ANTHEM: Let freedom ring

Loving our country and honoring our flag just go together — kinda like “you can’t have one without the other.”

PROGS, LIBS AND DEMS: They care

They care about the planet, our shared home, the Earth. They understand that our species has wildly overpopulated itself and our freedoms are unsustainably consuming our natural resources. They care enough to make every effort to lower the number of what they have called “useless mouths,” restricting liberty in the process.

COUNTY PARK and REC PLAN: An urgent need

I am writing to express my concern about the lack of a comprehensive park and recreation master plan in Kootenai County, a critical issue highlighted by the recent rejection of the open space bond proposal on Nov. 7. While I voted against the bond proposal due to the absence of a publicly supported plan, I commend our Board of County Commissioners for putting the matter to a vote.

ILLEGAL IMMIGRATION: A national crisis

Our Panhandle, a rather unique shape, is a beautiful part of this world. One of the primary reasons is our people who call this land home. My experience living here since 2001 is that folks are glad to be right here. People here are chill. They like/want to be here. As we grow, we welcome those who want to embrace who we are and what we have to offer. Take time to listen and assimilate.

ELECTION: Support this superior slate

As a lifelong resident and someone who has been deeply ingrained in our community for over three decades, I’ve had the privilege of working alongside exceptional individuals who have dedicated themselves to bettering our community. These are the individuals who have tirelessly served in various capacities, contributing to our nonprofits, Chambers of Commerce, and economic and workforce development organizations. Their commitment and passion for our community’s welfare are unparalleled, making them the ideal candidates for Precinct Committeeman.

NEWS: Garbage in, garbage out

As a lifelong resident of Coeur d’Alene, I think I speak for many when I say, I wish I could flip back the calendar a decade or two. A time when people held doors for each other, visited in line at the DMV and made their kids mow the lawn. We held our politics closer to our heart and managed family dinners where we had differences of opinion. I could go on and on.

Farm allergies: Have your spine checked

We've all seen the hay being cut in the fields and the hazy days that signal copious amounts of pollen in the air. To most of us, this signals that summer is in full swing.

VOTE: First learn about candidates

When I opened The Press on Wednesday morning to see who were the primary winners, I was disappointed to see only 22.3% of the voters voted. THIS IS SCARY! The 22.3% of voters controlled the outcome of our primary election.

Get more involved in government

The editorial in Sunday's Cd'A Press (June 2, 2013) presents an excellent summary of what the community needs in our next mayor. This will be a key election and a significant event in the history of our wonderful city. There is so much on the table, so much that needs to be done to ensure the well-being of our community in the coming years. We need to spend the five months leading to the November election getting informed about the issues and the candidates.

We can't print our way out of debt

While listening to the experts in our nation's Capitol toss around phrases like "cutting spending, raising taxes, debt ceiling, holding the line, and stimulating the economy, etc." reminded me of a comedian convention. While these words and phrases are legitimate terminology, the perspectives by the President, some members of Congress, media editorialists giving their opinions makes one wonder whatever happened to common sense?
