VOTE: First learn about candidates

| May 30, 2010 10:00 PM

When I opened The Press on Wednesday morning to see who were the primary winners, I was disappointed to see only 22.3% of the voters voted. THIS IS SCARY! The 22.3% of voters controlled the outcome of our primary election.

Did you know that the primary election determines what candidates continue to go on the November election ballot? The other candidates are eliminated. We lost several good candidates in our primary.

After reading The Press, I felt a need to not criticize our non-voters, but to encourage them … they are important and we need them. We are in a country that allows us the privilege to vote. You have the privilege to vote for candidates who will represent what you believe in, or what you don’t believe in.

Candidates that will fight for our amendments and candidates that will fight to have some of them either changed or removed. One of them is the 2nd Amendment, the right to bear arms, which is important for many Idaho hunters. Often we take our rights for granted, not realizing there are candidates running for office, just waiting to be voted in … to take them away.

Some candidates believe in keeping traditional marriages one man and one woman in Idaho, and some candidates are waiting to change it. Some support pro-life and some support pro-choice. We have candidates who are fighting to keep God in our country, in our “Pledge of Allegiance,” on our American money … and we have candidates who are trying to have God removed. Do we need to go on?

We have many voters in Idaho that can make a difference. WE NEED YOU, IDAHO NEEDS YOU, OUR COUNTRY NEEDS YOU, AND THE FUTURE GENERATIONS NEED YOU! I know many voters are frustrated with the way our country is heading, but it is up to us as voters to turn it around.

Words of caution: Educate yourself about all the different candidates running for office and vote for the candidate who will represent what you as a voter believe in and what you believe is right. Don’t vote for a candidate that you are not knowledgeable about; that might be the one who takes some of your most precious amendments or rights away.

Thank you and hope to see 100 percent of our voters at the November election. God bless America.
