective” the dog may have appeared about anyone intruding into that vehicle. How many times have any of you ever gotten out of your car in a parking lot and the car next to you erupts with barking dogs at the window? Some of them shake the car, and some of them just hysterically bounce up and down, but don’t weigh enough to shake up anything but themselves. Next time can I just take out my gun and shoot them with impunity, or just say “Sorry, Would you like the remains frozen or cremated?” That’s the point you missed in the editorial.
