ANTHEM: Let freedom ring

Loving our country and honoring our flag just go together — kinda like “you can’t have one without the other.”

Years ago, my older brother Bob and my cousin Jim enlisted in the Army after World War II began. My brother returned home — two purple hearts and a silver star! He married, raised a wonderful family and became a pillar in his hometown. He lived and loved the American dream.

My cousin was killed shortly after arriving on a far-off battlefield. He didn’t return home, marry his high school sweetheart, raise a family or live his dreams. Jim and countless millions over the years have given their limbs and lives so the rest of us could have the opportunity to live in the greatest nation on the planet and live OUR dreams.

When our National Anthem is played, our American flag is raised, “most” of us stand at attention, our hands over our hearts, thanking God for the honor and privilege to do so. In a recent column, Steve Cameron defended an NFL quarterback he felt was being unfairly treated because of his stand on “racial Injustice.” To me, racial injustice IS real, but this is NOT about racial injustice — it’s about love of flag, love of country and a special love for those who gave their lives so that Mr. Cameron can write his columns, I can write this letter and yes — even the right to kneel and reject our flag and country if they choose to do so.
