ADVERTISING: Advertorial — Health detective work

A health detective is a professional, such as an acupuncturist, functional medicine practitioner, naturopath, nutritionist, or other practitioner that looks deeper into the root causes of health and disease, rather than treating just the symptoms. Treating just the symptoms is akin to putting a Band-Aid over the warning indicator light in your car. When something is wrong with your body and the body has run out of resources to deal with it effectively, it sends up a red flag, a warning indicator, to tell you something is wrong — we call it a symptom. We can treat the flag/cover the light, but the problem is still there.

OPINION: Survey results on doctors leaving the state due to abortion laws

Not six months after Roe v. Wade was overruled, and only a few weeks after Idaho’s abortion laws became effective, I was scheduled to teach a course entitled Reproductive Rights in the U.S. I have taught constitutional law for many years, but I was nervous about teaching this particular course, covering a controversial topic at a momentous time.

Which fats are good?

In this day and age, the mention of fat causes people to squirm. So many people have become so scared of fat, that despite the rotund gut they display, their diets are severely lacking in the fats necessary for good health. We've been sold this bill of goods that eating fat makes us fat, and despite nearly starving ourselves of fat, the rising rate of obesity should have been a clue decades ago that this theory was largely wrong.

SENIORS: Projects show their passion

On Wednesday evening, I joined two LCHS teachers and evaluated six students presenting their senior projects. The projects were as diverse as the students presenting them -- a hobby, a passion, a future career, a path of study. The interesting thing to me is that from none of these students did I get the impression that this was just another task to complete before the diploma was handed to them. These students truly cared about the topic and expressed passion for the time and energy spent to complete the project, paper and presentation. For me, it was informative and enlightening.

I’m not talking about the latest gossip, but the buzz many people experience in their ears. Sometimes it’s a hum, or a roar, or can even sound like crickets.
