NIC: President's game plan

The treatment North Idaho College athletics has received from our conference leadership for league violations is unquestionably excessive. Anyone interested in following the process, from the initial notice of the investigation to our appeal and the issuance of sanctions, may do so — all relevant source documents are on our website for public view (www.nic.edu/nwacresults). You will find in our appeal, that NIC vigorously fought the incredibly disproportionate penalties for the violations committed. We logically and systematically made the case that our students should not become victims of rule violations in which they had no part.

Op-Ed: Would you go to war to save my children and yours?

If an armed and dangerous enemy of our great state and nation were found to be amassing at our borders, determined to harm our most vulnerable, would you join the fight to protect your neighbor?

With sincere thanks

Local wine consumers and our friends and customers will be reading this on New Year’s Day. It is hard for Mary and I to believe that we are closing the books on our 12th year in business here in Coeur d’Alene. We just passed the anniversary on Dec. 17. Since that date in 2007, we have hosted many winemaker dinners, wine tastings, wine club release parties and other events here at our shop and with our wonderful restaurant partner for our winemaker dinners at Fleur de Sel in Post Falls.

CLIMATE: Step up, America

Two of the values that we share are personal responsibility and investing in our children. We are accountable for our actions. We build better lives for our children. We don’t ask others to do our work for us, or take from our children’s future for an easier life today. Such actions are contrary to our values. Idaho does the right thing, regardless of how hard it is. We find a way.

CDA SCHOOL LEVY: Teachers asking for support

Like many of you in our community, the failure of the school district levy has my heart heavy. Being a teacher in our district, a wife of a teacher/coach in our district, and having two kids in our district, it has been a lot to process. This vote has not only affected my personal life, but that of my school family.

OPINION: A letter of thanks

As another school year winds down, we reflect on the tremendous growth and progress our students, teachers, and staff have achieved. It’s always a bittersweet time as we say goodbye to our students for the summer. Many will go off adventuring at the many camps offered around our region, spend time with family, experience first-time summer jobs, and for our seniors, the beginning of the next chapter of their young adult lives. We are proud of our students and staff and are grateful for their hard work. It won’t be long until we welcome a new group of learners to the district along with our returning students, and we look forward to that!

Op-Ed: The fall of coronavirus in Idaho: Once more unto the breach!

The valiant struggle of today’s healthcare workers against the coronavirus hearkens back to one of the toughest enemies George Washington faced while fighting for American independence: Variola, the smallpox virus.

TERRORISM: It's in our back yard

Our country spends billions and billions of dollars on fighting terrorism in other countries. This tactic of bringing the fight to them and in turn keeping them preoccupied and focused on attacking and fighting our soldiers rather than focusing on attacking civilians is an ingenious tactic. My point of this message is not to focus on the wars overseas, but rather ask a question that has been stirring inside of me for quite some time...

SHUTDOWN: Let's take U.S. back

Our federal government was trying to make the federal problems our own personal problems re: Closing federal parks, our heritage and our recreation, etc. Some of the states stepped up to the plate and paid to keep these inherited rights open to us, the taxpaying public. Maybe now is the time for all the states to take full responsibility.

GAY: Criticism isn't bigotry

As a Christian, I find myself somewhat disturbed by the rising effort to legalize gay marriage. I understand there are those who feel that not allowing gays to marry is discrimination and that a change in the law is needed to address an injustice. I, too, believe that discrimination when based on one’s beliefs or lifestyle is wrong. But is changing our laws to sanction a minority’s lifestyle a good idea? Our founding fathers recognized that laws are needed in order to advance and protect our society. Laws that were passed were based on the three fundamentals that are the foundation of our society: Faith, family and community.

LAKELAND: Schools bolster community

Lakeland area schools are known throughout the state as being among the finest in Idaho. Virtually every year, teachers and administrators are recognized as being the best in the state. Our students continue to excel with the foundation we provide for them. Many of us chose to move to the Rathdrum area and continue to reside here because of the outstanding school system and the community that supports the level of excellence we demand. Our schools are the backbone of our community.

MY TURN: The hidden cost of state and federal administration on our public schools

I hope that I speak for a large percentage of our local citizens, when I say that our community supports excellent educational opportunities for our children, safe and secure school buildings and competitive pay and benefits for our teachers.

KHS: Get behind organization

With the recent terrible incidences of animal abuse in our community, it is more important than ever to support our local Humane Society. It is comforting to hear that under the leadership of Andy Smith and his board and staff that our Kootenai Humane Society is truly an advocate for our four-legged friends.

LEVY: Statistics reflect quality

Is America in trouble? It seems that troubling issues cross our paths with increased frequency from health care to taxes to national debt. As both taxpayers and parents, we have an opportunity to sustain and build this great nation right here in our own community. The answer rests with our children — our hope for a bright future.
